The Best Way It’s interesting that the most skillful way, the most stress-free way, the most straightforward way, the most peaceful way seems to be the best way—not the struggling way, not the “put down” way, not the tense way, not the forceful way, not the “look at me” way, not the manipulating way, not the tricky way, or even the self sacrifice way. God’s way...the way of Love, Joy, Peace .... Thank you, Father, for your way of peace.

Here’s something I sometimes think about...surprise!...I sometimes think. Have you noticed that most good things happen on purpose? I mean, they usually occur as the result of deliberate, thoughtful action rather than by accident. Most of the time accidents are harmful, but not so with deliberate action. Mistakes happen by accident. Of course, a person can deliberately do harm, but true Christians choose to follow Jesus Christ. Hmmmmmm, what will I do on purpose today?

What or who is most important to me? Could it be a car? Maybe a vintage 1957 shiny V8, stick shift Chevy in immaculate condition? Maybe a son, daughter, parent or spouse? Is it God? Isn’t it kind of hard to be honest about this? Do I love something or someone more than I love God? Do I have an idol? I sure hope not but ……

Aren’t you glad that God gives us space?...that He does not keep us on a tight leash?...that He allows us to make decisions?...that He does not force us to seek Him?...that He wants us to love Him with our whole heart, not because He forces us to love Him, but by our own will? My wife and I recently had our granchildren for the weekend. WOW!!! Granchildren are wonderful but ...ooooh!...they have sooooo much energy. Aren't we glad that God has more energy than we aging grandparents have! Oh, to have even a little part of God's energy. Colossians 1:28-29 (New International Version) We proclaim him, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone perfect in Christ. To this end I labor, struggling with all his energy, which so powerfully works in me.

Hmmm, reflecting on something... This may be a little offbeat but I'll write it down here anyway just for the fun of it. Do you feel tired and wasted at the end of the day? Worse yet, do you feel tired at the beginning of the day? ………. (Sounds like the beginning of a commercial sound-bite, doesn’t it?) ……. Well, you don’t need to feel discouraged. What you need is ………. Well, maybe we can forget the hyperbolic commercial statements and go straight to the source—the ultimate Authority. The Great I AM says,Titus 3:4-6 (New International Version) 4But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, 5he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, 6whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, 2 Corinthians 4:16 Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.

In earlier posts, I’ve told about the major reformation of our denomination. Now, we have changed our name from the Worldwide Church of God to Grace Communion International. The name change has been in the works for quite some time to consider all the ramifications—legal as well as opinions. Although we have congregations throughout the United States, Canada and the rest of the world, we still are quite small after what seemed to be a mass exodus due to our reformation of the mid 1990s from a works based church to a Grace based church. Thanks to those of you who have been praying. Leaders of some major denominations have been praying for us and supportive. We are grateful.

Let’s Criticize Why not make a conscience decision to spend all day criticizing? Criticize our spouse (oh, you do that anyway?). Criticize articles in the newspaper. Criticize politicians, traffic lights, grocery products (too high, decreased volume, low quality, diluted), crazy drivers on the freeways, theologians, the weather, the landscape, the neighbor’s yard, somebody’s clothes, someone’s shoes, an editorial, a sermon, our Pastor, the Church, our brothers and sisters in Christ, ... where does it stop? Well, after all, criticizing all these things would show how much better I am than they are. Right? No? Criticisms, especially when they are witty, show how smart I am. Right? No? Aren’t I happiest when I’m criticizing? When I’m negative? When I’m sarcastic? When I’m mean? Blessing Isn’t it great to receive blessings? Of course, you know that blessings come in many forms but they all have in common the fact that they all are good. Now here’s an idea. Why not be a blessing? Wouldn’t it be wonderful if you (if I) could be a blessing where ever we go to whomever we meet? Worth a try. May we all have enough of God’s goodness to be such a blessing. Hush! Be quiet! “Simmer down!” Sounds like something my Dad would have said. Doesn’t God say the same thing? What do we do when we are upset about something? Mouth off? Complain? Criticize? Accuse? Feel sorry for ourselves? Get ourselves more and more worked up? Get other people upset? Such is what ancient Israel did repeatedly. It seems that we, too, are human and do the same. God tells us to be quiet and watch him at work. Exodus 14:14 "The LORD will fight for you; you need only to be still." Psalm 46:10 "Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth." Psalm 37:7 Be still before the LORD and wait patiently for him; do not fret when men succeed in their ways, when they carry out their wicked schemes. Philippians 4:6-8 (New International Version) 6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Okay, okay. Maybe I should do what Dad says. After all, Father knows best.

Rejected? Downtrodden? Treated with no respect? Do some of Rodney Dangerfield’s “No Respect” jokes really apply to you? I try to remember: The same was true of a shepherd boy, David, of whom God said, “A man after my own heart”. The same was true of Jesus. Aren’t we glad that people are not our final judge? Aren’t we glad that God, who is the real judge, looks on the heart?..Not the outward appearance? 1 Samuel 16:7 But the LORD said to Samuel, "Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. This scripture comes to mind occasionally. I don't know why ... Maybe because people—sometimes complete strangers—seem to have the inclination to tell me their problems. We Christians are not immune to setbacks are we? We sometimes are ambushed from every conceivable angle. Problems come and sometimes pile up on us. However, they do not have to get us down. That is why I like this passage of God’s Word. Maybe this scripture comes to mind because I need the reminder. 2 Corinthians 4:7 But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us. :8 We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; :9 persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.

Caregivers 1 Peter 5:7 Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. Nowadays, more and more people—especially baby boomers and older—have found themselves in the position of being caregivers of their parents. I am one of them. For the most part, this sort of care giving is not a paying career that we have chosen. It is not a job for which we have gone to school, had an internship, and graduated. Most of us have not received a diploma with special, certified credentials that show that we are qualified to be caregivers. What seems to have happened with most of us is that we started helping our parents as they became progressively less able to care for themselves until we found ourselves doing just about everything for them. Some of us have even quit our careers to insure that our parents receive the attention that they need and/or want. However, most of us lack the appropriate skills and knowledge. On the other hand, we can find resources online and maybe find someone to replace us while we go to a Caregivers seminar now and again. After all, our parents deserve it, do they not? They fed us when we were children, nursed our skinned knees, gave us shelter and all that we really needed, right? On the other hand, some of our parents were not so nice. Some of our parents abused their children who now, as adults, care for them. The red whelps on the back of the legs and the bruises have now healed. The whippings by the wire handle of a flyswatter, the punches, and wrathful threats (and worse) are in the past and are but painful memories of wrathful parents…but memories they are…sometimes-vivid memories. Yet, some of the same, abused, adult children seem to have no choice but to care for their abusive parents who now are feeble shells of what they once were. Weak, sick, feeble bodies temper the fierce rage that still are in some of those parents who now occasionally lash out at their caregiver children. Such caregiver children surely need God’s love to shine in them and through them to their parents. All adult/children caregivers, I believe, need God’s love. They, I believe, need our prayers. Perhaps we agree that all caregivers, professional and otherwise, need a special kind of help to do their job with tenderness and sensitive compassion. 1 John 4:8 Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. Oh, it seems to be so easy for me to focus all too much on my problems. But when I do so, I act as though the world revolved around me. When I do so, I pray as though the world revolved around me. Problems seem to have a way of narrowing our thoughts. They demand so much of our attention that it’s hard to think of anything else. A family joined our church several decades ago and asked for prayer. One of the children of that family had a severe, incurable ailment. After several years, God healed the child and guess what happened after the healing. The family left the church. Sometimes, our relationship with God revolves around a problem. Without the problem, the relationship ends. Wouldn’t it be much better if our relationship with God revolved around love? What do you think? 1 John 4:8 Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.

The Prayer and Praise Forum on the same network as this Blog Towne is a place where people post prayer requests and prayers. Maybe some of you have been there. Quite a few prayer partners respond to those prayer requests over time. Sometimes it takes a while for us to respond to any given prayer request because each of us has a life outside of the Forum and none of us pray for a living … even though we might sometimes feel almost as though praying is our life. After all, it comes to the point of praying being “like breathing” as one prayer partner said. Well, sometimes, one of us prayer partners posts a personal prayer request and something wonderful happens. Our brothers and sisters in Christ come charging to the rescue. It’s as if the rescue squad comes, praying, comforting and encouraging while asking God to do the real rescue. It’s like in the movie, The Guardian. Only it’s God to the rescue and He says, “I’ve got you and I will not let go!!!”

Well, I am musing a little bit here about suffering. Seems it does not always have to end in tragedy. We all suffer in one way or another but most of us probably do not suffer for living the teachings of Jesus Christ. Many of our sufferings are from our own doing. One time when my doctor asked me how I felt, I said, “Better than I have a right to feel”. He laughed and said that the same is true with most of us except we usually don’t admit it. Many of our sufferings are from unwise choices and, of course, from our inherited proclivities, our environments, and our DNA. Then there are the actions, poor choices and mistakes of others that affect us. Now in my case, suffering is never my fault. I find it quite easy to find something or someone to blame for my sufferings. That’s because I’m perfect. I used to be self-righteous but now I’m perfect . Anyway, I think we all can agree that suffering is not a phenomenon. We all suffer…right? May all of our sufferings result in the life of Jesus. 2 Corinthians 4:7 But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us. 8 We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; 9 persecuted, but not abandoned;struck down, but not destroyed. 10 We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body

2 Timothy 1:7 For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline. Bulletproof Mind This term, The Bulletproof Mind, has been used in the context of training for military Special Forces. The training is to prepare soldiers’ minds for horrendous experiences, including friends being blown apart, children being mutilated, not only by the enemy but also by friendly fire. This training is to help prevent PTSD. The goal is create a strong minded, sound minded, stable minded soldier who can think clearly under fire and afterward. I’m reminded of the suffering Christian. When we are sick or injured, it is all too easy for us to make the situation worse than it is by exaggerating our suffering. Not to minimize the fact that the suffering is real, but we could wind up having our own little, private pity party before we know it, putting ourselves through more anguish than is necessary. The more we focus on our pain, the more we suffer. For most of you reading this, no more needs to be said. A reminder is enough to keep us going, to help us to go forward, unswerving, unflinching, and indomitable because of the bulletproof mind of Jesus Christ living inside of us. I salute the many of you walking-wounded Christians who continue to be active in service to others. 2Cor.4:8 "We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken, struck down, but not destroyed." The following words, statements, and concepts do something to me. Cool it? For the most part, anger is our enemy. Have you noticed that we often get angry when we don’t understand something? It may be a misunderstood doctrine, it may be what we consider a stupid action, or it may be a decision someone makes that seems to be “off the wall”. …or maybe someone just punched us in the nose. Maybe you remember a time when anger made you do something that caused you problems that seemed never to end. Yep, anger often makes us act without thinking and we then make mistakes. So, how do we keep ourselves from losing our cool? God makes some comments on this subject. Here are a few of His comments. How can we use His comments to avoid losing control? Ephesians 4:26 In your anger do not sin: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, Psalm 119:165 Great peace have they who love your law , and nothing can make them stumble. (Romans 13:10 NIV Love does no harm to its neighbor. Therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.) Psalm 131:1 My heart is not proud, O LORD, my eyes are not haughty; I do not concern myself with great matters or things too wonderful for me. James 1:19 My dear brothers, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry.

Some concepts are so important they are worth repeating to ourselves.....again and again. The following is one of my previous Blog entries that I recently was reviewing. I need to remember this. Radical Interpretation? James 5:15-16 (NRSV) 15 The prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise them up; and anyone who has committed sins will be forgiven. 16 Therefore confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, so that you may be healed. The prayer of the righteous is powerful and effective. Wait a minute. Along with the main drift here, is this passage saying that if I pray for others, I will be healed? Does this slant fit with the way of love? Does it fit with God’s higher way of thinking (Isaiah 55:9)? Is God love (1 John 4:8)? Actually, I have noticed that my life goes better when I’m primarily thinking of the welfare of at least one other person besides myself. Hmmmm ….. wait a minute …. Let me think …. Yes, Love your neighbor as yourself. It fits. Or am I way out on a limb? Is this a radical interpretation? I don’t thinks so. Of course, this does not say to love your neighbor more than yourself. Here’s something that I’ve noticed. When I’m praying for others on the Prayer and Praise Forum, my day goes better than when I don’t pray for others. Maybe I should get out of my own little world and pray more for others.

If It’s Good, It’s From God. Have you noticed that sometimes God uses a person to help someone else in such a spontaneous fashion that this instrument in God’s hands doesn’t even know that they are being used? Had the person thought about whether or not they should jump to the rescue, they may have decided it was too dangerous or not worth the risk. But the hero did not take time to think about it…just knew that it was the thing to do. If asked, the hero would say something like, “I merely did what anybody would have done in those circumstances”. Just in case any of us has a doubt about our own actions or the actions of a hero, maybe we can look at the result of the action. Is it good? Getting to Know You What makes a good relationship? I suspect that maybe good communication has something to do with it. To me, it seems that the best communication is non-verbal. Here are some abbreviated reflections on non-verbal communication. Know the other’s thoughts because of context. Read body language, facial expressions and eyes. Basketball teams, practice different plays, modified plays on the spot to fit the situation. Good Dance bands. Travel to different gigs together, practically live together on the road, and play together. Learn how each one thinks. Choirs and choruses. Orchestras. Couples married for 50, 60 or more years. How does this happen?—people learning to know what the other is thinking? How do we develop good relationships? Good teamwork? Great communication? Maybe by spending time together, learning one another’s strengths, weaknesses, gifts, proclivities and, above all, having the same mind, the mind of Jesus Christ. Thankfully, God knows our thoughts. We can know His thoughts, in part, because of His Word. But how awesome it will it be when we know His thoughts in full! Store Clerk There is an employee at our local Wal-Mart who quietly hums and sings while she works. I don’t know her personally. For that matter, I don’t even know her name but I suspect that she’s a real delight to customers and to her coworkers. One time when my wife & I were shopping together, she (my wife) mentioned to this lady how beautiful her singing was. I, too, on a different grocery shopping trip told her that I enjoyed her singing. When I checked out this morning with some groceries, she even sang in place of talking as she rang up my order. Is this yours, too? I bagged those for you. In response to my telling her what a delight it is to hear her singing, she said it helps us to get past the morning sleepy grumpiness, makes the day go better. After we wished each other a good day and I made my way out of the store, somehow, I felt lighter. The day was less of an effort. Could it be that God lives in this store clerk spreading a portion of His love, joy and peace? Could God do the same through me? Hmmmm (thinking). It's time for me to pick one of my mother's prescriptions at the pharmacy. What if I quietly hummed while the clerk rings up the price? Galatians 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace...

On a personal note, some of you have been praying for my mother who is 95, has diabetes, has aches and pains that come & go, is weak, is tired, does not sleep well at night and, recently, has been sleeping during most of the days without taking her medicines and without eating unless I awaken her. Even then, I usually have to convince her to eat and to take the medicines that I give her. Besides, she is not a happy camper when I wake her up and is not very communicative. Being diabetic, she needs to eat regularly to keep her blood sugar stable. Recently though, she often has been rejecting the food I give her (okay...I admit that I’m not much of a cook and she’s tired of frozen meals and frozen pot pies). Well, she seems to be better this morning. Actually, I thought she was better yesterday morning, but she went downhill over the course of the day. But today, I hope, will be different. She even joked a little with me this morning. Recently, I’ve been making a high protein smoothie for her from time to time—especially when she doesn’t feel like eating anything. As I mentioned, being diabetic, she is supposed to eat regularly to keep her blood sugar stable, so I recently have been giving her a high protein smoothie when she refuses to eat. This morning, however, not being able to sleep, she got out of bed at about 4 am, cooked and ate a couple of eggs with coffee, then went back to bed. At about 7:45 am, when I checked on her, she looked at me out of the corner of her eye with a slight smile and said, “Where’s my smoothie?!!” A cheerful heart is good medicine… Proverbs 17:22 Go ahead, make my day.
