Philippians 4:12 I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. Hebrews 11:1-2 Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. This is what the ancients were commended for. I didn't realize I had not updated since we picked Nick up at his boot camp graduation! Well Nick's group got the highest award given. Honor Flight. Nick also was awarded two other certificates and a ribbon. The honors include recognition for: Exemplary Motivation; Physical Fitness; Strong Military Bearing; Excellence in Drill and Ceremony; Adherence to the Civil Air Patrol Core Values and Continual Spirit. We are SO proud of him!! Nick is the boy in the middle, marching next to the girl. My boy is gone again! Nick left Friday evening for 11 days with our daughter and her husband plus a total of four kids. Gosh I miss him! I'll be glad when summer is over. This is his 5th outing this summer! So, Nick was flying Delta and Jim thought since they had their own terminal that it meant no underground, fast moving train. Wrong!! They only allowed one of us to go with him as an unaccompanied minor and I was already missing him, so I went. We did just fine! Found the train and got off at the right spot. Went up the escalator and finally found his gate. We were about 1 1/2 hours early. First the plane was delayed for computer problems. Then another hour delay because of bad weather in New York. Nick would have gladly cancelled it all and just come home, but I didn't pay for the tickets so Well, we're chatting and watching people come and go when we hear "Cadet?" A young female officer from his boot camp was sitting to my right and she recognized him from camp. She and Nick talked for the hour until boarding time and then he hugged me and left. Captain was heading up to White Plains, New York, on the same plane, to her wedding! She said so many nice things about Nick! He's only been gone two days and I'm so ready for him to come home. He's such a joy and such a great kid! Our grandson, Jackson, who is 7 will be flying in on Tuesday. I'm sure he'll help the time go faster. I hope he isn't bored to death until Nick returns. Jack will be here two full weeks. Jim went to an audio club meeting in Atlanta today. They were going to discuss and preview some turntables and he loves turntables and vinyl records. We probably have 500 records. Some are more than 40 years old. Most of them are at least 30 years old. So, I did a couple of loads of laundry and cleaned out a cabinet. Boring! Monday I have a meeting from 6:00 to around 7:00 for A Taste of Villa Rica, which is a fund raiser for the free medical clinic. I'm head of the committee to find volunteers for each need that day. Tuesday I will work, as usual, from 1:00 to 5:00 ish at the clinic. We screen people financially that day. Wednesday night there is no Youth Group at church. Our Youth Pastor is on vacation and the floors are being waxed in the church. Thursday is clinic day and since Nick isn't here to go to Civil Air Patrol, I'll work at the clinic that night from around 5:00 until 11:00. Nick took his 2nd Leadership test this past Thursday night so will rank up to an Airman First Class. I ordered his medals today. I also ordered the next rank up because the shipping is the same if I order one tiny thing or 10 small things. He can rank up every two months. We're going to pass on some of his metals. I didn't read the description previously and bought 3 sets of everything. They came 2 to a set. Now I know! Praise God I am healed from Stage III Colon Cancer! Our God still heals today! 1 Corinthians 1:23-31 So when we preach that Christ was crucified, the Jews are offended, and the Gentiles say it's all nonsense. But to those called by God to salvation, both Jews and Gentiles, Christ is the mighty power of God and the wonderful wisdom of God. This "foolish" plan of God is far wiser than the wisest of human plans, and God's weakness is far stronger than the greatest of human strength. Remember, dear brothers and sisters, that few of you were wise in the world's eyes, or powerful, or wealthy when God called you. Instead, God deliberately chose things the world considers foolish in order to shame those who think they are wise. And he chose those who are powerless to shame those who are powerful. God chose things despised by the world, things counted as nothing at all, and used them to bring to nothing what the world considers important, so that no one can ever boast in the presence of God. God alone made it possible for you to be in Christ Jesus. For our benefit God made Christ to be wisdom itself. He is the one who made us acceptable to God. He made us pure and holy, and he gave himself to purchase our freedom. As the Scriptures say, "The person who wishes to boast should boast only of what the Lord has done." If I start posting fall pictures, do you think it will cool down? It’s been a busy few weeks! Nick went to Connecticut/ Vermont and New York City. I had to MAKE him go. If we’d had the money to replace the ticket money, I would have let him stay home. It turns out that I should have just let him back out. Jack, our 7 year old grandson, has been here two weeks and goes home tomorrow. We had food issues for a few days and he tried us a couple of times but then his Daddy gave him a talking to over the phone and all has been well since then. He’s even trying any food I offer. That’s a HUGE praise! Jack leaves tomorrow morning to fly home. He has missed his Daddy, our oldest son, SO MUCH. Yesterday we had Jon and Mary over for the day. We cooked out and had a very nice meal. They all played PS3 and then Wii games til almost bedtime. Jon and Scott look alike and Jack remarked on that fact several times. Jack and Nick have been playing ‘army’ this past week. They chase each other around the house with toy guns. It’s quite amusing! Sofas become barricades and the noise is deafening but they sure have had fun. We finally called a truce around 9:45 last night. It has been way to hot to do anything outdoors. We’d planned to go to a state park on Saturday and an afternoon ballgame on Sunday but our heat index has been 110°. I’ve been asked to help ‘found’ a group for cancer patients, both current and survivors. A friend who is going through chemo has another friend who isn’t doing well emotionally. They contacted me and I contacted a few friends who have survived cancer and we’re going to meet for lunch this Friday at O’Charley’s. Jim's sister is coming to visit. She's trying to decide on driving herself or coming with relatives. Is she comes alone, she can stay longer. I haven't seen Cathy in about 13 1/2 years! Wow! Today is the only day I have nothing planned. There was a meeting at 8:30 for A Taste of Villa Rica, but I didn’t really have to be there. I went, instead, to a restaurant to get them signed up as a food vendor. Jim went back up to the hospital to sit with our dear friends whose mother suffered brain damage after the hospital ignored pleas for help with her breathing. The girls, Jennie and Nancy, are very dear to us. For a long time, people at church thought Jennie was our daughter. It’s over an hour each way and she’s in ICU so we couldn’t both go and take Jackson. Well, keep cool and keep well! Giving Praises to Jesus! I am healed! Galatians 5: 19-26 Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another. Hello Friends! It’s been a busy few weeks! Jackson left the day after my last blog update and my sister in law arrived 4 days later. She stayed a week. Jim drove her to Birmingham last night to catch a ride back to Chicago! Things are hopping around here. Nick and I begin home school again this coming Monday. This is our 12th year. He’s entering 10th grade. Our Ladies Weekday Bible Study starts back up on September 14th. We’ll be doing ‘Revelation’ by Beth Moore. The books cost $10.00 and can be picked up in the church office when you register. The study is open to anyone who wants to attend. If you live close to First Baptist in Villa Rica and are available from 9 til 11 on Tuesdays, I hope you’ll join us! Clinic is going very well. We’re going to have 2 clinic nights on Tuesdays during August, for a total of 6 clinic nights. I’ve got all our volunteers scheduled except for one spot. I need a data entry person for Aug. 26th. I’ve got some calls out for helpers so I’m sure I’ll find someone soon. I either broke a tooth or chipped part of a filling in a tooth this week. Guess I’m going to have to call the dentist in the morning and see if I can get in to have it repaired. I don’t have lots of free time and hate having to spend half a day waiting on the dentist. Oh well! Nick and I and some other teens sold bottled water at the Farmer’s Market the last two Wednesdays. YIKES! Last Wednesday the heat index was 111°. All the proceeds go to the clinic but it is just too hot! Youth Group starts back this Wednesday. We actually did some studies all summer but we’re now back to lessons and Life Groups. My ladies Sunday School class has picked up steam. I took over for a lady who left our church. The first week only one lady attended. There were 18 on role. We added another member this week. Two have no contact information and one member thinks they’ve moved away. This week is going to be pretty hectic! The most interesting thing that is going to happen is…. Nick is going to fly! Nick is 15 and in Civil Air Patrol. This coming Saturday, he and other cadets will be given orientation flights. The cadets actually fly the plane for 1 hour each. The pilot takes off and lands the plane. Nick is so very excited and so are we! I’ll post pictures! Learn More Click Here Tuesday I’ll work at the clinic from 12:30 until close at around 10:00 p.m. Wednesday is SPUR/ Youth Group and I’m there from 5:30 until around 8 or until the last youth is picked up. I also pick up some youth who don’t have rides to church. Thursday is Civil Air Patrol. That’s 6 til 10. I also give rides to THAT. Saturday is flying day, up in Rome which is over an hour from here. We’re going to a Braves/ Dodgers game that night (Rome Braves AAA team). Sunday is S/S and church plus a S/S teacher’s meeting. Monday is a Youth Leader’s meeting… and it begins again. Psalm 91:9-11 If you make the LORD your refuge, if you make the Most High your shelter, no evil will conquer you; no plague will come near your dwelling. For he orders his angels to protect you wherever you go. James 4:7-10 Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Be afflicted, and mourn and weep! Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to heaviness. Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up. Today marks one year since my final disconnect from the chemo pump I wore home for 2 days every two weeks for six months after a day of chemo. It's been 19 months since my diagnosis. I have a blood test in late September but don't have another scan until April 2011. Wow how time has flown! To be very honest, cancer and chemo seem like a bad dream instead of a real memory. I’m so very thankful for that. God has, again, been so good to me. I do not deserve HIS goodness and favor. What did I do today? Well, Nick was supposed to fly his first ‘sortie’ out of Fulton County ‘Charlie Brown’ Airport but the remnants of the tropical storm started moving in on Friday night so the flights were postponed. Hopefully we can do that next weekend. So, how is a 15 year old boy from the little town of Villa Rica getting to fly a plane and for FREE? Nick joined Civil Air Patrol last April and we love it. What is Civil Air Patrol? Civil Air Patrol (CAP) is a Congressionally chartered, federally supported, non-profit corporation that serves as the official civilian auxiliary of the United States Air Force (USAF).] CAP is a volunteer organization with an aviation-minded membership that includes people from all backgrounds, lifestyles, and occupations. It performs three congressionally assigned key missions: emergency services which includes search and rescue (by air and ground) and disaster relief operations; aerospace education for youth and the general public; and cadet programs for teenage youth. In addition, CAP has recently been tasked with homeland security and courier service missions. CAP also performs non-auxiliary missions for various governmental and private agencies, such as local law enforcement and the American Red Cross. If your teen or grandchild is interested in Civil Air Patrol, email or call me and I’ll share more. If your teen joins because of my sharing this info, please list Nicholas Tavegia as the Cadet responsible for their interest and then let me know. Nick earns awards for sharing info about the program. (Ribbons for his dress blues) Since the flights were cancelled, I slept until 8:00! I’d gone to bed at 9:15 and watched only a little bit of TV before falling asleep! Jim and I went to Douglasville and bought a beautiful piece of furniture for my kitchen. It replaces a piece that I’d bought in a box at Kmart 11 years ago. I’ve wanted this piece since I first saw it but had not mentioned it again. After that, we went out for lunch at Sam’s House Memphis Style BBQ in Carrollton, Georgia. Sam’s House is owned by a preacher and they have blues bands on Friday and Saturday nights. Yum, Yum. They have the very best Baked Beans I’ve ever tasted! Pastor Mark brought out the lady who makes the Coleslaw. He’d told us she was 100 years old and sweatin’ in the kitchen just for us. Actually she might be MY age. I really enjoy going to Sam’s House! Pastor Mark Eubanks is the Senior Pastor at New Hope Baptist Church in Waco, Georgia. So, our temperature has dropped about 25° but it’s still quite humid. I haven’t turned off the A/C tho I have been tempted! It’s going to be hot again soon enough and it’s so pleasant inside. I’ve studied my Sunday School lesson a final time and hope I have more ladies tomorrow. I’ve changed our class name to ‘Above Rubies, A Ladies Class’ from ‘Young Ladies’. We have only a couple of young ladies in the class. The rest are 40 – 70. I also wanted to change the tone of the class to one of ‘I am of great value’ and ‘praises for all HE has done’ . This week won’t be quite as hectic as the following two. Sunday I have Sunday School and church plus a Sunday School Teacher’s Meeting on Sunday at 6:00 p.m. Monday night I have a Youth Worker’s Meeting at 6:00. Tuesday I’ll work at The Rapha Clinic from 12:30 until around 5:30. We do financial screening and prepare for Thursday’s clinic that day. Wednesday night I have Youth Group at church from around 5:30 until 8:00. I’m a Life Group Leader and I also pick up several teens who wouldn’t have a way to church. Thursday night is Civil Air Patrol. We also give rides to kids for that. We leave at 6:00 and can get home between 9:45 and 10:30, depending on what all we do. Friday is free so far! Saturday is Jim’s 63rd Birthday and we have plans that night with our local family plus Nick may get to fly that day. Then it starts again………. The last two weeks of August, we’re having clinic on Tuesday nights as well as Thursday nights. I always work the front desk on Tuesday nights. It makes for a long but rewarding day! Well, I ate too much for lunch this afternoon and have no intention of eating again but I hear Jim in the kitchen so let me go check on him. Have a very blessed weekend. " Some of us, even though we're believers, think whenever we're having problems that God's getting even with us; that God's just trying to get back at us. It’s like the guy who was driving up to a mountain lake and on the way up it starts snowing, so he gets out to put chains on his tires. While he’s doing this, another car comes along and slams into his car. And he watches in horror as his car goes over a cliff. He continues up the mountain on foot - in the snow and sleet, and he’s getting sick from the cold. Then, as he rounds a corner, he sees that his cabin has burned down. He starts hitting his head against the wall, and asks, “Why me, God." The heavens part and a voice says, “Because some people just tick me off.” Some of you may feel that is the way God feels about you. You think that whenever you've got a problem, God is ticked off. But the Bible says, “I am the God who forgives your sins, and I do this because of who I am. I will not hold your sins against you.” (Isaiah 43:25 TEV) God doesn't hold a grudge. I’m so excited about the Beth Moore Bible Study that starts on Sept. 7th. If you live nearby, please join us! I picked up my book weeks ago and had it spiral bound for $2.50 at ACRA here in Villa Rica. It makes it so easy to open the book fully to do our assignments. Next Wednesday night, our Youth Group will be watching ‘To Save a Life’. I have been inviting any kids I see to join us. I’m also going up to ‘help’ with feeding the Temple Football Team on Friday afternoon so I can invite them. If you haven’t seen this movie, rent it and watch it. My Sunday School class is going well. We’ve added a new member and then were offered a lovely room closer to the sanctuary. I moved our ‘stuff’ yesterday and need to make phone calls to my class members. Clinic is going really well but we have such a long waiting list that we just MUST get some doctors to volunteer to do Tuesdays for us. There are 22 appointments for this coming Thursday night. One doctor. Three hours. OUCH! We have a waiting list that would stretch into March! We also still need dentists! Yesterday I had to turn away a young man with a swollen face who needed to have a rotten tooth pulled. The ER can do nothing more for him and he’d gone to several dental offices and asked if they would pull it. Please pray for this need. We have enough dentists in our county that if each dentist gave one Friday a month, they could come in every six months. Certainly that is not asking too much. It’s just under 3 weeks til I see the oncologist for my six month blood work. Please remember that need in prayer. Only good reports! Nick’s flights have been delayed because of bad weather. He’s set to fly twice (or more) on Sept. 11th. Each flight will be 2 hours long with him piloting the plane for 1 hour and another Cadet flying the 2nd hour. We’re so excited! He’ll fly a plane before he drives a car. He thinks that is really cool. Again, if you have a teen ages 12 -18 or if you’re an adult who was in the military or interested in this type club, check out www.gocivilairpatrol.com and please put Nicholas Tavegia down as the Cadet who told you about the club. He gets citations for recruiting people. Plans are for Nick to go to Winter Encampment on Dec. 27th - Jan. 2nd. He can go to Florida or Kansas but we have to pay for transportation. Air fare to Florida right after Christmas is $500. and to Kansas is $232. He'll be gone for his 16th birthday and New Years Eve. Oh, did I tell you Nick ranked up to Airman First Class? Dr. Paul Chappell said: "As Christians... We have been given the ability to approach the Creator of the world and talk with Him one-on-one. We have been given forgiveness of our mistakes, grace to forget them, and mercy to cover their eternal consequences. God gives us protection when we're in danger, provision when we're in need, and His presence wherever we go. God has given us so much more than we deserve.” Ecclesiastes 3:9-14 What do people really get for all their hard work? I have thought about this in connection with the various kinds of work God has given people to do. God has made everything beautiful for its own time. He has planted eternity in the human heart, but even so, people cannot see the whole scope of God's work from beginning to end. So I concluded that there is nothing better for people than to be happy and to enjoy themselves as long as they can. And people should eat and drink and enjoy the fruits of their labor, for these are gifts from God. And I know that whatever God does is final. Nothing can be added to it or taken from it. God's purpose in this is that people should fear him. Romans 8:38-39 And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from his love. Death can't, and life can't. The angels can't, and the demons can't. Our fears for today, our worries about tomorrow, and even the powers of hell can't keep God's love away. Whether we are high above the sky or in the deepest ocean, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord. Happy Sunday Everyone! Again, I have been so very busy. Also, it’s too hot! I am SO ready for fall. Gosh do I miss the weather up north! Last Sunday we began the study, ‘Twisting the Truth’, by Andy Stanley. We have our second class tonight at 6:00. I have a Sunday School Teacher’s Meeting at the same time but since I’m helping with the discipleship class, will go there. It’s very good! We’ve had two weeks of the Beth Moore study on Revelation and it’s been awesome! I’ll be a little late to class this Tuesday because…. I have my 6 month bloodwork (CEA) on Tuesday. Please remember me in prayer for continued good health and peace (no fear or worry) during the waiting period for results. I had Stage III Colon Cancer in Jan. '09 and have been cancer free since surgery and follow up chemo. ** My oncologist had a very serious family emergency and had to reschedule me for Oct. 7th. 80% of colon cancer recurrences happen within 18 months to 2 years. I'm only 3 months away from 2 years healed. After 2 years, my chance of recurrence drops to around 5%! I believe God has fully and forever healed me but worry does sneak in for a minute or two at a time around 'test' time. Please pray for the spirit of fear to be cast out! My Sunday School class is going okay. Attendance is two or four ladies each week and that’s counting me! Today there were only two of us but we had a very good discussion on the lesson. I really enjoyed it! Nick transferred to a new Civil Air Patrol Squadron. His new squadron has about 25 active cadets and 20 adults as members. The group owns 3 trailers on an airport. Two of the adult members are active pilots who give the kids orientation rides very often. This group is ‘hosting’ an emergency services encampment in October for three days. Nick has joined the Color Guard and Drill Team. He’s very, very happy. This squadron is about 36 miles from us but it takes a long time to get there because of traffic. It takes about 45 minutes to get home. We do NOT mind! It’s soooo worth the trip! October 9th is A Taste of Villa Rica. I’m scheduling volunteers to help sell T-Shirts, sell drinks, collect tickets and be runners during the day. A teen from church is going to head up the ‘stage crew’ for me for assisting the bands booked that day. He’ll get some of his musical friends to help out. That’s a huge burden off my load. Thanks Brandon Baker!! Oct. 31st is our annual Trunk or Treat at church. I’m heading up ‘Evangelism’ and obtaining the door prizes. I sure hope our weather holds up that day. The last two years it’s been icky here! This Tuesday night we’ll have a clinic night. Dr. Birge is going to see 20 off our waiting list. We still have over 100 names on a waiting list. One of our volunteers divided those on our waiting list by medical need so we can see those who are the sickest first. Oh how we need more doctors to volunteer for Tuesday nights! We’re getting closer to a dental clinic! We have almost everything we need other than dentists to work one day a week. If every dentist in our county gave one Friday, each dentist would work one time every six months. Is that too much to ask? Hubby has a HUGE test on Monday afternoon. It’s his last advanced calculus test. Also, Jim had some bleeding that we thought was from his bladder. It turns out to be from his prostate when he catherizes himself. He has pills to take but if they don’t work, he’ll have prostate surgery. An MRI done in June showed a ‘cloudy spot’ on his pancreas. The VA failed to notify us of the finding and his urologist just mentioned it this week. Jim has to make an appointment with a primary care doctor so they can refer him to a specialist. From what I’ve found out, a cloudy spot might mean an infection which could have already cleared up. Prayers, please!! Well, I’m doing our sheets and blankets today and need to get those done before I head back to church. Hope all is going well with all my dear friends. Thank you so much for your prayers! Sept. 30, 2010 Wow, what CAN I say? "I will not die, but live, and I will proclaim what the LORD has done." Psalm 118:17 Thank YOU Lord Jesus, my Great Physician and Jehovah Rapha! I remain Cancer FREE at 21 months. That is a huge milestone for a colon cancer patient! All my blood work came back ‘perfect’ and ‘normal’! I saw my oncologist on Oct. 7th for a quick check up and won’t go back til next March for pre-CT scan blood work. I am so very thrilled with my results that I went to bed late and was awake before 3:30, ready to get busy living! So, I got up, made some tea, emptied the dishwasher and folded clothes. Not much you can DO in Villa Rica at 4:00 a.m. So, after I saw my doctor, I took something to my husband at school and then stopped to get my flu shot. I’d gotten to talking with the doctor about his newborn and forgot to ask him, so I went to Walgreens. The nurse there convinced me to get a pneumonia shot. Didn’t feel a thing until the next day and then…. And then…. Friday I felt a little bit ‘off’ and had a few aches and pains but I thought it was from sleeping funny or lifting something. Saturday was ‘A Taste of Villa Rica’ and I was the volunteer coordinator from 9 a.m. til 10 p.m. NOT! By 12:30 I was home and covered with a light blanket. I had horrible aches and pains plus fever and chills. The spot where I got the pneumonia shot STILL has a huge lump but the red spot, 3 inches by 4 inches, has faded. YIKES! I slept on and off the rest of the day and then went to bed at 8:00 and slept 13 hours. By Sunday mid morning I felt 90% better so I went to Bible Study on Sunday night. Well, my primary care nurse from our Insurance Company called for her ‘yearly’ check in and we got to talking about the flu and pneumonia shots. She said the new 3 in one flu shots are NOT ‘dead viruses’ but ‘deactivated’ viruses and people are getting mild cases of the flu from it. She also said 50% of people who get the pneumonia shot get sick. I’ve never had any problems with a flu shot before. At least it was over very quickly. A Taste of Villa Rica went really well, tho. We made approximately $10,000 for the clinic! We’ve not been given the exact dollar amount. That will be given to us on Thursday, but it is certainly a blessing! Lot of work… but a blessing! We had 10 restaurants, loads of crafters, farmers, vendors and music (almost 100% Christian entertainment) and fun. It was a gorgeous day, too. Sunday, 10/10/10, was our 40th Wedding Anniversary. Jim took me to Longhorn's and I had the Crusted Parmesan Chicken, Broccoli and steamed apples. It was so good. He also bought me some new sweaters. He bought his own present because he says we never buy him what he wants. It has knobs on it, is all I understand. I’m really enjoying our Beth Moore Bible Study. My girlfriend and I have caught a couple of minor errors but nothing ‘serious’. We meet and talk after class is over, going over what we’ve learned and what we’ve researched during the week. Nick is so very, very happy at his new Civil Air Patrol unit. We’re STILL waiting on his paperwork to be mailed from his old unit. It’s been over 5 weeks now and they claimed to have mailed it weeks ago then said ‘going to mail it’. We’d love for Nick to have his status updated soon because he’s going to a weekend encampment on Oct. 22, 23 and 24th where he can have some trainings signed off. He needs his 101 card and a SQRT. (Whatever that is). I did not realize I'd failed to blog that Nick FLEW a Cessna 182 on Oct. 2nd! He loved it! Jim got a call from the VA about his ‘cloudy spot on his pancreas. He goes for a CT scan on Oct. 24th at 8:30 a.m. I believe the spot will have resolved or be gone. He says he feels great and he certainly LOOKS great. I have to ask him to slow down when we go to the store. He is used to walking so fast around the school that he is almost running through the parking lots. My “Socks for the Homeless” has started back up for the season, but instead of mailing socks to me to pass out, grab a package at the Dollar Store and hand out a pair of clean and dry socks to any homeless person you see and tell them how Jesus washed the feet of his friends and how much they are loved. Also, my Sunday School Class is collecting clean, used coats for our Carroll County neighbors. When doing your fall cleaning, put aside those outgrown or seldom used coats and take them to a ministry near you! In today’s economy, everyone needs a little help. Well, not sure what else you’ve missed out on. I’ll start my Christmas shopping in a few weeks and got some suggestions from the grown kids about what the grandkids might want. Nick says he doesn’t really have anything he wants this year other than a couple of PS3 games coming out soon. He is an incredible kid! God healed me of Stage III Colon Cancer! O My people, hear My teaching; listen to the words of My mouth. I will open My mouth in parables, I will utter hidden things, things from old . . . what we have heard and known, what our fathers have told us. We will not hide them from their children; we will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord, His power, and the wonders He has done. Psalm 78:1-4 Gosh, it seems like I’m so busy anymore that I don’t get much time to blog. I’m still volunteering a lot of hours at the clinic but I’m trying to assign more volunteers instead. I was getting behind on cleaning, laundry and many nights we didn’t get a hot meal. We’ve spent the last two days decorating for Christmas, only the inside of the house, and still have a bit more to do upstairs plus a tree to put up downstairs. Wow, it’s so much work but it looks so very pretty when it’s done! Nick has something every weekend with Civil Air Patrol. He is so very happy and has so many great friends. They text or talk every spare minute. This coming weekend is an Emergency Services Training and a website committee meeting. Next weekend is a SAREX, search and rescue exercise. Nick is going to a winter encampment in North Carolina Dec. 27th – Dec. 31st. My mother gave him the money for an encampment for his Christmas present. He had to have everything submitted before December 1st. He’s so excited! He’ll turn 16 on December 29th so won’t be home for his birthday, but this is such a wonderful opportunity for him. My Beth Moore Bible Study ended and we’ll start a new one after the New Year. I really enjoyed this one. It was her new study on Revelation. Our oldest son lost his job after a good number of years with the same company. He was due to receive a HUGE yearly bonus a few weeks from now. Certainly not fair but trusting God! I had hoped he and his son could come for the holidays but probably not. We had a large group for Thanksgiving. I convinced Jim to let us eat much later than usual and regretted it. I ate too much heavy stuff too close to bedtime! We’ll go back to our 2:00 or 2:30 dinners for holidays. It was good, tho! ** Jim got a call from the VA about his ‘cloudy spot on his pancreas. The shadow is gone and all his blood work is 'perfect' but he has gained a good bit of weight and the doctor said his gall bladder most probably cannot handle his high fat/ junk food diet so he's heard that from someone other than ME, now! Expect Miracles and only Good Things in 2011! "I will not die, but live, and I will proclaim what the LORD has done." Psalm 118:17 Happy New Years Friends! It’s been a busy season but I also had a good bit of ‘down time’ from mid December and it extends til mid January. I did a lot of thinking and made some serious decisions. First, we’re changing churches. We’ve been unhappy in our current church for about four years. My family wanted to leave but I didn’t want to ‘give up’. I don’t believe the years were wasted. I waited until I knew for sure I was to leave. We’ve already found our new church home. There’s no doubt in my heart. The church times at the new church are better suited to me. It is a bit of a drive. Instead of 2 miles, it’s 11 miles down the highway. Secondly, since we’re leaving the church where we’ve been involved, I have a lot of time to allot to different venues. First, instead of the Tuesday Morning Bible Study, the new church offers a Thursday morning or Wednesday Evening. I’ve decided to take the Beth Moore Study on Wednesday night while Nick is in his Youth Group. Now Tuesday morning is freed up. On Tuesdays, I was going to Bible Study, straight to volunteer at the clinic and then working til 9 or 10 when there is a Tuesday clinic night. Changing that too! I’ll volunteer during the Financial Screening time but will slot other volunteers for the clinic nights. I feel it was very unfair to Nick to be left alone 12 hours on Tuesday plus it was wearing on me. We have plenty of volunteers. So now I’ll be gone from 2 – 5 with travel time. Thursday nights are still Civil Air Patrol. We’ve been going early and eating at a Chinese Restaurant near the unit. I’m a Cadet Sponsor Member so am helping with things like Recruitment and Retention, parties, outside activities, etc. Saturdays are almost always something with Civil Air Patrol. Most times I go and sit. It’s around an hour each way to the unit and makes no sense to come home, waste gas, and then rush back if they finish early. I’m attempting to get my clinic volunteers to keep track of when they’re scheduled instead of me having to contact so many every week. That’s time I can spend with my family or in Bible Study. I’m also going to cut back on extra meetings. With gas being so high…. I’ve considered going to a temp agency and picking up some hours. I don't feel God leading me that way, tho. Our health insurance went up and income went down. God has been faithful and all our needs have been met. Just before Christmas, my 14 year old fridge died. We went out late at night and found one the right size, on sale, free ice maker and able to be delivered the next morning. They hauled off the old one for us and we lost only 3 gallons of ice cream. Everything else went into the chest freezer or the stove right away. We had a very lovely Christmas. Nick got all he wanted. We also had a WHITE Christmas! We had four inches of snow. I was thrilled. I love snow and have wanted it to snow on Christmas since we moved to Georgia in 1995. Nick turned 16 on Dec. 29th. That was also my 60th birthday. We had a family party/ dinner and then took a sheet cake to Civil Air Patrol the next night and had a party for us and the Commander of his unit, who shares our birthday! We didn’t do anything on New Year’s Eve but I’ve made Black-Eyed Peas, Corn Bread, Greens and a big ham for dinner today. It’s a Southern custom supposed to bring in pennies, dollars and luck. I just love the food! Two years ago, God healed me of Stage III Colon Cancer! Jan. 2nd 2009, I was told I had Stage III colon cancer. Jan. 7th, 2009, I had surgery to remove 18” of colon and 17 lymph nodes, 5 of which had ‘a few microscopic cancer cells’. I have seen God’s glory! Praise HIS name for all He has done in my life! I am sorry for that! Well, I thought I’d catch you all up today. Since I’ve last posted, Nick flew a glider and has ‘ranked up’ to Senior Airman. He’s just one test away from being a Sergeant! Isn’t that cool? Here’s the picture of him just before take-off. Remember, he’s just turned 16 and flew a Cessna in October. Remember, he’s in Civil Air Patrol and club costs $30.00 a year. After 11 years at one church, we moved our letter to Ephesus Baptist. It’s about 10 miles from our house while the old church was only 2 miles, but it’s a very evangelical church with a much more active membership and many more programs. Nick loves the youth group. There’s over 120 High School kids on Wednesday night. I don’t know how many Middle School kids since they are not in worship the same time the older kids are. We LOVE the pastor/ preacher/ friend and Love the youth pastor! YIKES! I’ve had some struggles with fear the last few days. My blood work and yearly CT scan is coming up in March. My blood work in Oct. was ‘perfect’. A number of people who were diagnosed with colon cancer the same time as me have either relapsed and died or had cancer found on their 2 year CT scans. That has put some doubt and fear in my heart/ head. I DO believe God has forever healed me of Stage III Colon Cancer. Please pray for me to overcome in this battle and spiritual warfare and for only praise reports next month. The blood work is set for March 4th. I don’t have a date for the CT scan yet, but it will be sometime before March 25th. Please pray for me and feel free to let me know you’re praying! We’ve had snow 3 times now. Once, the snow lasted 9 days! It snowed again two nights ago and we got 2 inches of fluffy snow that all melted by yesterday afternoon. Hubby and I are going out for Valentine’s tonight instead of Monday night. We figured we’d beat the crowd. We’ve decided on Longhorn’s. We don’t eat beef at home and that gives Jim a chance to order a steak and me to get a nice Chicken dish. I’d gained 10- 12 lbs since Halloween and have been watching what I eat, eating less and only healthy things. I’ve lost 8 lbs. I have 4 more to be at the weight I was prior to the holidays. I don’t want to be thin again, just not have that little tummy roll! I only have one pair of size 10 pants and my size 8’s were too tight. A doctor who volunteers at the free clinic told me that recent studies have proven that women over 60 should be 10% overweight. He said as we age and start to face health concerns, the extra weight helps us fight off disease and heal quicker. It even helps with our immune system. I like that! I’m probably 10% above what an insurance company would say a 5’2” woman should weigh. (Excuses, Excuses) I’m doing laundry today. It’s going to be quite warm during the day the next week or so. Maybe I’ll get out for a walk! Ohhh… Want me to tell you a secret? My Christmas tree is still up in my formal living room. It’s just so pretty and I hate to take it down! Oh, I will! I’ll take it down this weekend, but I sure have enjoyed looking at it. I left the tree up in my bedroom all year last year. I changed the decorations to fit the seasons. I probably will do that again this year. It’s a full sized green and white tree and matches our bedroom. It makes for a nice night light. We’ll see….. Jim likes it up! "I will not die, but live, and I will proclaim what the LORD has done." Psalm 118:17 April Showers started early here and will continue for another 5 days. We’ve had huge storms several nights in a row. Last night the thunder and lightning were so loud that it woke everyone. We’ve had quite a bit going on lately. Icky stuff and wonderful stuff. First, let me tell you that I had my CEA and CTC on March 4th. For those who don’t know, those are two special blood tests that check for hormones put off by cancer and other cancer type tests. Both came back ‘normal and stable since surgery’. That was GREAT news. I had my annual CT scan on March 18th and got the results on March 25th. Absolutely no sign of cancer 27 months after surgery! That’s awesome news! God has healed me 100% and forever from Stage III colon cancer. I give HIM all glory and honor, praises and thanks for my healing! My oncologist said I will continue with blood work every 6 months and only have one more CT scan, in a year. As long as those remain normal, I’m DONE! I reacted to the iodine in the last CT scan so I’ll have to be pre-medicated before the next one. I had to go to all the doctor visits and scans alone this year. My sister in law died suddenly last week. She was just a year older than me. Her family found her unresponsive on her sofa and she was pronounced dead not much later. Honestly, I had been expecting it for a while. She’d had a double bypass many years ago and was at least 100 lbs overweight. She had been very ill with bronchitis and I think it just was too much. The cause of death was heart failure. I hope she didn’t suffer. Anyhow, Jim flew up for the funeral and was gone for four days. His youngest sister met him there and they got to spend a lot of time together. That was very nice. He also saw all of his cousins and really enjoyed that. So, while Jim was away, Nick and I headed out to Civil Air Patrol. My clutch on my car went out about 2 miles outside of the city limits. I was 20 feet from a ravine but able to coast onto a tiny strip of grass. A friend in Cartersville got me the phone number for a tow and our middle son had to take off work, come and get us and then go back to work the night shift. Jon and Mary loaned me their beautiful car (they also have 2 Mustangs) til my car can be picked up. OUCH, it’s just over $1100. 00 but at least it’s all fixed up! That hurts extra because my CT scan co pay was $1,124.65. I can pay that on ‘time’ tho. Oh, I should tell you that I’ve only lost a few of those pounds I put on between Halloween and New Years. My doctor told me the only thing I’m doing wrong is the extra 10 lbs. I really do need to lose that! I don’t over eat. I just don’t get enough exercise. I still eat very healthy. I’d lost 8 and then gain a few pounds back, lose a couple, gain it back. Shucks! We absolutely love our new church. We feel right at home and have made many new friends. I’ve signed up to help in Bible School. I’ve only missed a few times in all these many years. I really enjoy it! God healed me of Stage III Colon Cancer! Cancer FREE since Jan. 09! Well hello friends! It’s been a very long time since I’ve blogged. It seems like Facebook has taken the place of blogging for many people but I thought I should check in with you. We had a quiet summer. Jim had loads of school work to complete. Nick did a lot with Civil Air Patrol. I tried and tried to lose more weight but am stuck right now at 150 lbs. That’s six pounds heavier than last summer and 12 pounds more than my pre chemo weight. We did do a lot around the house this summer. We put down wood laminate flooring in 2 rooms and repainted the kitchen. We also refinished the counter tops in the kitchen and one bath. We replaced the sinks and faucets in both baths. Jim painted woodwork in several rooms and put down new molding. He painted the railing out front with a white Gripper type paint and we’ll paint it gray to match our shutters when the humidity is not so bad. Yesterday was 2 years from my final disconnect from my ‘take home’ chemo. Two years! Wow! Our God is faithful and wants good things for His children! It’s been 2 years, 7 months and 8 days since surgery for Stage III colon cancer. My scar (1 ½ inches) is starting to fade. Yesterday’s sermon was perfect. Billy talked about suffering and how sometimes we are allowed to experience things so that others can be blessed or touched through our suffering. I believe God allowed me to have colon cancer and be healed from colon cancer to give other people hope! Late yesterday afternoon, our oldest son arrived with his 8 year old son and a friend for a visit. Scott and his friend will be here a few days and then Jackson will stay with us for almost 2 full weeks. He comes every summer. Of course, summer is over in our minds since Jim is back to work and Nick is back to his home schooling. Jon and Mary came over and we ate and visited til pretty late. It was so much fun. We laughed and laughed. My ribs hurt today from laughing so much. I love our family! Nick has started 11th grade. He’s such a good kid. I’m so blessed! He’s now a Master Sergeant in Civil Air Patrol and the unit’s Flight Sergeant. What an honor! Civil Air Patrol is such an awesome opportunity for any teenager or adult who wants to work with teens. We absolutely LOVE our new church! We’d spent 11 years at the old church and worked with youth, kids Sunday School, AWANA, VBS and more. We never felt ‘at home’. Well Ephesus is exactly the opposite! I’ve gone to ladies get togethers, Tupperware type parties, we’ve been invited and attended cook-outs and picnics, baby showers and other things. More in six months than all together at the old church. I’ve made a huge number of friends of all ages. Jim’s sang several times as well as being in the choir. Nick loves it too! He’s got a couple of girls he’s interested in. He’s got some guy friends that he’ll sit with during service. The youth pastor is AWESOME. Love this church so much! Jim turns 64 this coming Sunday (Aug. 21st). One more year and we no longer have to pay taxes on our home. LOL! I don’t think this birthday is bothering Jim like some have. I have blood work and a checkup coming up on Sept. 16th. I expect only good reports. The chances of a recurrence at this point are down to about 5% or less. After 4 years, it falls to 0% but doctor won’t use the words ‘cured’ until I hit 5 years. You and I know that God has already done what He promised in scripture! Well, I just wanted to check in and let you know that I’m still praising God for my healing and doing great! Now I’d better go finish my housework! Jeremiah 17:14 Heal me, O LORD, and I will be healed; save me and I will be saved, for You are the one I praise. Hello Friends! Fall is finally coming to Georgia! It’s about time. We had an awfully hot summer with 90 days of over 90° heat. I do not like the heat! I’m involved in two very good Bible Studies through our church. On Wednesday night, I’m taking a class taught by our pastor, Billy Godwin. It’s an amazing class! Wish it lasted two hours instead of just one. The other is on Thursday morning and is a Beth Moore study with some church women. We’ve done two videos so far and it’s quite good. There are only about 20 women in the class, which is a huge difference from previous Beth Moore studies where we’d have 80. Gosh our life has gotten so busy! Jim’s waiting to student teach until the spring or next fall. He’s still teaching high school math and has taken an after school position as a math tutor for the high school kids. He really seems to like his job. I’m glad he isn’t coaching! That takes up so much time for not much money and the parents can be harsh! This coming Saturday is a free day at Zoo Atlanta for teachers and home schooling parents. I’ve gotten our free passes but now need to choose between that and a Pioneer Day much closer to home. The Pioneer Day is also on Sunday but our Revival starts that day and goes thru Wednesday night so that would be a very rushed afternoon. Decisions, decisions! My husband is going to have a biopsy of his prostate on Oct. 28th with surgery to follow after they get his results. We’re praying this relieves some of his problems. He saw a specialist again today and the medication he’s been taking has not helped. Removal of the prostate seems to be necessary. His PSA was ‘normal’ but the medication he’s been on for over a year causes false readings. The urologist said they should have multiplied it by 2 ½. That still isn’t THAT high, tho. I have Wonderful News! I had my 2 year, 8 months and 10 day post surgery for Stage III Colon Cancer check up and everything was great again! My Hindu oncologist actually said he doesn’t expect me to ever get sick again from my bout with cancer. On a previous visit, I told him I believe God has healed me and he said ‘I think you’re right’. I don’t expect him to ever leave his Hindu beliefs but I know I’ve been a witness to him. Maybe someday… So, 5 ½ months from now I’ll have blood work and then a final CT scan about two weeks later. I reacted to the contrast dye last spring so this CT scan has to be done at the hospital with some pre treatment. I think they said steroids and I know they said large doses of a Benadryl type medicine. That will be my final CT scan with blood work a couple times a year for two more years. I accept the benefits that come from being under the covenant God made with Father Abraham! I embrace all the gifts God has offered to us! Hope all is well with all of you!
