Our trash isn't supposed to be picked up before 7am ... however, on those really nice beach-type days, you could guarantee they'd be there by 6:30 so that they could have the afternoon off. Well, I finally got tired of a) not getting the trash out in time -- Scott usually takes it out at 6:55 as he leaves for work, and b) those loud trucks waking the kids with the squealing breaks and slamming doors, that I called the city and complained. This was on one of those 6:30 pick up days ... the entire neighbourhood is like me and waits until almost 7 (otherwise we have to put it out after 10pm the night before per city bylaws). I guess the supervisor called them BACK to work and sent them to clean up our street, which still in their swim trunks ... they were quite ticked off and ended up tossing the cans across the yards once they emptied them. Other neighbours called and complained, and they had to come back AGAIN and set everything proper. They were soooo peeved ... BUT they haven't tried that stunt again ... and trash is now picked up at 7:30.

that stinks

The city feels that having trash out any earlier than that detracts from the visual appeal of the area or something like that. We are to place trash at the curb anytime between 10pm the night before, and 7am the day of pick up. One of my friends (different street) got a warning from a city official because she curbed her trash at 4pm before she and her hubby left to visit family overnight.

I usually organize all of it while it is still light out, and place the bins where they can easily be grabbed, even in the dark.

It bugs me, though, that the city is this hung up on when garbage is curbed, but does nothing about the excessive barking dogs, hedges at corners which are so high you cannot see to safely turn, people parking their cars in a way that blocks driveway access, etc.

Most of my neighborhood puts garbage cans out the evening before pickup. Is there a reason not to do that where you live?

Dogs, cats, raccoons, the occasional black bear, kids with bats...

I don't put my cans out, just the bags. In the winter the empty cans blow into the neighbors yards and onto the road. Too dangerous.

Our garbage "cans" are heavy duty, mostly plastic, and provided by the city for the auto-loading garbage trucks. They are also rectangular and don't roll by themselves. So far, I haven't seen any blowing around the neighborhood. It's also difficult for an animal to get inside them.

Our neighborhood kids are a good bunch and, by law, dogs aren't supposed to roam free. They are either inside dogs or within a fence. But the occasional neighbor ignores the dog laws after 5PM when animal control is off duty.

I think we live in the same neighbourhood.

me, too...'cept we don't usually have stray puppies...unless they escape their own yard and then it's obvious cause you don't normally see a standard poodle or one of those llaso-apso things running around free.

The only real problem we have with our garbage bins is the occasional windstorm. Once I thought I had lost mine until I found it had blown halfway down the street... Fortunately, it was empty. We're only supposed to put our cans out on the day of, although most folks put them out the night before because the garbage man comes so early - and unpredictably. My only real complaint is that my dog has determined the garbage truck is straight from hell and she must scare it away.

This can be a problem depending on which shift I am working (ie - when I'm trying to sleep).

Oh, no, we have our own cans bought from Lowes or wherever. And a blowing, rolling can on a snow or ice covered road isn't a cool thing to come upon suddenly.

Dogs are supposed to be leashed or fenced but there's a big dog that runs loose around here frequently. I live right on the edge of town and what's beyond isn't subject to the same ordinances so it probably comes from there.

And the road in front of my house comes from boonies where the speed limit is 'however-fast-you-can-go' and all the farm kids in their pickups play "bat and mailbox" or "bat and trash can" when they're bored and not out cow tipping.

**Trash Collection Saga update**

I had NOT thrown the letter away, GC had used it to write a note to me on the back (telling me how cool I am ). I HAD kept the note so I was able to check it. It was addressed to "Resident" and started out "Dear Valued Customer". No acct numbers or any specific information of any kind.

But, apparently, it was actually for my business account because GC said her boss got one, too (our stores are adjacent to each other). I have all my business mail sent here to my home office so that's why it came here.

In any case, I haven't completely lost my mind. Which is SUCH a relief!

Good! Because I've already lost mine, and the thought of having to search for two minds instead of just one was quite dizzying. That is, if I could think with a missing mind ...

I'm not sure who thought it would be a good idea for school to start so early but I'd like to smack 'em in the head.

Then GC, who can find something to complain about in everything, says "yeah, but I like being done early".

I'm gonna smack her next.

Good Morning, Denizens!

Well, sometimes when you have a complainer kid (we got one too!) you have to rejoice at the slightest non-complaint! lol

We lost power last evening from 7:00 until after 8:00. It doesn't happen very often and is more often caused by humans than weather (driving into a power pole or someone cutting tree branches), but it always brings neighbors outside. It's about the only time that we have a conversation beyond something like a friendly "Good morning". I even met three neighbors I had not seen before. It was almost sad when the power was restored because we all went back inside to our air-conditioning and TVs.

Our street construction project has done that for us around here Euty - I have met more neighbors in the last 8 weeks than I have in the almost 8 years I've lived here! We have decided to have neighborhood parties once a month or so, just so we don't lose touch again.

We are already planning a "project end" party. A Pot Luck for the 4 or 5 blocks that have been worked on this summer, and we'll invite the construction crew again. I think they liked it when we did Sloppy Joes for them last Friday. Actually I think it was the Bud Lite they liked, but they ate the Sloppy Joes too .

Yeah, that really is a shame. I remember when I was a kid my parents knew everyone in the neighborhood, played cards on Sat night, picnics, that sort of thing. It just doesn't seem to happen anymore.

Same things happens here. My neighborhood does have neighborhood events but I've never really gotten involved because of my weird schedule... that and I'm a hermit when I'm home...

I met our neighbors across the street last month at our garage sale!

I think it would be nice to live in a neighborhood where I know the neighbors. It's kinda weird for me to start now at this house since DH doesn't know them, and he's lived here for 10 years. Plus we're putting the house on the market so we're moving anyway. Hopefully. Maybe with the next house we'll get that chance.

I know a few of the neighbors from waving at them as I jog by or they bike by or walk by. A few of the kids who think my doggie is the cutest thing ever. And a few others who are bound and determined to convert me to Mormonism...

I guess that those things aren't mutually exclusive.

There are some neighbors that I don't know and some that I know too well.

I know all the neighbors in my immediate vicinity and many that live in my neighborhood. They snow blow my driveway and I take them cookies. Except for that one guy I really have the best neighbors in the world.

I would like to report that school frustrates the daylights out of me.

Lioness, if I lived closer, I'd gladly snowblow your driveway for cookies. I love snowblowing!!!!! I don't think DH will let me do it this winter, though...something about being really pregnant...
