Looks like Biruk is going to give us a run for our money in a different way. He took apart my sister's keyboard this evening.

roflol. By the time my older brother was the age of my oldest (10yo), my parents already had the FBI knocking on their door saying someone had hacked into the White Houses secure internet. After my parents insisting there was no internet at our house, they gave in and looked in Richard's room. He had build a shoebox modem and hooked it to an old TRS-80 computer (anyone remember those things?). The FBI talked to him...scolded him...then made him show them how he did it. Their top notch people of the day couldn't figure for the life of them how he had gotten in. LOL.

LOL...oh the stories I could tell of that brother's toddler days!!! He was a challenge for my parents from day 1!!!!

Well, I knew what I'd be getting into when the ultrasound tech told me I'd be having a girl. Beth has really gotten into the habit of banging her head against something when she's upset and doesn't get her way. This is on top of holding her breath till she turns purple.

At least I had Nathan as a warm up kid. I know I've got to keep a cool head. But heaven help us for the next 17 years.

Well, it was my ds who was the dramatic one, the stroppy one etc. My dd was a breeze. I always said that if I'd had my dd first, I'd have had my second child a lot sooner than 4 years later. I think it's more just them, their individual personalities, who they take after etc.

Could I just ask: how do you react when she bangs her head, or when she holds her breath?

When she holds her breath, I look at her and deadpan "Well, you know you've got to breath sometime." Seriously, I just wait it out.

If she's banging her head against something hard, I physically remove her from that area. That's it.

ETA: Like I said, Nathan has helped teach me a few things, even though he never really did full-out tantrums. My SIL has 2 girls, one had terrible, out-of-control tantrums, the other was like Nathan and got over things fairly quickly. But her difficult one was first.

Sometimes I think Beth does it because she's upset and had no other way to express it. I hope to guide her into better ways of self-expression as she ages.

You could also blow gently in her face - the reflex might still be there that a smaller baby has.

Or you could tickle her!

She usually only holds her breath when she's really, really upset and stops doing it as soon as she calms down a little. The head banging is becoming more frequent. She'll point to something and if I don't pick up the right object she start to bang her head against my chest in frustration.

Today she is fever free! But she's very cranky and clingy. I thought she'd be feeling better.

Okay, help me out here, I think something is bothering Isaac and I dont know what. He is not eating well right now (and its not all the milk, I've been not letting him have a big cup before meals or with meals since he's been not eating very good). He'll just kind of look at his food and whine. And its stuff he likes. Last night the only thing that worked was letting him out of his highchair and he crawled up on the couch with me (yeah we were eating in the living room) and took bites of my food (same stuff exactly). He wants to drink alot. He keeps putting his hands in his mouth and gagging himself, so I am thinking he is either teething (but I couldnt feel any yet) or has a sore throat. And he just hasnt acted "right" Last night he was sitting playing with a toy that would play music if you pushed a button and it was singing and he started crying...like in pain crying, very distraught, then the music stopped, then he'd stop crying...but then reach over, punch the button to start the music, it'd start, then he'd cry (very pitifully and sadly-not whining), rinse and repeat until the batteries went dead.

I'd agree with your instinct, Erin.

Could be teething (with the bigger teeth, lots goes on under the gum before they show at all) or could be his throat (maybe even his ears too, as the ears and throat are linked). What's his temperature?

His temp is normal. My MIL kept taking it yesterday because he wasnt acting "right." He's not acting like he feels TOO bad, just not quiet right. Quieter than normal, whinier than normal, just different.

It could be the bigger teeth, Erin. Is he congested at all, coughing?

Well, Beth doesn't have a fever, but she does have a large rash on her torso.

Sharon, Biruk's 2.5.

I think his behavior started to go downhill after his brain kicked into high gear. Until just a few months ago, he was the sweetest, most laid back kid ever. Now he's brilliant and tantrum prone.

Nope, no congestion, no coughing (just when he gags himself). We watch for congestion VERY VERY closely, my hubby actually studies his breathing patterns on a regular basis. Part of the paranoia of having a baby who spent time on a vent.

Oh, does that mean Beth will be brilliant, too? At least that's what I'll tell myself.

I'll give her a pass since I think she's still trying to recover her sleep deficit. But it just seems like she's to young to be flat out on the floor, banging her head against the floor. Sheesh!

Erin, sounds like ear infection to me. And could also be molars moving or canines.

my first thought was ears with the reaction to sounds and fingers in mouth.

His canines are already in, along with his first molar. I tried to poke my finger back there to see if I felt anything, very cautiously-he bit me to the point I bled over the weekend when I tried to get something out of his mouth, and didnt notice anything. He hasnt been pulling at his ears any, and doesnt have a fever at all. Is there anything else I can do to check his ears without taking him in? I dont want to take him in and it just be teething and run the risk of him getting something else while sitting two hours in the waiting room. He's never had an ear infection before so I dont know how he'd react.

I thought Isabel had a cold or tummy pain when she had her one ear infection. She was crying and tensing up and really off acting. She never touched her ears but did stick her finger in her mouth.

Took her in thinking stomah problem and dr took look at ears
first. Both swollen red and infected. :(

She said they can't communicate ear pain so they tug at other things and get overall unhappy and off acting.

There is a thing from the store that can tell you if there is fluid behind the drum but it won't tell infected. And it's over $40 I think.

It's a hard spot as a mom to figure out off acting kiddos. I would probably chance a visit to dr and sit away from the rest of the people if possible.

Erin, some babies with ear infections don't show any symptoms at all.

Is there any way of making an appointment at the very start of surgery so that the wait is less and there's fewer people around?

I think it's a bit early for the 2nd molars to be grumbling, and would err on the side of it being more likely to be something ear/throat.

Anytime I get a first of the day appt, the waiting room is still full of sick people and I have to wait. It could just be a sore throat from the temps suddenly dropping and the fact we have wood heat, not really an illness. He doesnt really act SICK, just a little more subdued (at times, not all the time) than he normally is. I guess that also could be because his babysitting schedule got changed up this week to, ya think? He is normally at my moms a few days a week, but she has been tied up so he's been at my MIL for two weeks straight. He'll be home with his Daddy tomorrow and we'll see if he acts any better, if he keeps this up through the weekend I might see about an appt next week.

If it could be ears, I wouldn't wait all weekend. You could get some Similasan and see if it helps relieve some pain.

I don't like to wait through the weekend with a sick kid because then you run the risk of needing the ER instead of just an office visit.

Do you have a humidifier? Not sure how you feel about those and his preemie beginning but our cool mist helps Isabel out ALOT at night with the dryness from cooler temps.

I have a warm one I run in the main living area during day so I don't worry about a pot of water on stove :)

With his schedule being off you could easily have a sore throat with beginnings of post nasal drip and an unhappy camper that he hasn't been at his normal place the last two weeks. post nasal drip isn't always noticeable to us as adults when we look at our kiddos. Isabel got it pretty bad and it made her real upset at night when it was the worst. We resorted to a Robitussin DM generic to use for her at night only to calm her snot and cough.

I think you're right in holding off Erin for now. You know him and you know if he gets worse you have options.

Our doc actually didnt recommend a humidifier, we thought they'd be great but he said that in his opinion a cool mist doesnt do anything and the warm ones breed bacteria. So we just never got one. We do have some ear drops. I just dont know what to do, one moment he's acting fine the next he's crying...so as soon as I think he's sick he goes back to running around screeching.

Erin, it sounds like an ear infection to me. Hannah never runs a fever or pulls at her ears when she has one. She acts like your little man.

Why I love 2 year olds...

Nathan asked me today to drop him off at dad's work, so that he could help daddy, and he told me that I would stay home and take care of Beth.

Later at lunch he told me he wanted to talk to me about something (he was quite serious). He said that if I did a "bad thing", then he should be able to put me in time out. I explained that kids don't put adults into time out, but that I would try not to do bad things.

I get such a kick out this kid.
