ORIGINAL: Sideways Well, I knew what I'd be getting into when the ultrasound tech told me I'd be having a girl. Beth has really gotten into the habit of banging her head against something when she's upset and doesn't get her way. This is on top of holding her breath till she turns purple. At least I had Nathan as a warm up kid. I know I've got to keep a cool head. But heaven help us for the next 17 years. Well, it was my ds who was the dramatic one, the stroppy one etc. My dd was a breeze. I always said that if I'd had my dd first, I'd have had my second child a lot sooner than 4 years later. I think it's more just them, their individual personalities, who they take after etc. Could I just ask: how do you react when she bangs her head, or when she holds her breath?

When she holds her breath, I look at her and deadpan "Well, you know you've got to breath sometime." Seriously, I just wait it out. If she's banging her head against something hard, I physically remove her from that area. That's it. ETA: Like I said, Nathan has helped teach me a few things, even though he never really did full-out tantrums. My SIL has 2 girls, one had terrible, out-of-control tantrums, the other was like Nathan and got over things fairly quickly. But her difficult one was first. Sometimes I think Beth does it because she's upset and had no other way to express it. I hope to guide her into better ways of self-expression as she ages.

Okay, help me out here, I think something is bothering Isaac and I dont know what. He is not eating well right now (and its not all the milk, I've been not letting him have a big cup before meals or with meals since he's been not eating very good). He'll just kind of look at his food and whine. And its stuff he likes. Last night the only thing that worked was letting him out of his highchair and he crawled up on the couch with me (yeah we were eating in the living room) and took bites of my food (same stuff exactly). He wants to drink alot. He keeps putting his hands in his mouth and gagging himself, so I am thinking he is either teething (but I couldnt feel any yet) or has a sore throat. And he just hasnt acted "right" Last night he was sitting playing with a toy that would play music if you pushed a button and it was singing and he started crying...like in pain crying, very distraught, then the music stopped, then he'd stop crying...but then reach over, punch the button to start the music, it'd start, then he'd cry (very pitifully and sadly-not whining), rinse and repeat until the batteries went dead.

I'd agree with your instinct, Erin. Could be teething (with the bigger teeth, lots goes on under the gum before they show at all) or could be his throat (maybe even his ears too, as the ears and throat are linked). What's his temperature?

It could be the bigger teeth, Erin. Is he congested at all, coughing? Well, Beth doesn't have a fever, but she does have a large rash on her torso.

Erin, sounds like ear infection to me. And could also be molars moving or canines. my first thought was ears with the reaction to sounds and fingers in mouth.

I thought Isabel had a cold or tummy pain when she had her one ear infection. She was crying and tensing up and really off acting. She never touched her ears but did stick her finger in her mouth. Took her in thinking stomah problem and dr took look at ears first. Both swollen red and infected. :( She said they can't communicate ear pain so they tug at other things and get overall unhappy and off acting. There is a thing from the store that can tell you if there is fluid behind the drum but it won't tell infected. And it's over $40 I think. It's a hard spot as a mom to figure out off acting kiddos. I would probably chance a visit to dr and sit away from the rest of the people if possible.

I dont want to take him in and it just be teething and run the risk of him getting something else while sitting two hours in the waiting room. Is there any way of making an appointment at the very start of surgery so that the wait is less and there's fewer people around? I think it's a bit early for the 2nd molars to be grumbling, and would err on the side of it being more likely to be something ear/throat.

If it could be ears, I wouldn't wait all weekend. You could get some Similasan and see if it helps relieve some pain. I don't like to wait through the weekend with a sick kid because then you run the risk of needing the ER instead of just an office visit.

Do you have a humidifier? Not sure how you feel about those and his preemie beginning but our cool mist helps Isabel out ALOT at night with the dryness from cooler temps. I have a warm one I run in the main living area during day so I don't worry about a pot of water on stove :) With his schedule being off you could easily have a sore throat with beginnings of post nasal drip and an unhappy camper that he hasn't been at his normal place the last two weeks. post nasal drip isn't always noticeable to us as adults when we look at our kiddos. Isabel got it pretty bad and it made her real upset at night when it was the worst. We resorted to a Robitussin DM generic to use for her at night only to calm her snot and cough. I think you're right in holding off Erin for now. You know him and you know if he gets worse you have options.

Erin, it sounds like an ear infection to me. Hannah never runs a fever or pulls at her ears when she has one. She acts like your little man.
