I do it for me. I feel much more clean. I prefer waxing, not necessarily brazilian, but just regular. It cuts down on razor burn and bumps. Mine get horribly infected and it is nasty. If the person knows what they are doing and pulls the skin really tight, it doesn't hurt much. My best esteticians (sp?) had me pull tight as well. Just don't ever do it on your period. It is horrible. Right now I shave but I must go with the hair growth. I have considered using Nair. Does it work well? Karen

ORIGINAL: TheEgyptianPrincess I wax all off...I do it myself... it hurts majourly.. but I have been doing this for years so- so I kind of know the pain level.. so I do it on a day where I know I can handle it.. best time, just before TOM. It lasts for weeks and is much better than shaving as the end result is smooth. Hubby likes it, but I do it for me - was doing it before I even got married. What brand/ type of wax do you use?

Thanks for the advice. Not a lesson to learn the hard way. Waxing is so expensive and I am just so sensitive to razor burn and ingrown hairs. I seriously have scars from ingrown hairs, big ones. I am planning to get a family pass to the pool next year for my little fishies and I am paranoid about hair peeking out of my suit. It probably won's because I am not exactly going brazilian bikini but if I don't do something I will be preoccupied with it. Karen

I actually don't use wax per se-- I think they call it sugaring? I make my own... you dissolve some sugar in water and let it bubble over for a while till its near the colour of honey.... then I add a tiny bit of lemon juice..... and then you let it cool down... its kind of like making toffee.. but you don't take it THAT far... you take it to the point of it being held together.. but solid enough to manage... (when I use it, its the consistency of laffy taffy when you stretch it)... I usually make a whole batch and then put it in a coffee mug.. and everytime I need it.. I just pop it in the mocrowave for a few SECONDS for it to soften it up so I could grab it with a spoon.... this is the way most egyptian "wax"... but I think in the western world they call that method "sugaring"... I am not sure what "Wax" is usually made of... but I know the kind I make is all natural.... its really good stuff.. then they say when you are done waxing.. finish it off with rubbing a slice of lemon over the area you just waxed.. and since the pores are still open.. the acidity from the lemon makes the hair grow weaker and finer the next time... that part usually annoys me more than the waxing.. sometimes I skin it... but it DOES work...

ORIGINAL: m4maggie I've thought about getting a Brazilian wax done, but the pain factor is a bit scary to me.. I find if I use a brand new disposable razor and shaving gel or lotion or whatever, then the rash or razor burn isn't so horrible either. Yeah it hurts intensley.... i get my underarms done too sometimes thats pretty bad. Ah the joys of being a woman....

I get a Brazilian wax because of the cut of my costumes. I go to an aesthetician. After the hair removal, I apply a clove oil based lotion; it reduces irritation.

I use an epilator to trim the bikini area (also do the underarms and legs); was painful at first but barely hurts at all now that the hair is finer. I also keep things trimmed with scissors.

MY question about this is...when did this become a "thing"? I mean, I am 44, and when I was younger, NOBODY even heard of this, had they? Any older women like me commenting here? I mean, I have recently begun getting Brazilians (LOVE IT. Pain decreases dramatically after first time, and I am getting in practice for h-to-be who has hinted that would be a real treat! HA!) but I felt kind of stupid, like..."Has everyone else been doing this for years and I'm the only one who never did this?" LOL. First H never mentioned it. All I ever heard about anybody doing was tidying up for swimsuits, but that wasn't anything near like this. So...have I been clueless all these years, or is this relatively new? And I am NOT ABOUT to ask my 18 yr old daughter. File that under DO NOT WANT TO KNOW!

I know for years nobody I knew ever talked of this sort of thing -- funny huh! I'm 40 yrs old. I remember my ex asking me to do it for him one time, and I didn't like the grow out. Well, I'd forgotten it was time for my yearly exam and I was embarassed and horrified that my doctor was going to see this! lol I'm sure they'd seen it before but I was sure I was the only person who did it. The I began working in an office with several women my exact same age, and we talked of everything -- this included. So that is when I realized it was okay that I kept things neat and tidy! lol I have been curious about a Brazilian, but am too nervous to let someone do that, so I make do. My current husband doesn't mind either way.

I don't. At all. Is THAT abnormal? Nope. It's all culture and personal preference anyway. Bingo, 3capp! If you think about it, it's all kind of odd, anyway...my 8yo and I were just discussing today why on earth men even shave their faces! quote:
I'm grateful we're such a good match that way. Isn't that the greatest? My brother used to say "There's a lid for every pot!" As for me and H2B, he certainly isn't one to be picky, either...I thought I would try it as kind of a lark, actually....and turns out I think I like it better myself! And I while I am pretty sure he will be very pleasantly surprised, it is really my "thing" after all. We're just kinda goofy, anyway. It is all pretty odd, really, if you think about it...why mascara? Why nail polish? Just for the fun of it, I guess!

Oh, and thanks, michele-erin! I'm glad I wasn't the only one. I started thinking, "Gee, what other basic hygiene am I not doing that everyone else is horrified by?" HA! So I guess it wasn't something everybody-but-me was doing!

That's one thing that's reassuring about the women's change room at the gym. It reminds you that most women do not have models' bodies; it also shows you that there are as many approaches to body hair as there are women.

Only time I had that area trimmed was when I had my 4 children. I from the time when every delivering mom got a shave and enema as part of the admission process.

I've been shaving "down there" since I was 13 because the thought of body hair has always grossed me out. Plus, it makes me feel cleaner and fresher.

Concerning how to cut back on the razor bumps when shaving down below: If you use a loofah or some sort of an exfoliant on the area intended to be shaved, that works well. I also agree with either using a conditioner or lotion instead of shaving cream. Also, post shave apply some aloe vera gel that seems to work well for me. Though have heard others speak of using Vitamin E oil, it makes sense too. Signed, Natural with a shaved bikini line...lol.

I've tried it all ways. And I don't like the way any of it looks. I really want to go waxing but it's so expensive. Maybe one day I'll get over my vagina shame. -reba.

I've done it every way possible except waxing. I feel cleaner with it all gone, i'm glad i'm not the only one. I never really knew which way was the "right" way and none of my friends and I really talk about this stuff lol. I am afraid to get waxed though. I eeek at the thought of the pain.

No you are not the only one who had never done it until recently. I was never even asked to do it. Except just before operations - years ago, but never totally. I still do not do it. Would not, could not think of putting myself in pain down there
