Just caught the last 1/2 hour of Throw Mama From The Train. I forgot how funny that movie was and so many really funny lines. Very well written.

Blue Spring (Aoi Haru)

Depressing, sad, bleakly set Japanese teen drama based on a Taiyo Matsumoto manga, describing the coming-of-age travails of a bunch of delinquents at a under-performing all-boys school, wondering what they want to do with the rest of their lives. I like the soundtrack by Thee Michelle Gun Elephant; come to think of it, Aoi Haru might as well be another marketing excuse to display the Japanese alternative/punk rock band's music.

Hirofumi Arai's performance as the protagonist's tragic, anti-heroic friend takes the (fish) cake--especially with the transformation in character later on in the last act or so.

TRAILER:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iQvVPhQXw5w&feature=related

I must watch this. By the way, you probably know this already, but the kanji for 'Aoi' (Â meaning 'blue') and 'Haru' (t meaning 'spring') together read as 'seishun', meaning 'youth'.

Silmido

Korean cinema has yet to disappoint me. Silimido is about a group of prisoners and lowlives that is forced to become a special elite force of the South Korean army to kill Kim Il Sung during the late 60's. It is brutal and powerful. Unlike so many military movies there is no easy patrionism here and no pretty ideals.
The result is raw, strong and all too real.

I've been looking forward to watching Silmido! It's on my queue list!

Make sure you watch it! I am sure you will like it.
And onwards with Korean movies:

I'm a Cyborg But That's Okay

Directed by Chan-wook Park, of whom I expect great things, this a wonderful movie about a girl who just so happens to believe that she is a cyborg. The entire plot revolves around the mental institution into which she is committed and the people she meets there. It has that mix of dark themes and whackiness that I always appreciate and the acting is top notch.
Through flashbacks and via surreal portions that show us the delusions of the several patients the characters become very believable and at the same time the insanity element is never quite gone. Very interesting is how the patients end up combining their pathologies that they borrow from one another.
All and all it's an unlikely setting for a movie that also has romance in it but it works very well. My only complaint is that the very final scenes were unnecessary, the movie would be stronger had it ended 10 minutes earlier.
It manages not to be depressing unlike 90% of the movies in the same vein and is a breath of fresh air. Strongly recommended. As someone who has had more contact with the legally insane than she would like I can say that this is a movie full of heart and with nuances that make it very moving.

"Restrepo"

There is no mawkish sentimentality or political abstractions clouding this documentary of a U.S. Army platoon in the Korangal Valley, Afghanistan. You are thrown into "the most dangerous place in the world," where human will is fought for at the greatest of personal risk.

Very humbling.

Makarizo - I saw that a few months ago. I cried so much during it; I'll never look at stoning the same way again.

I just saw the Manchurian Candidate with Denzell Washington and Meryl Streep. Very good film.
I also saw Contact. While I understood what they were saying, I thought that Christians were portrayed horribly and I didn't like that. But I loved the fact that it could help someone who is an atheist understand that they too have faith, just in a different thing. Definitely a lot to think about.

rgod,

I loved the original version of The Manchurian Candidate. What a tough movie!

I wonder if I'd like the remake.

Strider33 - I only saw 1/2 of the original Manchurian Candidate but want to see the other half. I agree, it was a good movie - Frank Sinatra was EXCELLENT in that film. Tina Sinatra (his daughter) was the producer of the remake. I felt that this was a good remake, based on the half that I saw - from what I understand the second half varied a bit from the original second half, which I would imagine, would keep fans of the original film interested as the story unfolds.

I just saw The Changeling with Angelina Jolie. I thought the movie was great and very well done. I cried a lot and I spent the whole movie appalled at the LAPD.

Found a dvd at my mum's that she hadn't even taken out of the cellophane - borrowed it and watched it tonight - it's called Life's Story by NPN videos - a nice scientific documentary about wildlife and points out the evidence against the theory of evolution and supports what the Bible says. I hope lots of people will see it because I thought it was really good.

The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. What a sad movie.

I'm left with two thoughts: when they die, we die. And there is no safe side of the fence.

It calls to mind othe fences... The Berlin wall, the security wall between Israel and the west bank, the wall between Arizona and Sonora, and gated comunities. And also, Robert Frost, Mending Wall.

Despicible Me

Loved it! Took my 12yo daughter and we thoroughly enjoyed it. Part of it reminded me of the old Spy vs Spy from MAD magazine.

There was one very touching moment and the girls are very cute!

5 outta 5 stars!

"Eclipse"

Bella is an idiot.
Her dad is an idiot.
In fact everybody in the whole town of Forks are idiots.

Otherwise, it was a pretty good movie. Can't wait for the next.

I had DVR'd "The Jensen Project" and just got around to watching it. Not bad, and WAY LESS product placement during this movie than the first Wal-Mart family movie "Secrets of the Mountain."

I just saw Salt and Inception. Two different genres of movies but I definitely prefer Salt. The twists and turns in the plot were great. I need to see it again on DVD to tie in some of the bits though. I was wondering what was the use of the spider but they revealed it towards the end. And some excellent jaw dropping reveals throughout the film. All in all an excellent action film - there were no loopholes. At least none that I detected, everything was neatly tied in and that gave it "believability".

Out of five, I give it four thumbs up.

I wonder if that's the movie I should have seen today.

I saw Inception, which I only somewhat enjoyed. So "Salt" was a fast-paced, action thriller from what it sounds like? I wouldn't mind watching something like that.

"Salt" Angelina is fashion model thin and beautiful. You can see the impact the Bourne trilogy has had on spy flicks. One gag was overdone and caused my suspension of disbelief to evaporate. After that I noticed a few other things I didn't buy.

*Angelina fighting all these much stronger men and in groups didn't look believable. The men were all a bit inept in hand to hand or weapons handling.

*All the safeguards seem impregnable yet there is some not so obvious weakness in all that Salt exploits.

*Her reason for fighting seems weak after the the flashbacks of training.

*Gags or stunts went one step too far to be believable.

*Plot was thin. This is more of an action movie.

*She was so thin and girly that the fighting sequences weren't believable. Was waiting for a strong wind to pick her up and blow her around. She didn't look athletic, just waif thin.

I was really bummed out as I was looking forward to this.

I know - we were talking about the men dancing and how if men did that today they'd be labelled 'gay' - but I don't see how it is less manly than eg playing soccer - athleticism, stamina, co-ordination, agility.

Another of my faves is My Fair Lady - can't imagine that being any better but I know I won't be able to resist seeing the remake anyway.

Tonight we've just finished watching another 'classic' - Airplane - wow! it is sooo soo so funny even after I've seen it a few times before. I remember seeing it at the pictures when it first came out. There are bits you remember, and there seems to always be bits you've never noticed before.

Dropped into a shop I hardly ever go in so while I was there I had a browse.... they had sets of 3 dvds for £6.99 a set, reduced to £4.99 a set! I bought a couple, one has Garfield, Ice Age and Robots, and the other has Alvin and the Chipmunks, Garfield 2, and Dr Seuss Horton Hears a Who.

Watched Robots last night and I really liked it :)

I'm now wondering if my brother and his family have those 'cos they would be ideal presents for them if they don't.

I've seen Ice Age before so I know that is good. Looking forward to finding out about the others.

Edit to add: We just watched Garfield. I have seen it before, but had forgotten most of it. Think it's a really good movie though - love the animation :)

I am now half watching Phantom of the Opera - well, it's on in the room while I am online (my daughter put it on) Another brilliant classic :)
