Il Divo

Not to be confused with the Italian opera group, this Il Divo is referring to Giuilio Andreotti, Italy's most notorious politician in its post-war history. The 7-time prime minister-turned senator for life, however controversial he is, regarding possible/reputed links with The Mafia, the P2 neo-Fascist Freemasons, and some of the more shadier members working within the Vatican, is depicted as an all too human figure, haunted by his contributive role in Aldo Moro's kidnapping and assassination (by Italy's radical Marxist terrorist group, The Red Brigades), the assassination of anti-Mafia magistrate Falcone, various murders of bankers, politicians, journalists, misc. high ranking figures, and the eventual downfall of Italy's Christian Democratic Party. Il Divo's Andreotti seems to give a sense of blunt truth telling of how Italian society works, given how notorious the nation's bureaucratic/governmental system works, forcing someone like Andreotti to play the quintessential Macchiavellian (sp?) figure, having to commit evil in order for good to continue functioning. In the performance dept., I guess The NY Times described it all too accurately, where Toni Servillo's Andreotti comes off as a deadpan mishmash of (filmmaker) Peter Bogdanovich & Peter Sellers.

*the film is obviously an acquired taste for anyone interested in international politics...

Blue Spring (Aoi Haru)

Depressing, sad, bleakly set Japanese teen drama based on a Taiyo Matsumoto manga, describing the coming-of-age travails of a bunch of delinquents at a under-performing all-boys school, wondering what they want to do with the rest of their lives. I like the soundtrack by Thee Michelle Gun Elephant; come to think of it, Aoi Haru might as well be another marketing excuse to display the Japanese alternative/punk rock band's music.

Hirofumi Arai's performance as the protagonist's tragic, anti-heroic friend takes the (fish) cake--especially with the transformation in character later on in the last act or so.

Thirteen Days

Starring Kevin Costner as Kenny O'Donnel, special assistant to president Kennedy.

It's the Cuban missile crisis of October 1962. The public events of those days are still engraved in my mind. We never came closer to a general nuclear exchange. The movie is pretty good. The action is mostly talk. Talk grips me as much as visual action.

I don't know how true to life the movie was, except for events that made it into the public eye.

If you're interested in the subject, the documentary by Errol Morris, "Fog of War: Eleven Lessons from the Life of Robert S. McNamara," is fascinating.

WGBH has an interview with Robert McNamara from 1986.

"The A-Team"

Latest high-concept action film based on a 1980's television show #597--comes pre-assembled for ease in viewing. Suffers from villain overload--Brian Bloom as gun-for-hire menace is the best in the legion of bad-guys.

Mon Ange (My Angel)

Walloon prostitute (pop star Vanessa Paradis) takes up responsibilities with her late colleague's teenage/young adult son so as to convince her estranged ex that she could/can be a good wife/mother... except for the fact that during the road trip, the kid seems to be developing an attractive bond with the hapless heroine.

"The Bone Man"

What looks like a mundane detective story of the search for a man late on his car payments, falls down a rabbit-hole of plot turns and dry gallows humor.

"Le Amiche" (The Girlfriends)

Michelangelo Antonioni's rarely seen character study of friends in their not so ordinary lives.

Robin Hood

Ok I know it's been out for a few weeks. . . . but I really haven't had time for a movie in a few weeks.

This is the background story of Robin. Coming back from the crusades after the death of King Richard and the rise to power of Prince John.

The final battle sequence was a cross between Gladiator, Braveheart and Saving Private Ryan.

I loved it because I really love Ridley scott films and am a huge fan of Russell Crowe.

4 outta 5 stars

Legion starring Paul Bettany. Action, a bit of gore and creepiness...wasn't too impressed but it was nice to see him as the good guy for a change.

El Lobo (The Wolf)

Spanish, fact-based thriller about an intelligence officer sent in to infiltrate the Basque terrorist group, ETA, during the last years of Franco's Fascist Spain, circa 1973-1975. It seems the real-life, titular character has been in constant hiding ever since his legendary exploits--given how much ETA veterans despised him to the point that there seems to be a cottage industry of mass-manufacturing iconic pictures of "The Wolf"--with a bullet reserved for him, sort of like the anti-Che Guevara chic!

In search of justice, a modern Greek tragedy.

As Ree, Jennifer Lawrence is a study in selfless love and determination.

Bullet Ballet

Japanese urban drama concerning a guy getting obsessively involved with guns, pugilism, a local street gang--and the gang's only female member... all after witnessing the self-inflicted gunshot suicide of his fiancee(?)/girlfriend(?). In many ways it's Shinya Tsukamoto treading on Scorcese's Taxi Driver territory--all the while retreading on his own (Tsukamoto's) prior films like the first Tetsuo movies and Tokyo Fist.

27 Dresses. Synposis: Always the bridesmaid never the bride .... 27 times over.

While the show seemed to be about romance, it was actually about accepting and embracing what is real, and having the courage to live your own life and not being so consumed in other people's lives that you cease to live. The film was also saying that the right person for you is often unrecognized because they challenge you and don't allow you to stay in destructive patterns - because they see the best in you. The main character hid behind doing "good works" and thrived on being needed, but that was a cover for fear and insecurity. The man for her didn't play into her needing to be needed - and so she really didn't recognize him. Instead, the man who would be her husband told her the truth and loved her enough to confront her. Interesting show. I'd give the movie a B minus because it was slow in some parts and some of it felt contrived.

Valentine's Day. Synopsis: Los Angelenos and San Fransciscans love and lose on Valentine's Day.

I thought this was an interesting show, but it didn't feel cohesive. It felt like "Crash" in terms of the entertwining storyline - though not in content. But, I found myself losing track of the characters and I didn't really feel like I connected with any of them - except the Julia Robert's character. I'd give the movie a C.

"Come, Sweet Death"

The second installment in the excellent Detective Brenner trilogy (first-"The Bone Man")--black humor reveals a double murder and the bizarre conspiracy left behind.

I must watch this. By the way, you probably know this already, but the kanji for 'Aoi' (Â meaning 'blue') and 'Haru' (t meaning 'spring') together read as 'seishun', meaning 'youth'.

Silmido

Korean cinema has yet to disappoint me. Silimido is about a group of prisoners and lowlives that is forced to become a special elite force of the South Korean army to kill Kim Il Sung during the late 60's. It is brutal and powerful. Unlike so many military movies there is no easy patrionism here and no pretty ideals.
The result is raw, strong and all too real.

Just finished watching Fame. Fame is about a group of kids who go to the Performing Arts high school - it follows them from freshman through senior year. It was ok - I'd give it a C - primarily because I didn't feel that the characters were well developed - there were just too many of them and that wrecked the movie for me.

Only one main character in my opinion really grabbed me (the one who played Denise) - and that was more because of the actress, more than the writing. I also enjoyed the dance teacher (the actress who played Lilith in Frasier/Cheers) and singing teacher (Megan Mullawey sorry if I'm messing up her name) - particularly when she struggles to let them know what the life of an actor is REALLY like. But those moments unfortunately are few and far between in the movie.

The one thing I really liked though, is that there wasn't a bunch of sex and violence. I found that to be very refreshing.l

Just finished watching my last movie of the night: Dim Sum.

Very interesting story about a first generation chinese american woman and her relationship with her mother. She is devoted to her mother who thinks she is going to die because of something a fortune teller told her. The daughter is single and all of the older women want her to get married (really, really want her to get married). Slow movie, but I liked it because I felt like I got a chance to know the characters. Getting a sense as well of some of the issues in those women struggled with at that time ... about how much of chinese culture to keep, to discard, stereotypes from within and so forth. I enjoyed it. I'd give it a B +.

If anyone rents it though, I would say skip the outtakes from the extra's reel (Dim Sum Take Out) as some of it is quite objectionable unlike the rest of the movie.
