ORIGINAL: TrojanHusker A very good summation, by the BBC - Assessing America's 'imperial adventure' in Iraq quote:
Mr Rumsfeld was sent a careful, conscientious 900-page report by the state department containing detailed plans for the post-invasion period. He reportedly dumped it, unopened, straight into his waste-paper basket. Former Vice-President Dick Cheney, when asked by the Saudi foreign minister why the US insisted on going ahead with the invasion, answered: "Because it's do-able." A respected Iraqi dissident, who later became vice-president, has described how shocked he was to find, a few weeks before the invasion, that President Bush seemed wholly unaware that Muslims in Iraq were divided between Shia and Sunni Islam. Although it's hard to think of these 3 as "imperial" when the more one researches the more one thinks "stooges"; Donnie, Dick & Georgie. This isn't even news unless you're dealing with Neocons, teapots, and Republicans then of course it is all myth, lies, and trashing America.

I don't see where the US has benefitted in any way.

US soldiers in ‘kill team’ charged with killing civilians and keeping fingers as trophies quote:
Five of the soldiers are charged with murdering three Afghan men, allegedly killed for sport, in separate attacks this year. The other seven are accused of covering up the murders and assaulting a recruit who exposed the murders. quote:
The Army Times reported that a least one of the soldiers collected the fingers of the victims as souvenirs and that some of them posed for photographs with the bodies. SOURCE WormHeart

Obama meets families of USS Cole, Sept. 11 victims quote:
WASHINGTON (AP) - President Barack Obama held an emotional meeting Friday with relatives of victims of the bombing of the USS Cole and the Sept. 11 attacks who are still waiting for justice to be served years after the deadly acts of terrorism. http://www.necn.com/pages/landing?blockID=142742&tagID=21565 Cole families wait, as usual, this time for Gitmo answers quote:
Waiting is nothing new to these families. The spouses, children and parents of sailors killed aboard the destroyer Cole in 2000 have grown used to the wheels of justice turning slowly - when they turn at all. http://hamptonroads.com/2009/05/cole-families-wait-usual-time-gitmo-answers RoCk

So, why is this in the Iraq thread? Iraqi prisoners didn't go to Gitmo and there were no Iraqis involved in the Cole bombing just as there were none involved in the 9/11 hijackings.

How should I know? I just looked at the US soldiers charged with killing "civilians" post above mine. I don't see what that has to do with Iraq either. Is there more of a connection or something?

Is there more of a connection or something? Ah, I missed that one. The above was Afghan and yours would be closer to Afghan. I was surprised to find though that those from Iraq usually didn't end up in Gitmo.

Are you surprised to find that those from Gitmo ended up in Iraq? quote:
Baghdad - Four Iraqi prisoners from the US detention facility at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba have been handed over to the authorities in Baghdad, a Red Cross official told AFP on Monday. http://www.news24.com/World/News/Gitmo-prisoners-back-in-Iraq-20090209

Condemning this fresh leak, however, the Pentagon said: "This security breach could very well get our troops and those they are fighting with killed. Our enemies will mine this information looking for insights into how we operate, cultivate sources and react in combat situations, even the capability of our equipment." No, the reason they didn't want this to come out is that some of these are War Crimes, and of course we have to be seen as "better" that the insurgents. So much for moral high-ground.

If this guy was a U.S. citizen, this would warrant a hanging offense. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/10/18/wikileaks-founder-julian-_n_766594.html http://www.time.com/time/world/article/0,8599,2027260,00.html quote:
The whistleblowing website WikiLeaks today defended its release of 400,000 classified U.S. Army field reports from the Iraq war — the largest leak in U.S. history, surpassing the 77,000 Afghan war files the group leaked in July. Now dubbed the Iraq War Logs, the files reveal new details about civilian deaths, detainee abuse and actions by Iran during the war.

Prime Minister Maliki has declared there will be no 100 year war: quote:
Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki ruled out the presence of any U.S. troops in Iraq after the end of 2011, saying his new government and the country's security forces were capable of confronting any remaining threats to Iraq's security, sovereignty and unity. Mr. Maliki spoke with The Wall Street Journal in a two-hour interview, his first since Iraq ended nine months of stalemate and seated a new government after an inconclusive election, allowing Mr. Maliki to begin a second term as premier. A majority of Iraqis—and some Iraqi and U.S. officials—have assumed the U.S. troop presence would eventually be extended, especially after the long government limbo. But Mr. Maliki was eager to draw a line in his most definitive remarks on the subject. "The last American soldier will leave Iraq" as agreed, he said, speaking at his office in a leafy section of Baghdad's protected Green Zone. "This agreement is not subject to extension, not subject to alteration. It is sealed." Read more: http://www.foxnews.com/world/2010/12/28/iraqi-pm-says-forces-leave-time/#ixzz19Pl317jl
