How old is Elvis? Is he a Siamese? He sounds like my Siamese back when he was a couple of years old. Laura, so sorry to hear about your kitties.

I had a maine coon too. She was appropriately named Gizmo. She was pretty crazy too. She settled down a bit after she turned a year old, but she was very active and very persistent. She was my most active cat if memory serves.

Any new furrbaby news? Callie's coat has become quite greasy despite regular baths...she also has some dandruff - any idea what could be causing this? -reba.

Stop giving her baths. Unless she gets into something particulary dirty or needs a flea bath there is no reason to bath a cat. Cats clean themselves. The dandruff is probably caused by the frequent bathing drying her skin. The taste of the shampoo may be putting her off cleaning herself thus resulting in her not keeping her fur clean.

I've only ever given her baths when she's gotten dirty. I gave her a bath a few weeks ago (first time in about 9 months) because her fur had gotten just awful feeling. It's gotten that way again and I'm wondering if that coupled with her extreme weight gain following her spay may be something deeper? Or perhaps her gigantic status has made it hard for her to clean her fur and that's caused the greasy-ness and dandruff? -reba.

Now that I know she hasn't been bathed frequently and that she has quickly gained a significant amount of weight, she might be having a problem with her thyroid. Take to the vet to be tested.

I was looking into hypothyroidism for cats and she has some symptoms, so I'll call the vet up. It'll have to wait a payday or two but I'll get her in and looked at. Poor chunky little girl...she is not aging well. -reba.

A cat's fur can be a good indication of their health. If they aren't grooming it well, it's often a sign that something else is going on.

My husband Andrew rescued a kitten from across the street Friday evening. It has Siamese markings and a severe eye infection and also had tons of fleas. We bathed it, Andrew gently cleaned the crust from its eyes, we gave it some medication (Capstar) that killed all the fleas and it seems to be improving. When Andrew brought him in, one of his eyes was so crusted over it looked like he had a huge tumor growing out of the side if his head :( I was so horrified I began crying. It took nearly half an hour to get the dried discharge soaked enough to gently get it off. He's missing fur around his eyes, but they are clearing up. I have some medicine we are using for his eyes that we bought for one of our other cats, Orion, when he was a kitten with an eye infection from California Veterinary Supply that seems to be doing the trick. There has been almost no discharge from his eyes since Friday evening. The little guy is eating and drinking, but has an upper respiratory infection. It's basically a cat cold, and there's really not any medication available for it...it has to run its course, just like a human cold. We are constantly wiping his nose and periodically taking him into the bathroom and running the shower on hot to work up some steam to clear his congestion. He's been awake, curious, alert, exploring, eating, pooping, drinking and peeing, so far all seems to be as expected. He does seem to be gaining some weight as well. We're guessing he's maybe 8 weeks old. Right now he's laying on my shoulder purring as I'm typing this up. Even though he looks like a gremlin right now, he's beautiful with soft, fluffy fur and gorgeous blue eyes. It's amazing to me how sweet and loving this little guy is! We are praying he makes it, and so far it looks good. Your prayers are appreciated as well. I'll post some photos later.

Such a cuteheart. I think for me though it may be time for Elvis to go. I keep alternating between being relieved and sobbing. I do love my little furrbaby but I may not be the best home for him. He deserves to be in a home where he can go outside and play all day and get as much attention as he needs. -reba.

ORIGINAL: HisSweetGypsyRose I have some photos of Spiffy the Wonder Cat up on my Facebook page now. aw so sweet....he could be siamese or he could be a ragdoll...it's hard to tell when you don't know their origins. You'll know as he gets older. I have a ragdoll that looks very similar to him, gorgeous kitties that continue to be adorable. What a cutie pie and how blessed is he that ya'll found him and are taking care of him!

{{{reba}}} it's hard letting go of a pet, but it's good to do what's best for them. I am praying for you. Spiffy is continuing to improve, although he still looks like a gremlin with greasy eyes :P The ointment is doing the trick, though...there has been almost no discharge at all from his eyes in the last 24 hours. He has a voracious appetite, too...he loves his food and is drinking plenty of water. He's keeping his eyes open wider today, too...usually he's been squinting. It looks like his upper respiratory infection is going away, too. One of the cats that belongs to the lady across the street looks like it might be part Ragdoll...it's not fluffy, but has the markings of one. Spiffy sure loves to be held, or to sit or lay on my shoulder when I'm at the computer. So far he's been pretty mellow, but part of that may be because he hasn't felt well. Right now he's sitting in the window sill enjoying the morning sunlight. Doink, was your pony named after Misty of Chincoteague? I read all of the books by Marguerite Henry. My favorites were King of the Wind; San Domingo, The Medicine Hat Stallion; and Brighty of the Grand Canyon.

Very cute :) Spiffy continues to improve...he's not unsteady and wobbly when walking any longer, and he's gained more weight. I posted more photos of him from today, and included two from Friday night after he was cleaned up. The improvement is obvious. He is such a sweet little guy, I am in love :P

Any particular reason why my cat would be licking/cleaning/pulling a certain spot on his back and now he's loosing hair there??????? There's no nits or bugs and no rash. He's a Ragdoll with the long hair. Could it be stress because of the other kitty(8 mo. old).

It's hard to say why he's doing that. stress could be a reason. I did a goodle search on fur loss at the base of the tail and here is some of what came up: http://www.catster.com/forums/Cat_Health/thread/320163 http://www.manhattancats.com/Articles/hair_loss_in_cats.html http://animals.howstuffworks.com/pets/home-remedies-for-cats-ga6.htm From this site: quote:
That just leaves the patch of fur loss on your cat's rump near the base of her tail. A candle flame would have left the area looking burned and probably a little sooty. Typically, spots like this are due to some sort of skin irritation that causes a cat to lick and chew at the site. Does the skin look irritated in any way? Are the patches circular with a slightly raised "ring" look to them? What we're searching for are signs of a parasitic infestation that would cause your cat to worry at the site. This could be a flea or mite infestation, or even a fungal infection such as ringworm, which is fairly common in cats. At this point, there are several routes you can take. * One route would be to search your cat for signs of fleas, take the necessary steps to eliminate an infestation if you find anything and wait for the hair to grow back. * Another route would simply be to observe your cat's behavior for clues to the hair loss, and see if the bald patches grow in size. If they do, a trip to the vet is definitely in order. * A third route would be to let your vet take a look at the patches now and possibly take a skin scraping to check for mites beneath the skin. If you're really concerned about the loss, heading straight to the vet is probably the most direct way to discover what's going on. As I'm typing this, Spiffy is sitting on my shoulder leaning against my ear :D Here is this morning's photo: http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=1322309&l=b5a3c0488a&id=1538345016 I think getting uninterrupted sleep has been a huge help to him getting better; the love, too I don't know if you can tell in the photo, but he has the longest legs I've ever seen on a kitten! His paws are huge, too. I'm beginning to wonder how big he's going to get. He's also the most mellow kitten I've ever had, but part of that might be because he's been sick.

Our ragdoll is a year old, but apparently, he'll get even bigger...and heavier in the next 2-3 years. I'll find that ragdoll website that has all the information and post it here...

The chewing could also be because of dental problems. My Siamese was biting and chewing on himself, pulling out chunks of fur, and I took him to the vet and found out it was because of pain from his teeth and gums. I had no idea.
