I talked to the vet this morning and she said Tut seems to be feeling better. He's eating some and is more active. I figure this means caterwauling and trying to knock down his cage walls - he HATES being at the vet. Dr. Thorne said he was growling in the background when we were talking on the phone. She said giving him fluids at the vet's is just a short-term solution because he will eventually get dehydrated again and I'd have to keep bringing him back. I asked her what she would do if Tut belonged to her, and she suggested putting in a long-term catheter and giving him fluids at home. I have a couple of friends who did this with their elderly pets, and I asked her what that would involve as far as cost. She said there would be a cost for the procedure, which would include anesthetic, but the fluids themselves are inexpensive. She said she'll call me back this afternoon to let me know how he's doing. I'll probably be able to take him home today, and in the meantime I can decide what to do about giving him fluids at home.

Just wanted to let you all know I've started giving Tut fluids at home, and it's amazing how much better he seems to be feeling. He's eating like a little pig and has gained weight back, has started grooming himself again (you know a cat doesn't feel good if he doesn't groom himself), and is basically back to his old self. Sometimes when he's hanging around wanting to be fed or petted and is talking to me, I just scoop him up and hug him because I'm so glad to still have him.

Just found this thread.

I have two furrbabies.

Callie
She's 5 now and her full name is Callie Flower Hello Kitty (I let a 4 year old name her). I got her at a garage sale and love her to pieces. I've started calling her Chunky Butt because she has really packed on the pounds since she got spayed. She's so easy-going and has been there for me through a lot these last few years. Some people have said she looks like a bombay more than a DSH but I don't know what she is.

And

Elvis
He's 8 or so months old. I got him the week before Christmas. I was going through a "all of my friends are settling down and starting families I want a kitten" phase. I got him from a rescue. Elvis is more like a dog than a cat - he chases his tail, drinks out of the toilet, digs in the trash and is as needy as all get out. MMP and I take him on walks sometimes. He really loves being able to run around outside. It looks pretty ridiculous walking a cat but if it keeps him from tearing up my furniture and terrorizing Callie then I think it's worth it. I believe he is a main coon.

Sadly the two do not get a long.

I don't know what I'd do without my kitties.

No - they were just giving them away.

If you couldn't tell - I'm sort of an impulsive person. They asked me if I wanted one and I said sure. With Elvis I had been going to the pet store and just looking and after I picked him up he chose me - the next day I took him home.

It was quite a day when I got Cals. She was so little and she was so scared in the car. She ended up pooping all over me and then throwing up twice. She's been a very good kitty and pretty laid back. I have a question though that I forgot to post - lately she's gotten goobers in her eyes. Every day or so I'll clean her eyes and she has this black gunk that accumulates. It's clear if I catch it when it happens but if not, it turns black. Any idea what could be causing this? It's been happening for maybe a month now.

Did someone mention cats? I have 43--all rescued in one way or another. And all spayed/neutered, too. I have three "groups." Usually, a new cat(s) joins my house family of cats. They have the run of the house and a cat door that leads outside to my backyard that has a Purrfect Fence so they are completely safe from getting on the road, neighborhood dogs, etc.

Then some years ago, there were 13 outside cats that had to be removed from where they were. Nobody wanted them and they would have had to be put down. So I took them in; they were used to being outside, so I made the inside of my backyard shed look like a little barn with straw bales, etc. I put up a second Purrfect Fence (that company couldn't exist without me, ha!) and these cats are referred to as my backyard cats.

Three months ago, a local Humane Society closed down and the 14 cats had to go. Again, nobody would take even one. I had volunteered where the cats were kept every Saturday and knew the cats. So now I have a third group of cats! These live in a large room in my house with a cat door in the window. We built a third outdoor enclosure for them at the side of the house.

Now that's it--I have no more space for any more groups of cats! I'll still take in one or two at a time--my sister says I'm a needy-cat magnet! But she has learned from me and has rescued quite a few cats herself!

And I feed strays/ferals (all spayed/neutered, too, trap/neuter/return) at four different locations in the nearby town. Yes, the cat food companies couldn't exist without me, either!

How wonderful IGS.

If I had the room, time and money I would have a cat sanctuary.

As it is I just have my 2 elderly catkids.

If elvis does not quit taking the little basil plants I have or messing with the aloe vera plant while I'm asleep he is going to lose a paw!

Anyway - any tips on how to wrestle your furbaby to clip its claws? Elvis has grown past baby stage and is becoming quite a handle!

Don't bother clipping his claws. He'll take care of them himself. If he is clawing your furniture you might try finding a repellent or purchasing something he can claw. Clipping his claws will actually make him claw more as he resharpens.

He scratches. Even when he is kneading his claws are so sharp. Is there anyway to prevent this from hurting?

Throw him off of you immediately. It's a matter of training. He'll learn how much you will tolerate.

jeans...or leather...

or do what I did, gently place him near his scratching post every time he starts to scratch or kneed. I scratch his paws on the post and then walk away. It took 3 times and now Niko does all of his scratching and sharpening on a post and not my leg.

I just hold Lucy down and clip fast. I don't like to let hers grow because she kneads me in the middle of the night. I like her to do it, just not with claw tips showing.

We feed a few (mostly favorite) stray cats in the neighborhood and one of them now seems to call our garage home. Two of them were starting to play on our garden chessboard. From my chess website. The cat playing Black didn't seem too interested in the game but the one playing White was getting ready to make the first move.

Our one year old cat, Lazar, died suddenly yesterday. He was an indoor/outdoor cat. Our neighbor found him. He hadn't been acting himself the last few days. Just acting really lazy. Couldn't decide if he just had a bug or if the heat was bothering him. The evidence from his body's condition suggests that he probably had either twisted his bowel or had an obstruction.

We are done with cats for awhile. That's two cats lost in the last 8 months. Besides, the dog is plenty of animal in the house for us. If I want to enjoy a cat I can go watch the 20-some kittens that are taking over the neighborhood play.

It is really hard. He didn't act sick, just not himself. He never behaved as if he was in pain or had discomfort. Monday evening he was sleeping on the chair and the dog came over and nudged at him. Usually he would have proceeded to clean the dog's ears or start playing. That night he just ignored the dog and acted a bit put out.

I'm sorry for the loss laura.

I've got my hands full with Elvis and Callie.

I'm really starting to wonder if I should give Elvis back. I just don't know if I am the kind of home he needs. I can't tell if this being crazy thing is a phase or if he'll always be like this.

I'm getting tired of the jumping, the scratching, even the licking, the attacking Callie, the jumping on EVERY table and counter constantly (water and yelling do not work), the escaping anytime a door is open, and the getting into EVERYTHING!

It's worse than having a toddler around...I don't know. I love him to pieces but I just can't stand him most of the time.

Callie has crusties in her eye...any idea what might be causing this? It's really quite gross.

Laura, I am sorry for your loss.

Reba, cats can get cold and allergies just like people. You can take a small smear of neosporin, wipe it on your index finger, then wipe it across her (closed) eyes ... in case she's got some sort of infection. Or you could visit the vet for some significantly pricier eye ointment.
