My cat and I have been having some issues with the cat food I've been feeding him, so I was wondering if you all might have some suggestions. Because my cat is old and pretty much does nothing except eat and sleep, I've been alternating canned cat food, usually a small can like Fancy Feast, and a little dry cat food, and the next day a meal of all dry weight control cat food. Until fairly recently, Tut would wolf down all the food on the canned food nights and grudgingly eat the dry food on the alternate nights, but now he doesn't eat much of the dry food. I've tried different kinds, and he used to love Iams in particular, but now he sometimes won't eat much of even that. It worries me when he doesn't eat his dry food because I feed him once a day (he has issues with a nervous stomach/vomiting and I don't want him eating all day and getting sick all over the house), and I know there are times when he's hungry because he didn't eat his dry food. Sometimes I give in and give him canned food, but the canned isn't weight control and I'm concerned that if I feed him all wet food, he'll gain weight. Does anyone know of a wet or moist (pouch) weight control cat food, or can suggest an alternative so he'll eat but not get fat? Thanks.

Have you checked his teeth? Older cats often avoid dry food because of teeth problems.

He's missing some teeth, but he was eating the dry food more or less enthusiastically before when the teeth were already missing. Sometimes he eats all of the dry food, and other times he hardly touches it. This is what's puzzling.

I forget if you already said this, but is your kitty using his litter box? I mean, does he "do" anything in it?

If he's not eating but drinking a lot of water...that is definitely an indication of something wrong, but your vet would be better to diagnose that.

I hope he gets to feeling better soon.

Yes, he definitely uses the litter box for both operations, if you know what I mean. As far as I can tell, he doesn't want to eat the dry food because he wants canned food and thinks I'll give him something else, and when I don't, sometimes he won't eat the dry food and goes hungry. On days I give him canned and a little dry, I've recently been putting the canned food in his dish and then sprinkling the dry food on top. When I set the dish down last night, he looked at it and then looked at me as if to say, "I know what you're doing, and I don't want that dry food!" I said, 'EAT IT!" And he did.

My cat passed at 17 years old. She could not eat dry food for at least the last year and a half. She also could not maintain her weight. I had to give her canned food all the time. She also was throwing up a lot. I began feeding her Iams canned kitten food. She didn't throw that up and she started maintaining her weight.

I gave my cat just wet food last night, no dry food mixed in, and, to my surprise, he didn't eat all of it. I was standing in the kitchen looking at his food dish when he came in. Yes, I talk to him like he's a person, which he is, as Garfield says, "a little person with fur and fangs." He usually looks me in the eye when I talk to him (my mom has commented on this). I said, "Why didn't you eat your food? I thought you liked canned food." As I was lecturing him, he wouldn't look me in the eye, just kept looking at the floor. It was so funny! He ate the rest of the food later.

Niko had his 2nd follow-up after cataract surgery and she said both his eyes looked AWESOME! and that he should be able to see from both of them.

I told her about the ceiling fan fascination and she laughed and said, well we can't do brain function, only eye sight.

He's down now to only 5 drops/meds and we'll be tapering him off those in a few weeks.

I need to grab some camera batteries so I can post a new picture of him with clear eyes!

Glad to hear Niko is doing so well. If that's him in your photo, he's a beautiful cat.

Glad the boy is doing so well, doink.

He is beautiful.

I think it is normal to have conversations with cats...

but then I sing "opera" to my catkids--

they tolerate it.

I have conversations with my cats all the time. I know for a fact that D.C. understands English completely and I'm sure Rocky and Sierra do too.

I'm worried about my cat now because I put out wet food for him last night mixed with a little dry, and when I got up this morning, he hadn't touched it. I threw it out and put out some dry food, but when I got home this afternoon, it looked like he hadn't eaten any of that either. A few minutes ago I opened another cup of wet food, the same kind as I gave him last night. He ate a few bites and then left the rest. He's still drinking water, but not eating. This has happened within the last week or so. I typed "cat drinks water but won't eat" into a search engine and one of the results was kidney failure. I got him up in my lap and looked at his teeth, which seemed to be okay, but he's lost weight and I can feel his ribs and backbones more than before. He still wants to be petted and sits in my lap, and he still talks to me, but he sleeps a lot too. I'm going to make an appointment for him at the vet, but in the meantime would like some feedback.

I got out a piece of American cheese, which Tut loves, and he scarfed it down, so that got me to thinking. I fixed a pork chop for supper a night or two and he definitely wanted that. I went and bought four cans of the fishiest, stinkiest Fancy Feast I could find and just gave him a can. He's already devoured over half the can. I'm so relieved! I'd gotten him some Meow Mix wet food that comes in cups, and I guess he just decided he didn't like it.

He left some of the Fancy Feast, but I'm hoping he'll eat it later. He looked at me so beseechingly when I was eating my dinner, I knew he must be hungry.

I dropped Tut off at the vet this morning - he's still acting like he doesn't feel well and he didn't eat any more food. Please pray. I'm going to check during my break to see if they've called.

I just talked to the vet and she says Tut has advanced kidney failure. She asked me if I wanted her to treat him, and I said yes. She said she'd give him fluids intravenously and try to get him to eat, and then check him again tomorrow morning. I know at some point I'll have to let him go, but I'm not ready to do that yet.
