Tink, that was a great story! My sister named her cat Cupcake, at least until she took her to the vet and found out that she's a he!! Now they just call him Kitty. Most of you know that I'm studying counseling/psychology, so just indulge me for a moment. There is some belief that birth order influences children's personality. First born children tend to be conscientious, conventional, and want things their way. The younger-born children know no boundaries and are risk takers, have a good sense of humor, immature, and attention seeking. Now, meet my two children, Gracie and Patches. Gracie is very conscientious and her sleeping and eating areas are very clean and tidy. But she was lonely, so I got her a companion. Patches is your typical youngest-child. She's also a typical kitten and is into everything (see my facebook page for her recent encounter with a candle!! hehe). Well, she makes a mess of everything, especially the food and water bowls!! The food bowl must stay in a plate of water to keep the ants from invading the food. Just this morning, I had to throw out more food because the ants are still here. And because she's not careful, the food bowl will go to the edge of the plate of water , providing no protection against the ants. Oh, and the food constantly falls into the water, creating a stinky mess!! Ugh! Not only that, but now she likes to play with the water bowl. I will often hear the water bowl (which is metal) scooting along the floor, sloshing water everywhere. I refuse to clean this up, but she refuses to change her ways, too. So here it is, not even 9:00, and they're already out of water! And I have no money for a non-skid mat or another watering system. What is a mother to do????? *Disclaimer: most of the birth-order theory has been refuted, but it makes for a good story, no?

LOL! Patches sounds like fun! Okay, I gotta tell you about Vanilla last night. Vanilla has FIV, (The feline version of AIDS, the vet said, but it's spread by cat fights, which Vanilla was in a couple of, and took the worst of, even though he's neutered) and he's not supposed to go outside. However, in the three or four years since he was diagnosed, he still hasn't gotten that figured out. He often runs for the door if he sees any of us go out. Usually we catch him and turn him back, but some of us are better at it than others. If he makes it outside, there's no catching him. He comes back in his own time. So far, he's always actually come back. One of his favorite times to try to run outside is when I'm leaving for work. At that time, I'm loaded down with a laptop, a bag of food, and another bag, and it's harder to catch him. I've learned to watch for him whenever I go out. Tonight, however, I didn't see him, so I headed outside. As soon as I was closing the front door behind me, I heard it--loud meows over my head. There was Vanilla, on the roof and looking for a way down. I couldn't reach him, and didn't have time to try. Besides, he used to do this all the time in the old days, before he got sick. He can get down if only he remembers where. He can't get down by the front door, which was what he wanted. He has to go around to the side, where he can get on the privacy fence. I figured he wasn't infecting any other kitties up there, and I didn't have time to deal with it, so I told my dh where the cat was and then went on to work. I don't know if he got in the house tonight or not. I guess I'll find out in the morning when I get home.

This is sooooo true for mah Things! Thing 1 is very calm, organised, typical Type A personality. Thing 2 is crazy, attention seeking, has a GREAT sense of humour and very quick witted.

Answering your poll, the oldest cat I've ever "owned" (how do you own a cat?) was 13 yrs. Tabby was her name and she was an outside cat until she had kittens. Then, whether Dad wanted to or not she was an inside/outside cat. She would find a way in. She'd been known to fight raccoons, opossums, other cats, and dogs. She always walked away, everything else RAN. I've seen her send a dobie UP a tree, and stop two dogs from fighting by calmly walking up to them and slapping both of them. This is when the dobie(neighbor's dog) went up the tree, and Brownie,(a dingo mix) and our dog ran home. After that with an irritated flick of her tail, she walked home. Many more adventures she had (including chasing down and killing a full grown rabbit to bring home to her kittens) until she went behind the woodpile lay down and went home.

I don't have one but if I had a house I might consider it so the cats could enjoy the fresh air. My cats sit on the balcony--many floors up--so they are safe from meanies.

I don't have anything like that, but after looking at the link, I think it might be just the thing for our FIV afflicted kitty, who has been confined to the indoors by the vet, unless he can be somehow contained, and who, after about three years of such confinement, still hasn't resigned himself to it! On second thought, looking at the $105 price tag makes it look a good bit less appealing. It might be worth it, but it looks like a lot to me.

I had a dear cat - golden color - I loved him so much - He lived with me for 20 years. I found him as a tiny kitten, and he never wanted to leave me. God bless you, nice friend from God.

My Siamese, King Tut, will be 19 this month, which is 92 in human years. He's turned into this funny little old man. He loves drinking from the bathtub faucet and will dash ahead of me if I'm going to the bathroom. He jumps into the tub and waits for me to turn the faucet on. If I'm taking a shower and he thinks I'm taking too long, he'll caterwaul as if to say, "Hurry up and get out of there so I can get a drink!" He's gotten hard of hearing, so sometimes I think he can't hear me if I'm in another room and he'll let out a yell. I call back to him and that seems to satisfy him that I'm still there. Sometimes I wonder what's going on in that little feline mind.

. . . .... I think Quasimodo was 16 or 17. He was really bad during his last few days. It seemed like he was the only stable 'person' in our household at the time! He was ready to go...

Feeding question ...... baby cat will be 6 mo. in a few weeks and is currently eating Iams kitten food. Big cat likes baby cat's food and vice versa. Is it ok to switch baby cat to big cat Iams ???? Big cat will get bigger if he keeps eating baby cats's food.

I would mix half and half for a week and watch their tummy and litter box for anything that's not quite right. Other than that...start switching. 6 months is usually ok. The only thing our vet cautioned us with was the cheap cat food is like little friskies, etc. They have tons more filler/fat in them and are for cats what McD's and Burger King are for humans...junk food. He said he used Iams for his cats and any variety of that worked well. Purina and Iams and Science Diet are the 3 that the AVA watch closely for nutrition and endorse "legally." I say legally cause many brands use the AVA approval when they're not. They get away with it by having one vet approve it and using that's vet's affialiation status.
