ORIGINAL: JDParris I have never heard of Dan Britton. I find the "ultra" low down bass singers quite fasinating. There is this new quartet called "Spoken 4" out of Branson. They have a bass singer by the name of Cecil Stringer. Never heard of him until recently. If you get a chance to pick up their live concert CD, check out their version of "Beautiful Life". This bass dude hits a note so low that it should be against the laws of God and man. Hey! I just saw Spoken 4 in concert Thanksgiving weekend! Isn't Cecil great on A Beautiful Life? I think Cecil is a GREAT BASS SINGER! I love Spoken 4's Live Cd, its awesome. But nothing compares to seeing them live. MAN! - He doesn't even have to put any effort into hitting those low notes. He hits a C1 (double low C) every night, and hits those low notes so effortlessly he makes it look like its as easy as breathing. After seeing them live a few weekends ago I feel that this "new" quartet is really going to go somewhere in the future. They have a GREAT sound. I think the most distinguishing part of a quartet is the bass singer, and if you ever hear Cecil, his voice will definitely stand out in your mind.

The ongoing debate about who is the lowest bass singer in Southern Gospel, I suppose will always be with us. I have been listening to SG for almost 40 years, with a special interest in the Bass vocals, and parts. I have evaluated almost all of the major Bass singers through the years. I like Ray Dean Reese's, voice because it is strong and unique. George Younce was not only a great bass, he was one of SG's greatest singers - period! Of course J.D. Sumner set the standard, with his vocals an octive below the normal bass range. My evaluation of Bass does not just involve low. It really helps if they can actually sing too. (I have heard some that were not very good singers) My classification of a great bass goes beyond just low notes, to how about strong low notes. When it comes to strong, in my opinion, for the last 20 + years Mike Holcomb has been in a class by himself. Many of the lower bass notes that are produced, though impressive, remind me of an old war movie track, with the low drone, or humming sound of the bombers flying over France. Mike Holcomb's notes are authoritative, and loud all the way down to the CC. And how about the ability to sing an octive below the normal bass range? Here again, I think Big Mike is the current reigning King. His E below low C is loud and strong, and he constantly sings loud and clear in the range below where most bass singers hit bottom. (and he lives there!) No humming or droning overtones here, just pure, world class boot - lace bustin', bass, the likes of, that I certianly have not heard equaled. Then, there is the man himself. I have had the pleasure of meeting and talking to Mike several times. I know he has a great Christian testimony, which is the most important thing of all. Is Big Mike the greatest bass ever? No! I do not think anyone can prove who is better, or even lower than who. To me, I like the strength of Big Mike's floor - joist ratteling lows. But that is just me Some people Like the smooth "George Younce" sound. (it's pretty hard to dispute their point) Some have other standards by which to judge their favorite "bass man" by. That is where I will keep it. There is no such thing as the greatest bass ever. The only thing that really matters, after all, is who your FAVORITE bass singer is. Find your favorite bass man. enjoy his style, and marvel at, "how in the world can anyone do that"?! But don't stop there. Appreciate all of the great and unique bass singers out there. There is a great new young crop of bass singers constantly emerging, and some of the best have not even really been discoverd yet. That is what makes it all so much fun!!! possumrld

Yes, Big Mike is probably the lowest and best bass singer going today. I also agree that George Younce was possibly the best SG of all time as he was a very good bass singer with a very wide range. Some of the finest bass singers of the past included Chief (style, moves, facial expressions, movie star good looks), London Parris (adored by the fans, possibly the most pleasant bass voice ever, comical, the only man who could replace JD when he left the Blackwoods), John Gresham (very solid bass of the Thrasher Brothers), Tommy Thompson (most underrated bass, did a great job with the Statesmen and the Stamps), Billy Todd (classic bass of the Florida Boys and Dixie Echoes) and JD (unbelievable low, no recording does him justice, you just had to be there to believe it). Harold Gilley could have been one of the greats as he was second only to JD in hitting the lowest notes pleasantly and did some great imitations; wish he would come back to SG with a "classic style" group. Will of any other of today's bass singers be regarded as a "great" of our time?

Hidee, In regards to your last sentence, I believe Gerald Williams of The Melody Boys Quartet of Little Rock, AR will be considered one of the greats of "our time". This is his 60th year of singing full time Gospel Quartet Music, and he is finally beginning to receive some of the credit that he, in my opinion, so deserves. His peers in the Gospel Music industry have considered him one of the best for years. Go to their website and listen to his bass voice - he has it all! www.themelodyboysquartet.com quote:

There was an earlier post about a Russian bass, well actually there have been several. The thing that impresses me about those guys is the fact that they sing in auditoriums that seat a couple thousand people and sing in a choir of a couple dozen guys and you can still hear them without a mic. Either that or they sing over an orchestra and still fill the room.

I remember reading not long ago that JD said the low bass title should go to either Mike Holcomb or Cecil Stringer. Kind of hard to argue with that.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t4NrhoYeVa8 Here a bass singer goes well down to Eb1. That's certainly not J.D. as people tell in comments, just look at his face. But who then?

They're lipsynch'ing to "Christmas Carol of Love" by JD Sumner and the Stamps which is a Christmas version of "Rainbow of Love" that JD and the Stamps made famous.

There are many songs by The Dove Brothers on you tube, I believe Lonesome Road would be a good example of David Hesters smooth, powerhouse, controlled bass voice! We all have opinions on the best bass and our favorite! I respect everyones! God bless!

He goes down to F1 there, but e.g. Cecil Stringer has definitely more voice in that range. As for higher notes, around A1, David's voice is just excellent. One of the best I think. BTW, here's Vladimir Miller's most powerful A#1 (without close microphone, in a very large hall): http://www.primefan.ru/stuff/music/samples/miller.mp3

Gerald Williams of the Melody Boys Quartet of Little Rock, Arkansas, without a doubt, is one of the lowest bass singers singing today. He also has a distinctive vocal quality that very few bass singers still possess. His diction is flawless. One singer you can spot just by listening.By the way, they will be in Alabama with us on June 4,5,& 6. See their schedule at :www.melodyboysquartet.com. They will be at our church on Friday night, 6/05/09. Hope all can be with us for a great concert.

Just my humble opinion, everyone has their fav and best, all think they are correct! I also like Tim Duncan and thought JD Sumner was great! God bless!

I finally got to see the Inspirations, but only on tv. I would have to agree with others that Mike Holcomb is really low, and with quality.

Cecil Stringer has been involved in SGM for 27 years now and I thoroughly enjoy his bass singing! He's sang with some pretty big groups. When he joined the Blackwoods, he was only their 6th bass singer in that groups 60 year history. He has also sang with the Diplomats, the Steeles, the Cumberland Quartet - to name a few. I understand he was a student of Leroy Abernathy and performed live concerts with him, which sounded pretty prestigious. Cecil has performed on over 60 group albums and 13 solo Cds! I'd say he's well recorded! I love to hear Cecil sing Beautiful Life, Hold Me and Rainbow of Love. And if you guys enjoy hearing him sing Beautiful Life, you should hear him do God Made A Way! Not only do you hear great bass singin', but he really lets his good humor shine on that one!

You'll certainly appreciate his vocal abilities and enjoy his personality.

I haven't read all the comments on this thread, so this point most likely has been brought up numerous times already. Anyway, I know this thread is about the "lowest" current bass singer, but IMO there is more to being a good bass singer than just going low all the time. The question is, can you also sing a bass solo that is actually melodious? For this reason, I really enjoy listening to Aaron McCunn and Jeremy Lile. If you want to hear some awesome singing by a bass singer, listen to Aaron's bass solos on the song "Teach Me Lord to Wait" from Gold City's Live at NQC dvd. No wonder he has been compared to George Younce.

I have to agree with you on Aaron McCune he has an awesome solo voice and I listen and sing along with him almost everyday to try to improve mine. Also Aaron is a real nice guy and I have talked to him in person several times about singing bass and he has helped me alot. In my opinion he is a all around good person. But this is the thread for the lowest down current bass singer so asfar as the lowest CURRENT I would have to say Mike Holcomb is one of them if not the lowest he is close to it. quote:
