KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — Afghan officials said Wednesday that firing Gen. Stanley McChrystal would disrupt progress in the war and could jeopardize a pivotal security operation under way in Taliban strongholds in the south.

At the end of a one-hour video conference Tuesday night with President Barack Obama, Afghan President Hamid Karzai expressed his confidence in the top NATO commander in Afghanistan, Karzai spokesman Waheed Omar said.

McChrystal was summoned to Washington to explain disparaging comments published in Rolling Stone magazine that he and his top aides made about Obama's national security team.

The uncertainty over the leadership of the war comes amid mounting violence. NATO announced eight more troop deaths Wednesday for a a total of 75 this month — matching the death toll of the deadliest month of the nine-year war in July 2009.

President Obama announced Wednesday that he has accepted Gen. Stanley McChrystal's resignation as the commander of U.S. forces in Afghanistan and nominated Gen. David Petraeus to replace him, following a scathing article in which he and his aides were quoted criticizing the administration.

McChrystal got his marching orders as he held a face-to-face meeting at the White House, where he met with the president after a meeting with Defense Secretary Robert Gates at the Pentagon.

The Wednesday meeting preceded a regular session of the administration's strategy team for Afghanistan, held in the White House Situation Room. Normally, McChrystal would have joined via teleconference but he was summoned to Washington as he faced a private flogging over the article that appeared in Rolling Stone.

Cops who staff bridges and tunnels in New York City were read harrowing details of a terrorist threat Wednesday advising them to be on the lookout for a fuel-filled tanker meant to explode prior to a secondary blast designed to decimate any first responders.

The message, which was read by police brass, noted that as 10:30 am Tuesday, "there is a threat to all crossings, as of this point, being treated as credible, that some type of tanker will explode causing us to respond."

"At some point during the response, a second explosion (will occur) causing injury to all first responders to this incident," the message noted.

Among the many who have caricatured the Tea Party movement, the most disappointing, to me, have been progressive Christians. Reverend Jim Wallis, arguably the most influential progressive Christian activist in Washington, founder and editor of Sojourners and friend to President Obama, Bono, and various other world leaders, recently wrote an article entitled "How Christian is Tea Party Libertarianism?" His answer -- that it is not Christian at all -- will hardly surprise anyone who knows Jim Wallis.

EL PASO, Texas (AP) - A 15-year-old Mexican boy shot and killed by a U.S. Border Patrol agent was among El Paso's most wanted juvenile immigrant smugglers, according to federal arrest records reviewed by The Associated Press.

The records show Sergio Adrian Hernandez Huereca had been arrested at least four times since 2008 and twice in the same week in February 2009 on suspicion of smuggling illegal immigrants across the U.S.-Mexico border. Hernandez was repeatedly arrested along the U.S. side of the border near downtown El Paso, not far from where he was killed, but was never charged with a crime by federal prosecutors.

A Border Patrol agent shot and killed Hernandez June 7 while trying to arrest illegal immigrants crossing the muddy bed of the Rio Grande. Some witnesses said a group of people on the Mexican side were throwing rocks at the agents. Agents are generally permitted to use lethal force against rock throwers.

Christian School Group Loses Case @ SCOTUS

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg had the opinion and said in requiring the Christian Legal Society "in common with all other student organizations--to choose between welcoming all students and forgoing the benefits of official recognition, we hold, Hastings [College of the Law] did not transgress constitutional limitations.

The CLS students seeking official recognition argued their First Amendments were violated when officials refused to grant them collective access to campus resources. The Court today ruled against that argument saying that CLS "seek not parity with other organizations, but a preferential exemption from Hastings' policy. The First Amendment shields CLS against state prohibition of the organization's expressive activity, however exclusionary that activity might be. But CLS enjoys no constitutional right to state subvention of its selectivity."

Members of CLS must adhere to certain beliefs including the determination that premarital sex and all homosexual conduct is immoral. The group's Statement of Faith makes clear that anyone violating these practices is subject to removal from the group.

~~~~~ As old time readers know I have personally assisted ex-offenders in the past. One used to go in & out of jail & prison for shoplifting, assault in the process, etc. to feed a bad drug problem. His NJ mom & I tried to get him into treatment (which he never completed-being drawn back to drugs, street life &crime) , & to try and get other help. He used to briefly stay w/ me while we got him into programs, and I assisted in other ways-including w/ court cases. Readers might recall, a couple Christmases ago I got him to David Wilkerson's Times Square Church (held in a former Broadway theater) for a Broadway quality Christmas Show (all about the reason for the season-in modern terms)--it brought tears but not much change. Finally, after his last prison bid, he got into a program , here in Bed-Stuy called Ready, Willing & Able-where I've had friends work, and one of my former staff is now a director. They put him to work cleaning streets in business districts w/ others (they have community board contracts), helped him get a drivers license, got him trained in exterminating & he is now still working w/ Ready, Willing & Able as an in-house worker & works a day a week w/ an exterminator as an apprentice & got his license for that too. Over the many years that I've known him, he has never stayed clean w/ some exceptions when a judge might give him hard time upstate. This week, he celebrates one year of being clean & sober (they do test); & I am treating him later in Manhattan to a movie & dinner....last night by phone he was praising God for his recovery & realizes that The Lord holds the blueprint for our lives in his very hands...needless to say---bb1 an old drug dealer, criminal, drug & alcohol abuser, ex-offender--- that had God open a NJ jail door for me-- through an absolute miracle (where a high school drop-out got accepted to a college & a " hanging" judge sprung open the door), was edified to hear his testimony. God can change any situation..two ex-prisoners will acknowledge that later today--Praise God! ~~~~~

Inouye, Third in Line to Presidency, Backs Hawaii Separatism

Remember when George W. Bush was Commander in Chief and every single American was made thoroughly cognizant, 24/7, that we were indeed a nation at war? Remember when daily casualty counts were broadcast by every mainstream media outlet? Remember when nightly reporters' debates and soliloquies invariably centered on Iraq and Afghanistan?

Of course, we all remember.

And it would take a ninny of rare ostrich-level head-burying skill not to notice the dearth of war news now that we have a liberal/progressive kumbayah president as Commander in Chief. Why, in all probability, a great many Americans actually do think that all wars have been canceled around the globe just as the fantasy-land seas have begun to recede.

In the shallows of the liberal mind, if it isn't on the front page of the New York Times traitors' den or billowing from the rabid mouth of Keith Olberman or showing up in cute-Katie's death count, there is no war. Out of sight, out of mind, as the saying goes. And there is nothing more transparent about our mainstream media today than its willful see-no-war, hear-no-war, report-no-war disposition.

However, according to Barton, when the Founders reflected on what they felt upcoming Fourth of July celebrations might -- and should -- look like, John Adams said it should also be a day when we remember God's hand in deliverance and a day of religious activities when we committed ourselves to Him in "solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty."

....When asked about “a socialist,” 33 percent of likely voters say it describes Obama “very well,” 22 percent say “well,” 15 percent say “not too well,” and 25 percent say “not well at all.”

In other words, 55 percent of likely voters think “socialist” is a reasonably accurate way of describing Obama.

A warning that federal tax officials will need more congressional funding to administer the Democrats’ health reform law has rekindled the partisan debate over its cost effectiveness.

Senior Republicans have said for months that the new responsibilities required of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) under the legislation would saddle the agency with billions of dollars in additional costs — expenses not accounted for in the bill.

A Wednesday report from the National Taxpayer Advocate (NTA), an independent watchdog within the IRS, backed those claims, finding that the agency currently lacks the resources to take on the new duties.

BOSTON — In a private meeting with White House officials this weekend, Democratic governors voiced deep anxiety about the Obama administration’s suit against Arizona’s new immigration law, worrying that it could cost a vulnerable Democratic Party in the fall elections.

While the weak economy dominated the official agenda at the summer meeting here of the National Governors Association, concern over immigration policy pervaded the closed-door session between Democratic governors and White House officials and simmered throughout the three-day event.

At the Democrats’ meeting on Saturday, some governors bemoaned the timing of the Justice Department lawsuit, according to two governors who spoke anonymously because the discussion was private.

“Universally the governors are saying, ‘We’ve got to talk about jobs,’ ” Gov. Phil Bredesen of Tennessee, a Democrat, said in an interview. “And all of a sudden we have immigration going on.”

Attorney General Eric Holder says there's a real question about whether a terrorist suspect such as alleged Sept. 11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed can face the death penalty if he were to plead guilty before a military commission.

Holder proposed last year trying Mohammed and four alleged accomplices in civilian courts in New York City. But that idea generated so much controversy that it's all but been abandoned.

He told CBS' "Face the Nation" that it's possible to impose the death penalty in a civilian setting for someone who pleads guilty. But he says there's far less legal certainty about that possibility in a military setting.
