Hamas committed a strategic mistake in letting the truce expire and again launching its missile attacks against Israel. Had Hamas waited until the Obama Administration had taken office, Israel might have felt more restrained in undertaking its targeted air strikes. No ally wants to initiate military actions in the first weeks of a new American administration when a new President is just getting his footings. This would be especially true with Barack Obama. He chose his national security and diplomatic team with the goal of keeping international relations stable while he focuses his attention on domestic affairs (primarily the economy). Israel would not want to complicate relations with the new Obama administration as it assumes power.

The Israelis waited until after Christmas -- always a good period to avoid violence. While there are very few Christians in Gaza (they are oppressed, some have been killed, some have tried to emigrate), many Christian leaders would object to violent operations during Christmas.

Ah, but wait, it gets even more annoying because not only did the AP snipe at Palin in its first birth announcement story, once called on it the AP went back twice to rearrange the piece rewriting history to make it seem as if they never sniped at her in the first place.

The market wasn't spooked by the Institute for Supply Management's report that its manufacturing activity index fell to the lowest level in 28 years in December. The Street's cool reaction extends a pattern that began to emerge after the market touched multiyear lows on Nov. 20.

Economic data have been terrible for months and investors have shown little surprise even as some readings fell well short of economists' already low expectations. During past recessions, the market has recovered ahead of the economy by growing numb to a stream of poor data and looking for signs that the downturn isn't worsening.

Obama will meet with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and then they will hold a second meeting with Republican leaders Rep. John Boehner and Sen. Mitch McConnell, the aide said on the condition of anonymity.

The discussions will be the first opportunity for the bipartisan leadership to meet with the president-elect and they will cover other issues besides the economy, the aide said. Obama transition officials declined to comment.

Osvaldo Aldrete Davila was shot in the buttocks while he was fleeing from an abandoned van loaded with 750 pounds of marijuana. Compean and Ramos believed Davila was armed -- a likely supposition given the all-out drug war being fought in much of Mexico and spilling over into the border states of California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas.

Google "Compean and Ramos" and you'll find thousands of pleas to pardon the two agents, who are serving more than 10 years each after being convicted two years ago in federal court in Texas of assault, civil rights violations and other charges. Davila later pleaded guilty to smuggling after another incident and was sentenced to 10 years in prison.

Under Minnesota law, election officials are required to make a duplicate ballot if the original is damaged during Election Night counting. Officials are supposed to mark these as "duplicate" and segregate the original ballots. But it appears some officials may have failed to mark ballots as duplicates, which are now being counted in addition to the originals. This helps explain why more than 25 precincts now have more ballots than voters who signed in to vote. By some estimates this double counting has yielded Mr. Franken an additional 80 to 100 votes.

IT now looks like half of President-elect Barack Obama's stimulus package will take the form of "tax cuts" for 95 percent of all Americans. Yet this wouldn't so much boost the economy as trigger a massive, unhealthy shift in American politics.

Under Obama's plan, the majority of American voters would pay no federal income taxes, but would get money from the government instead. That is, these "refundable tax credits" are basically welfare checks - and Obama's plan would leave the most of us collecting, not paying.

A $200 billion giveaway won't do much to get a $14 trillion economy rolling again. But the plan would leave any future taxpayer revolt no hope of majority support.

Correspondent John Quinones, the host of a series of ABC hidden camera specials designed to test how people react to ethical situations, appeared to preview a new edition that featured a cashier in a New Jersey deli yelling at a Hispanic customer.

The ABC crew had the pretend employee scream at a confused day laborer, saying things such as "We're building walls to keep you guys out of the country! You don't speak English, you don't get service! We don't serve your kind here!" Quinones then theatrically lectured, "...On this day, the only thing they [the customers] are being served is prejudice." He later observed that the experiment "uncovered some of the dark impulses many of us share."

The "What Would You Do?" host also used the segment to sympathetically report the plight of illegal Mexican day laborers and seemingly lump those who oppose illegal immigration with racists. Speaking of Mario, a person involved in the test, he explained, "You know, he's like 120,000 other day laborers who wakes [sic] up at 5:00 in the morning. Walks four miles to this little corner town."

A Jewish congregation in Helsingborg, in southern Sweden, also was attacked Monday night by someone who "broke a window and threw in something that was burning," said police spokesman Leif Nilsson. Neighbors alerted rescue services before the fire took hold.

Someone also started a blaze outside the premises last week. And on Sunday slogans including "murderers ... You broke the cease-fire" and "don't subject Palestine to ethnic cleansing" were daubed on Israel's embassy in Stockholm.

ISRAEL’S Operation Cast Lead is unfolding like a familiar soap opera on the nightly news.

A series of Palestinian terrorists making blood-curdling threats against Israelis, a hail of missiles aimed at Israeli civilian targets, retaliatory strikes against the terrorists - who unfailingly seek to shelter behind innocent civilians - followed by scenes of weeping parents at crowded hospitals.

It is a plot line designed to soften the hardest heart. Unfortunately, those who buy the tear-jerking material unquestioningly are being duped.

An officer came near me, as I stood watching with my youngest daughter. He told me to sit down with the girl "on your lap." So, we sat down, as the soldiers were doing. As another officer was explaining to the crowd about the types of explosives that would be fired, where they would be targeting (the hill a few kilometers in the distance), etc. I saw the soldiers stick their fingers in their ears................

The United States' intelligence community is undergoing the most extensive — perhaps even radical — transformations since the Office of Strategic Services gave way to the Central Intelligence Agency. Recognizing that people are the critical element in transformation initiatives is key to a successful transformation of the intelligence community and related homeland security organizations. The CIA is responsible for coordinating US counterintelligence activities abroad. Each of the military departments also has a counterintelligence element that operates domestically and overseas. The mission of intelligence agencies is to collect, analyze, and disseminate intelligence to their consumers. Human sources and technical collection systems can be developed only over long periods of time and often at great cost. They are easily compromised and, when compromised, often cannot be replaced. Accordingly, intelligence agencies are by nature reluctant to permit consumers, including law enforcement agencies, to use intelligence in any way that might result in the loss of a source or collection method.

These elements have offensive and defensive missions. Offensively, they attempt to recruit agents within foreign intelligence services to ascertain what, if any, operations are being undertaken against the United States; they monitor the activities of known or suspected agents of foreign intelligence services; and they undertake operations to ascertain the targets and modus operandi of foreign intelligence services.

It will involve money that this nation doesn't have to spend. It would be the biggest government spending bill in world history, charged to this nation's credit card for our children to pay without safeguards and appropriate hearings to scrutinize how the tax dollars are being spent. The money will either have to be borrowed or printed (unbacked paper) which could cause double-digit inflation in 6-to-18 months, as it is not possible to raise enough taxes from people or businesses in a down economy.

All this is happening at a time when we in the private sector are tightening our belts. One day the piper will have to be paid.

The Military Religious Freedom Foundation (MRFF) is co-plaintiff in the federal lawsuit that contends the military is openly promoting Christianity. Recently The Public Record reported that the suit was amended to include a complaint about a PowerPoint presentation called "Suicide Awareness for Soldiers 2008."

The MRFF, founded by Mikey Weinstein -- a graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy -- contends that the manual advises military chaplains to promote "religiosity" -- specifically Christianity -- as a way to deter soldiers from taking their own lives. Last year in an internal email, officials at the Veterans Administration confirmed that 6,552 veterans per year -- an average of 126 per week -- commit suicide.

Powell believes in pandering to minorities with an "outreach" that is based on expanding government entitlement programs and massively increased social spending. In the minds of liberals, this is the equivalent of job security. The more dependence on government largess they can foster, then the more government will need to be guided by"those who truly care."....

I spent Christmas w/ family in New Orleans...thank God their beautiful home & neighborhood was virtually intact during Katrina..but I also saw alot of areas still not rebuilt..& to me they looked like the poorer sections vs. the middle & upper middle class area where I celebrated the holiday.P.S.-We did have one family that lost their home in another area & had to live in a FEMA trailer. It seems N.O. is almost forgotten today by the feds & others.

So I won't repeat those details here. Suffice to say that current CO2 levels hover around 385 parts per million (ppm), a relatively minor constituent of earth's entire atmosphere -- less than 4/100ths of 1% of all gases present.

Authorities say Madoff has said he ran a $50 billion Ponzi scheme, paying investors with money raised from new clients.

He has been free on bail at his penthouse. But the government says he should be jailed for sending more than $1 million in jewelry and gifts to family and friends over the holidays.

The original version of the surgeon general position was created in 1870 to administer what was then known as the Marine Hospital System (MHS), which cared for sick and injured merchant seaman. The MHS, including a uniformed “Commission Corps” of physicians, was converted in 1902 into the Public Health and Marine Hospital Service, and its mission was expanded to medical inspection and quarantine of arriving immigrants, such as those landing at Ellis Island in New York.

In 1912, the Service was renamed the U.S. Public Health Service (PHS) as its mission was further expanded to conduct investigations into infectious diseases (such as tuberculosis, hookworm, malaria, and leprosy), sanitation, water supplies, and sewage disposal. Between 1930 and 1944, the Commission Corps officers were expanded to include engineers, dentists, research scientists, nurses, and other health care specialists.

A US Airways plane that had just departed from La Guardia Airport with 156 people aboard made an astonishing controlled crash landing into the freezing Hudson River after hitting a flock of geese that disabled two of the aircraft's engines, authorities said.

Miraculously, there appeared to be no deaths of the passengers or five crew members, who were rescued by ferry boats after the cool-headed former Air Force fighter pilot steered the Airbus A320 down to the Hudson. There were 78 injuries reported.

While federal authorities have not confirmed initial reports that the US Airways jet that crashed Thursday in New York’s Hudson River hit a flock of birds shortly after taking off from LaGuardia airport, Dr. Richard A. Dolbeer told msnbc.com that such bird-aircraft collisions are on the rise.

"The key thing is that we’ve seen a remarkable increase in populations of many or most large birds — birds such as great blue heron, osprey, bald eagle, snow goose, Canada goose,” said Dolbeer, a retired ornithologist with the Department of Agriculture at the Wildlife Services in Sandusky, Ohio. “These populations are increasing because we’ve done a really good job of wildlife conservation in North America for many species, because we’ve cleaned up the environment, gotten rid of DDT, enacted the the Clean Water Act. All good things, but because of these, we’ve had incredible surges of many species that are hazardous to aviation.

Ltd. of Beijing. One March 2008 email between the firms mentions shipping 215 ingots, with more planned.

The United Arab Emirates has informed the U.S. that in September it intercepted a Chinese shipment headed to Iran of specialized aluminum sheets that can be used to make ballistic missiles. A month earlier, UAE officials also intercepted an Iran-bound shipment of titanium sheets that can be used in long-range missiles, according to a recent letter to the U.S. Commerce Department from the UAE's Washington ambassador.

Hamas routinely fires indiscriminately into civilian areas, yet Israel is more widely condemned. Hamas intentionally mixes in with civilian populations, yet Israel is defamed for the unavoidable collateral damage incumbent in protecting its citizens. Israel refrains from totally leveling Gaza, at great personal cost, yet the nation is excoriated for disproportionality. This despite the fact that Hamas has shown no compunction about using the citizens they claim to be defending as homicide bombers. We all know exactly how our observer would react: with complete disbelief.

A federal "hate crimes" bill that officially is to enhance punishments for "violence motivated by bias that is a relic of slavery" but is feared by Christians as a potential bludgeon against basic biblical teachings has been returned to the congressional agenda by Democratic Rep. Sheila Jackson-Lee of Texas.

The proposal had been stymied during the Bush administration by the president's threat of a veto but President-elect Barack Obama's own website has promised an expansion of federal "hate crimes" laws.

The bill, the "David Ray Hate Crimes Prevention Act of 2009," has been pending in Congress in one form or another since at least 2007 but never was advanced into law because of stated opposition from President Bush, who found it unneeded and probably unconstitutional.

The Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court of Review - the appeals court for the secret Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court - said in an unclassified version of an August 2008 ruling that a now-expired law authorizing the interceptions was constitutional.

The ruling, which affirmed the secret court's initial finding, was a victory for President George W. Bush's administration which had faced criticism for saying it had the right to conduct warrantless wiretaps in certain circumstances for national security reasons.

On Monday's "Good Morning America," co-host Robin Roberts chose to tout only Democratic politicians in a piece honoring the civil rights movement and those "warriors" who made Barack Obama's election as president possible. Not a single Republican was mentioned or featured in the segment. Roberts began by announcing, "And on this Martin Luther King Jr. Day, we thought it would be appropriate to look back at all the warriors, black and white, who made this moment where we are today possible."

All the warriors? The piece went on to feature clips from eight Democratic politicians: Harry Truman, Hubert Humphrey, John F. Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson, Robert Kennedy, Barbara Jordan and Barack Obama, in addition to a number of non-political civil rights pioneers. Republican Abraham Lincoln went unmentioned, so did New York Governor Thomas Dewey who signed one of the nation's earliest civil rights laws in 1944 and President Ronald Reagan who made Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday a federal holiday in 1983.

The piece also ignored the inconvenient fact that a higher percentage of Congressional Republicans voted for the historic 1964 Civil Rights Act than did Democrats. Another point left unmentioned was the heroic effort by the conservative GOP minority leader in the Senate, Everett Dirksen, in supporting that legislation:

The world enters 2009 with Russia in play in a way it hasn't seen in decades. The relevant comparison isn't 1998, when the Russians engaged in default and devaluation but remained within the bounds of their existing political and economic system (as Lenin said, two steps forward, one step back). The history to consider is 1989--as key aspects of the Russian system could change for the worse.

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin certainly isn't a risk taker. The carefully managed "transition" to President Dmitry Medvedev and the extension of presidential terms to six years underscore that Putin prefers to leave as little as possible to chance. That's more ominously obvious in the recent tightening of laws on treason.

With oil prices well below what the Russians can afford, but Putin's (& Medvedev's) popularity still high, the initial moves have been to consolidate power. Yet despite no organized political opposition to speak of, we're still starting to see social unrest. For the first time in years, there have been widespread demonstrations in Russia--in 30 cities, following the imposition of import duties on used cars. We're likely to see much more turbulence in 2009, as factories providing employment for entire cities are shuttered. That's a sort of suffering that Russians are certainly used to, but only in the context of a very different kind of political system.

The poll asked 1,000 likely voters whether global warming was “caused primarily by human activity or by long term planetary trends.” Only 41 percent said it was human activity, while 44 percent said it was long-term planetary trends. Seven percent said it was “some other reason,” and nine percent said they were not sure.

This is a significant shift from a poll conducted last April in which 47 percent said human activity caused global warming and only 34 percent said long term planetary trends caused it.

Barack Obama, who campaigned on "Change We Can Believe In," was sworn in as the 44th president of the United States yesterday, Jan. 20, in the most expensive inauguration in the history of our country. Despite a bleak economy and a rising unemployment rate, Obama and we the taxpayers are estimated to have spent over $150 million. That is a lot of "change," to be sure.

While many in the country were welcoming the Obamas, the incoming president was busy putting out the welcome mat for the homosexual agenda. At the "We are One" gathering at the Lincoln Memorial on the Sunday before the Inauguration, Obama invited Bishop Gene Robinson, the first openly "gay" bishop ordained in the Episcopal Church, to give the opening prayer. It seems rather strange that an event to celebrate "unity" would begin with prayer by an individual whose homosexual conduct is responsible for one of the deepest divisions in the Episcopal Church in its history, as various dioceses have severed ties with the Episcopal Church to join the more conservative international Anglican community.

But even more shocking is the fact that Bishop Robinson was asked to pray at all. When questioned about the upcoming event by the Associated Press, Robinson assured them that he would "be careful not to be especially Christian in my prayer," and – not surprisingly – that he would not use a Bible. If that is the accepted view of our new president and those attending the event, then we are indeed in for a "change," but one actually contrary to our beliefs and very destructive of our national morality. Historically, there has never been a time when Christianity has been so openly shunned and homosexuality so expressly promoted.
