It took my body a year to get back to normal cycling. Then I got pregnant, but I wanted to, so it was ok. Tee hee. I guess some women go right back to cycles, I didn't. Hormonally and emotionally I was so much better than when I was on the pill, so it was an improvment. As far as spermicide is concerned, I have 'tried' that paper one, that dissolves. Well it got stuck to my finger, so that one is out. I also have a full box of those pre-loaded cream ones under the bed and I'm sorry, that just seems like a real mood breaker. I can deal with the condom mid-passion, but pulling out one of those things, nah. I dunno, can anyone tell me, can you 'apply' that stuff pre-passion and not have it leak? Sorry Kat, can't help you on the spermicide stuff, but yay that you can get off the bc!!

We've used the film (the one that Kathryn mentioned) for many years... as part of our FAM. It does take a while to figure it out -- the fingers have to be absolutely dry, and I have more luck using 2 fingers than with only one. There are some really nice benefits to it that other spermicides don't have (like a very long window of opportunity and it tends to stay put rather than dripping out). I've also tried other spermicides, but they seemed very inconvenient. When I went off of hormonal bc, it was after a miscarriage (due to the bc), so I don't have a lot of experience with the changes normally. I personally have been amazed at the change in my moods and general outlook, and I didn't think that the bc was affecting me much.

I've looked at the different types of spermicides and I believe the cream and the foam are the two types that work almost immediately, which I like. However, I think I'd also like to try to the film. Is it very hard to figure out where to place it?

The film is placed on your cervix -- which does change depending on several factors. Generally, it isn't really hard to figure out where to place it -- sometimes it is hard getting it there ;) .

I know where my cervix is and don't have a problem with touching it, but I couldn't get the darn thing to stay up there. It stuck to my fingers. So, Myka, you said two fingers completely dry? I can see it now, standing in the bathroom, naked, blow drying my fingers. Hmmm.

Kathryn, that mental image cracked me up. Oh my! If we were trying to prevent, I could see myself doing the same thing.

LOL...ah....the things we are willing to do in order to not have a "whoops." Do you think if I pray hard enough that God will just turn off my overies until Ray leaves so I don't have to worry about it? Seriously???? Not TTC is HARD!!!!!!!!!

You know, we tried for a year with Nadia and that was tough. We got pregnant on the second cycle with Rhys, so I feel that since we aren't trying, that's when it would happen (both times we just sort of 'whatever-ed' it before I got preg). And now we are NOT TTCing and I just shutter to think about doing this for 30 more years. To be honest, surgery is still in the back of my mind. Sharon, the only thing I can think is that if you stress out about it enough maybe your fertility will go down. They say that's a factor in ttcing, I know it was for us. So stress out!! Of course, then your hubby might not want to have sex, so it would work anyway!

We used them DIRECTLY as instructed, and I still got pregnant. When my dr. asked what we were using and I told her, she said, "So basically you were using nothing." I'm sure that different fertility levels def. come into play, but if having a baby is not the best option right now, I would try for something safer.

macokjc I think PitaKat is going to be using condoms anyway; the film, or whatever other spermicide, was going to be an extra. That's the impression I got anyway - I may be mistaken.

Yeah, we're going with condoms and also spermicide, for extra protection. I didn't get the film, I got some in foam form and some in pill form. I figured I'd try a couple different forms, to see what we like.

Let me know, I'm too chicken to try it. What I really want to know is does the gel leak? I mean, can I 'apply' it in the bathroom pre-passion and not have it leak all over the bed?

I've used gel in the pre-filled applicators as my half of the backup when I've been on antibiotics. It's effective for about an hour, and then it starts to break down, or dissolve, or whatever it does. I usually find it discharges starting about 2 hours after it's applied.

Thank you Moon, that's the sort of information I was looking for. I will be more apt to using them now.

ORIGINAL: sharonjef2007 Has anyone ever had any very light spotting around ovulation time? Yes, I have had light spotting around ovulation time. It scared me somewhat, so I did call the doctor. From my recollection, it can be normal from time to time. It is just the fluctuation of hormones.

Before pregnancy I could almost tell you the moment I ovulated. My body is just sooooooooooooo jacked up since giving birth and I somehow think it won't ever go back to normal. Being on nuvaring for 3 months after breastfeeding for 6 weeks didn't help things either I'm sure. I just can't trust my body right now and I will not temp and do all that charting and stuff. I even had a little tiny bit of spotting again yesterday with some cramping. My period is due around the weekend of the 7th. But who knows if that will be on time either.

Has anyone tried any of the IUDs available? What is the opinion on those? I asked my own doctor about it but she said she would never give it to me as I have never had any children yet and the target demographic for IUDs is women who have already had 1-2 children. I'm not sure how you can classify a "target demographic" for not wanting to be pregnant, but I had my concerns about the long-term health of being on an IUD anyway, so I let it slide. For now, I'm a huge fan of Nuva Ring. It's a little more pricey than the pill, but the peace of mind of knowing I haven't missed a dose or taken a pill too late is worth it to me. Pregnancy just isn't in the ideal plan for my DH & I at the moment, what with me working and starting grad school and commuting to both....we want kids someday, just not now. I'm really into adoption though, too, and want to adopt even more than I want to ever be pregnant. It never fails though...if I so much as smile at a baby or call one cute, the entire church and all my friends are counting down till I go preggo my eggo myself. *sigh*

From my understanding, IUD's don't work as well in women who have never had babies before. Something about a greater chance of it changing positions or even coming out. As for everyone else and their opinions on you and your husbands fertility and child bearing choices......well.......they don't get an opinion ;-) If someone says something again, just ask them if they are willing to provide free childcare services while you finish your degree. Should quiet them down a bit.

I discussed the IUD with my doctor about 5 years ago, and he said that while there is a slightly greater chance of expulsion if a woman has no children, the real reason some doctors will not implant IUD's in childless women is legal. There is a higher risk of infections with an IUD if you or your partner is not monogomous (the idea that a childless person is more likely to cheat just because they don't have kids is sad and insulting, but an opinion held by some) and there is a slight chance of injury that would impair fertility. Women who don't have a child and who lost their fertility make a better potential client for a malpractice suit than one who "at least has one". I considered an IUD because I was tired of toting my pills with me if I went out to dinner or worked late, and taking time zones into account when traveling was a pain. I also hated the fact that I had to use a backup if I got sick and had to take antibiotics. But, I didn't like the potential side effect of heavier flow, and DH was uncomfortable with the idea of a foreign object in my body, so I decided to stay with the pill for a while. I'm actually scheduled for a tubal in a few weeks, and I'm ready for it. I've crossed over 40, and with some of the cardiac and stroke issues in my family, I wanted to get off the pill. (This was a carefully considered and prayed over decision, so support welcome, but no commentary please.)
