Well, I made it four hours and then went outside to chat and before I knew it, I had another one.

Sounds like my life, I have no idea what makes the difference this time around.

You WILL succeed, because you WANT to be smoke-free. Just keep trying, you need ONE successful attempt.

It doesn't help that the computer is right off of the "smoking area" and I can smell and hear them outside. Tomorrow I am going to buy a window AC for this room, maybe it won't be so bad then.

We'll probably have to "rezone" the smoking area because I'm thinking that the window unit may wind up pulling the smoke into the house.

I now have a loose-leaf book full of ‘educational material’ on this subject; Things I’ve printed out, and hand written notes of things that I found that have ‘hit home’ for me. I also have http://becomeanex.org/; http://quitsmokingonline.com/; and, http://quitsmokingonline.com/ bookmarked for easy access if I find I need more research or to refer back to something. The most helpful to me, so far, has been the whyquit site. I just want to take the time to thank each and everyone who has posted a link to these sites; until you pointed the way, I was not aware that they even excised; THANK YOU!!

Keep this in mind: I said earlier that I have been smoking for 55 years; it has become a way of life/living for me; When I do quit there are things I need to do differently; like eat 3 meals a day, not just one; cut my caffeine in half and drink lots juice for the first days, I rarely ever drink juice; things like that.
Anyway, I have tried to quit many times over the years, but have been unsuccessful so far; therefore I am nothing more than a ‘want-a-be’ quitter, at this point in time, looking for the keys that unlock the doors to this prison and the cell that I’m held captive in.

The educational material has helped in showing me how I got here, and has helped to identify and break the bonds and shackles [of lies] that were holding me tightly; And some other areas are going to be very useful when I do quit. I found, for me, being educated on all these things has been extremely good! None-the-less, education does not have the power to stop me or anyone else from smoking --- it’s just information.

There are many who have quit without the aid or helpful tools that education does provide.
For example: My husband, who quit smoking over 35 years ago, never needed this education; one day he reached in his shirt pocket and pulled out and tossed ¾’s of a pack of cigarettes out the truck window and never looked back. He has been the most gracious, merciful and understanding ex-smoker towards all smokers that I’ve ever known. I have to say this: My attitude is, Unless I can be like him (that includes tolerating the smells of cigarette smoke and dirty ash trays and the person doing the smoking); like the example he has set forth --- which has been in all it’s ways Christ-like; I Do Not want to quit, because my hearts desire is to be to all smokers the same person I was towards them before I quit --- only a freer, healthier, and more joyous person.

so how many did you NOT smoke today because you waited longer or just didn't give in right then? Maybe that's wheere your focus should be right now instead of just on 100% quitting.

Well, I made it four hours ....

Question: Did you include the hours you slept?

For example, if your last cigarette before you went to bed was 12:01 A.M. and you got up at 8:01 A.M., but didn't have your first cigarette until 4 hours later, that would actually be 12 hours without smoking.

Just one, but if I would have stayed quit, it would have probably been like 4 by now.

well..., uhm....,
maybe you don't want to ask that question?

The answer is NOT that every day now is an intoxinating rapture of joy and serene peace of mind The truth, for me, is physically not that much. I'm partly in this now to see what positive sides will happen in the future.

One thing: It is NOT as hard as I thought (right here and now at least). The greatest difficulty for me is the persistent unease of a little craving all the time. But I do feel a little lighter, a little bouncier, I sleep a little better, and I am very much looking forward to (living in the hope that) the more dramatic changes.

IF, repeat IF, I can make it that far. Jimbos advice further back has been very valuable: Quit one minute, one, hour, one day at a time. Thus I've set short time manageable goals. Thus I don't think about how to survive the parties with friends, drinks and bbq's this summer, I think about getting through today and taking pride in managing and feeling that little bit calmer tonight. My next long-term goal is one more week. I'll be VERY HAPPY if I'm still smoke free by then.

Am I making any sense?

Pat: having smoked for 22 years and only stayed off the cigs for a week because of a whim in the moment, I do not feel I can give you any advice with any kind of authority.

BUT: A thought occurred to me: A serious attempt at quitting can be made at a time when you will not be exposed to other smokers/temptations/triggers? If you know in advance when that time comes (a vacation, a few days off, etc.), you could plan and prepare?

Just my thoughts

Maybe you can't give me advice with authority, but I can't think of anyone better qualified than a Christian brother or sister called to witness by sharing their thoughts with another.

The fact is this advice would work great for me in the area of anger and rage, I hate anyone seeing and hearing me like that; it doesn't look like anything resembling a Christian.
However, I want to be exposed to other smokers/temptations/triggers; I believe it can only make me stronger in not caving in, in a low moment of weakness in the future, when things don't go as one [I]would hope.
I have a hand written note (something I read):
"The addictive substance is what we turn to when we feel put down by an uncaring world. The root of addiction is that which is self-referential."
This is a picture of me, and I'm tired of turning to smoking to cover my hurts.

BUT hey..., Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

Today is Our Wedding Anniversary; we've been married 48 years.

I'm taking one hour at a time to see how far I can get in making this one day, this our special day, as smoke-free as I can (shhhh, it's a secret gift from me to him).

I quit one week before my wedding. It was one of the most stressful times of my life and I purposely did it because I knew if I could not smoke then, I wouldn't have to smoke any other time.
