So my nieces and nephews have started a small guild on a pvp server. I don't think it will get very far but who knows. Am I asking for trouble?

I hvae never played this game, nor do I know much about it. However, I have a friend who seems addicted to it. He plays the game about 3-4 times a week for several hours at a time. On weekends, he may literally spend all day playing it. His hygiene, health, and relatiionships seem to suffer slightly due to playing the game. I'm curious......what is the fascination with the game? Why is it so popular?

I play instead of watching t.v. I play to enjoy time with family and friends who live too far away to do something face to face. I enjoy challenging wits with other players. I dunno why some people live on the game. I guess it is a form of escapism. There is a combination of skill, luck and social connection that people find attractive. There is the ability to role play and be someone other than your mundane self. Some people just don't like their real selves. Some people use it as an excuse to be jerks, sadly enough. They say things and act out in ways they would never do face to face. But that is only SOME people. There are plenty of people who also play the game as a hobby in a well balanced life.

I play WoW because for 3 reasons: 1) I have to work away from home during the week and its a way to enjoy an activity with my wife and kids remotely, 2) it helps me decompress after working all day, and 3) its fun. Some people use video games as an escape, as car2ner has said. But people who look for an escape will find some way to escape, whether its a video game, drinking, gambling, hanging out in bars, sports, exercise, eating, sex, drugs, or any other human activity that can be taken to an extreme. An addictive personality can take nearly any activity and turn it into something harmful to themselves. I would suggest that if anyone already has issues with addictions to not play games such as these. One of their draws is the game world is so vast and filled with characters driven by real humans that interact with you in unpredictable ways - people feel that the anonymity of the game gives them carte blanche to do and say anything they desire with few if any consequences. That kind of altered reality can really capture an addict. But for the vast majority of those of us who play the game, its just fun to explore the big, open virtual world, read and take part in the game lore (i.e. the mythos of the game) through quests, and actually enjoy a social setting with real humans through guilds and groups. And we play this game while still having jobs, friends, families, and all sorts of other human endeavors. Like anything, a fractional minority can make the majority look like idiots. As an off-topic example, just look around at those "churches" picketing the funerals of US soldiers and ask the following questions: "Is that what all Christians are like? Who wants to play that game?" So let us not judge all gamers because we know someone who is an addict.

On a different note, I was on my night elf feral kitty and my hubby was a disc healer. I'm all of level 49 and foolishly decided to quest in Ungoro where critters are 53! Well, my sweetheart said that it was taking too long killing off the dinosaurs one by one. We went after the gorillas and I went bear and tanked (Oh MY Goshiness). I had between 5 to 8 of the hairy beasts on me and he had no trouble keeping me alive (granted he is level 53). He liked it and now he wants me to tank..............................argh! Time to start collecting tanky gear.

And also on another note... after a 3 week hiatus of not playing at all, I started back last night on my rogue. Got him to 68 so I could get into Northrend. I finished Vengeance Landing tonight, soloing that stupid apothecary escort mission where he tries to burn up their supplies and attracts no less than 3 mobs at a time. Only died once, and by the time I got back, that tough old bird was still swinging his torch and I managed to finish it. This is the highest level rogue I have ever had. I really like the subtlety tree. Lots of survivability there. My only problem is my gear is *less than adequate*. Its not even Outland gear. I got to 67 entirely in old world. I tried to get to 68 entirely in old world, had only 5 blocks to go for too long, grew impatient, so I achieved 68 in Hellfire Peninsula. So my entry into NR is a little rough right now. That's ok. I like the challenge.

Spotty could make you some gear. If you have altaholic you could see her skills and ship her some leather. But she'll be at Dragon Con this weekend so you may want to catch her after labor day.

Neuron: Most of the starter greens in Wrath will more than equip your rogue(lvl 80 before I quit) The idea for the starter wrath zones were to get people up to par, or at least part par, who didn't have lvl 70 full raid gear. Oh, and the tanking gear(cobalt set) ended up being better for my two tanks than the epics I had As for the time played. I had just over 3 years time in game clocked when I quit(multiple characters, multiple servers) However, WoW helped my grades immensely. It gave me something to focus on, when I wanted a break, I could go farm something, or run a quick instance, then go back and finish. It was social interaction, when I did not have the time, or ability to go out and have fun with others(insomnia kinda makes that hard, and most people I know are asleep at 4am) and for 15 bucks a month, I cut down on any other games I bought. Needless to say I was a bit out of the norm, but still. I met friends from across the globe, friends who I still stay in contact with, and who, whenever I am in town, insist on meeting up, and having a bite to eat.

Yeah, I am accumulating bits of leather as I move through the Fjord. Some of it is caster gear though, not all that great for a rogue, but its getting there. Actually, I don't mind it. I know a lot of folks have to have uber-gear on their toons because they are PVP'ers of dungeon crawlers. I am mostly a quester. So I don't mind having to try a little harder at the quests. And also, I have met friends in many other US states and a few in Australia that I still keep up with. Despite the anonymity afforded by these types of games, spend a few hours on vent with a group (for newbs vent is a means of voice over IP communication) and you really do get a feel for the their personalities and you can make find some like-minded friends that way. Its hard to keep up a false front when you are in a dungeon for several hours multiple times.

I will give a bit of encouragement then Neuron, Wrath(UNLIKE BC ugg) is VERY quest heavy, almost to an obscene point. I did the two starter zones, one after the other, and then moved to the next zones. I ended up with ALL of the 76+ zones left to do when I got to 80.(Talk about easy gold!) One can quest for levels in one area, without rested, and not have to worry about running out of quests, or having to move to a zone where there is nothing easy. That and, with the recent moves, daggers are more easy to come by(Maces are not rogue weapons! )

rofl. M'love and I play because we have fun. If we don't get the gear on a roll no biggy. Even though a nice ring dropped today and since M'love and I were both playing mages , he told me he passed....Uhuh.... he rolled Need just like the healer and I did. I won the ring BTW (insert happy dance here). We do like to get good pvp gear for battlegrounds, although with the lag issue that my sweetie has we won't be battle-grounding much for awhile.

That brings back memories....Lol. Between 5 running characters, and 5 raids a week, for about a year.... I never got my T4 bracers from Curator. Every time they dropped, I either lost the roll, or passed to someone who needed it more than I(Raid leader=pretty geared characters) I did finally win the roll for one...Mid way through Wrath, when we ran a lvl 80 Kara run, just for fun

I used to say "I'll never see the inside of Uldar or get t7 gear." Silly me.

My guild had a crazy run of MC with about 6 DPSers, and an off and on again tank and no healer. That was weird and crazy fun. I wish we had more of those BC and old world runs but we are all to busy with real life to get a group together lately. It just continues to remind me to enjoy the days we have cause they don't last. Change comes all the time.

Tuesday was crazy messy busy fun with masses of people running the quests. Allies on Cenarius where calling each other noobs. Horde on Earthen Ring just talking nonsense as they waited for the final fight. In my limited experience, the Horde behaved better than the Alliance.

Pre-ordered two copies of Cata. The deluxe sets are already sold out. In a way this is good. The deluxe sets are more expensive and I have a cheap (oops) frugal streak in me.

I hadn't been in Alterec Valley for awhile and we brought our 78's in to play. It was classic...the defend vs rush argument. I argued on the side of defense and took Snow Fall Graveyard! Yes, we took and held everything and made a turtle and some people actually had to pvp... poor babies. Some of us also thought it was great fun. It is nice now and then to take a break from running dungeons and attack something with a brain.

I really hadn't been playing it for about a month before that anyway...got bored with running heroics. Can't afford to pay for the game now anyway.

the mouse pad is the last thing I'd want. I use a trackball and a wacom tablet. I guess I'll just have to buy the music separately. BTW, is it true that the hunters are getting the "dead zone" again? O.o
