Father,

Thank you for all that you have been doing for Rick. Please help so that his liver will get better without meds. Of course, we desire a complete healing. Help the researchers and producers to come up with better liver meds that will have milder side-effects. We continue to pray for Rick in Jesus Christ's name that you will do what will be best for him. Amen.

Thanks for all of the prayers ongoing.

As someone w/ Hep C & Cirroshis I am headed today to Roosevelt Hospital In Manhattan for an ultrasound of my liver/gall bladder area to screen for cancer.

I have no signs but this is a yearly tradition.

I can no longer take the daily self injections of Pegasys as the meds work fine & my hep c plunges to undetectable usually w/ in the 1st month but then after a year & treatment ending it goes back up after a few months; there were also other complications.

I am seeing also Mt. Sinai Hospital's liver transplant team, one of the best in the country and have a low MELD of 13 so Praise God I don't even qualify to be on a transplant list...prayerfully it'll stay like that for along time but as w/ every patient one can progress slowly or very fast.

I pray that my liver w/ out meds will get better & that there will be no need for any liver transplant for a great many years.

I also pray that they will come up w/ better meds for all suffering from liver illness as there are only a couple of treatments & side-effects can be very harsh for some.

Unfortunately though in this bad economy my liver specialist says that they are not finding the research dollars that are needed.

God is a good God though...& he offers healing through His stripes.

Rick
Ps. 118:17

GOD BLESS

Heavenly Father, I lift Rick up to You for complete healing to You, our healer. Keep him strong in You, LORD, and may Your Will be done in his life and may he be blessed glorifying Your name. In the name of Jesus the Messiah I pray. Amen.

Thanks to prayn4u--- & all that post & I know some may not post...I have a crucial blood test Monday re: the excess iron around my heart & liver...that has been going down, will update this thread tomorrow. Thanks so much.
Want to bring NYC closure on my treatments before I move to Pensacola, where my brother & sister-in-law are celebrating their 40th Anniversary this weekend, and plan to move down there before Thanksgiving.God bless.

^^^I too am praying for a cure & better meds for all affected-not just me, as you can count the meds available on 1 hand, & they can have cruel side-effects...that I thank God I usually escaped.

Also, I participated in research for hiv & the liver (non-medicine studies-as I don't want to be a guinea pig in that way)...& during my last visit I told my liver specialist I'd be available again if he had any short-terms-he informed me that due to the economy alot of research funding has dried up.

I'm off to Roosevelt Hospital this afternoon to have my bi-weekly blood draw for excess iron around my liver & heart that has been quickly dropping(@ the top the ferratin was @ 5000-it was last time around 100+/Praise God---we need it to be -50, what we're shooting for now) & Iwill know on Thursday if I can halt the bi-weekly blood draws...will update this post later.

GOD BLESS ALL FOR PRAYING--Prayer changes things!

Am off today for a 2:30 (routine) appt. w/ my Hematologist @ Roosevelt Hospital in Manhattan. We have been drawing blood at the start every week then lately to bi-weekly as the ferritin dropped/the iron function that they're following - Praise God- it dropped from over 5000 to last check a little over 100/has to be -50 to stop.

Labs were taken again Mon. & we'll look @ those today & decide if I'll stop the blood draws & only have to go every few months for maintenance....appreciate the prayers...& hope to close out several issues before I move to Pensacola....

Rick/Ps. 118:17

quote:

Hemochromatosis:

What is hemochromatosis?

Hemochromatosis is an inherited disorder that causes the body to absorb and store too much iron, and is also the most common form of iron overload disease. The extra iron begins to build up in organs, causing damage and without treatment can lead to organ failure. Iron is an important nutrient found in many foods that humans consume on a daily basis, such as red meat and iron-fortified breads and cereals. Inside the body, iron becomes part of hemoglobin, a molecule in the blood that transports oxygen from the lungs to body tissues. Healthy persons typically absorb about ten percent of the iron they consume. Persons with hemochromatosis absorb more than their body needs to function properly and the body has no real way of getting rid of excess amounts of iron. This excess iron is stored in body tissue, particularly within the liver, heart and pancreas.

What are the symptoms of hemochromatosis?

Common symptoms of hemochromatosis include:

1. joint pain
2. fatigue and lack of energy
3. abdominal pain
4. loss of sex drive
5. heart problems

If the disease is not detected early and treated, serious problems may occur. Some of these include:

1. arthritis
2. liver disease
3. damage to the pancreas (possibly causing diabetes)
4. heart abnormalities
5. damage tot the adrenal gland
6. impotence
7. early menopause
8. thyroid deficiency
9. abnormal pigmentation of the skin

Symptoms tend to occur in men who are between the ages of 30 and 50, and in women who are over the age of 50. Many people have no symptoms of hemochromatosis when they are diagnosed.

How is hemochromatosis treated?

Treatment of hemochromatosis is simple, inexpensive, and safe. A physician will first want to remove excess amounts of iron from the body. This process is known as a phlebotomy and involves drawing blood, using the same process that is used at a blood bank. A needle is inserted into the patients arm and approximately one pint of blood is removed. This process is repeated once or twice a week for several months to a year, depending on the patient’s reaction to the procedures. The goal of the phlebotomies is to remove a certain amount of the iron within the blood and to maintain those levels. Once iron levels return to normal, the patient may need to give a pint of blood every two to four months for life.

PRAISE THE LORD, HE IS OUR HEALER!

Thanks to all that have prayed for the situation w/ the excess iron.....PER MY HEMATOLOGIST I NO LONGER HAVE TO DO A BI-WEEKLY HOSPITAL BLOOD DRAW!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I now just have to have labs for iron, ferritin, etc. every few months & if the ferritin goes up I'll have to do maybe "a" blood draw...& then return to just monitoring.

This frees up my mind in one more area re: my moving to Pensacola before the holidays...my sister-in-law, now retired was a lab supervisor @ Sacred Heart an 8 min. travel from my brother's house, & a couple minutes more from where I might move.... & that's where I'll get my primary care for hiv & my liver. I'll be talking to someone down there in the next couple days.

And, if I ever need a liver transplant I'd likely get it at Tulane University Hospital in New Orleans where I have more relatives in the medical field (here in NYC I have no family).

Re: a liver transplant---- my MELD is low/Thank God , too low to even get on the list...& my liver specialist will do a new MELD in about a month.....

Will keep ya posted; GOD IS GOOD!

Rick/ Ps. 118:17

PRAISE GOD AGAIN!!!

As regular visitors know a few posts above I had a sucessful early conclusion to regular hospital blood draws to remove excess iron from around my heart & liver...I no longer have to go every week or 2 weeks...& have to be monitored every few months for a possible blood draw to remove any iron that "may" have built up..praying that it won't.

AND YESTERDAY I RECEIVED MORE GOOD NEWS:

As I have cirroshis (scaled at a 4 out 4-major scaling)...I have to have sonograms or MRIs once a year to rule out LIVER CANCER that can progress w/ the disease...I had 1 recently & my dr. reported yesterday no signs of cancer or changes from last year...PRAISE GOD!

I am now preparing my move to Pensacola, where I've never lived but have lots of family & am trying to wrap up things in NYC...i.e. have initiated contact w/ who may be my primary care providers in Fla. & should be ready to move by Thanksgiving.

GOD IS GOOD.

PS-I also attended a Tues. evening healing service where 7 pastors prayed over me per the scripture in James 5.

You can get a good sense of what's been going on w/ me by back posts; will be brief as I will see my dr. at 6:30 pm in Manhattan.

Praise God I had another MELD that shows w/ out benefit of medicines & shots for my liver-- it remains low; having gone from a 13 to a 10-measured twice.

My low meld doesn't even-thank God-put me in line for a future liver transplant (btw-there is a vast shortage of transplant donors-if Obama's healthcare plan's approved-100s of 1000s of more could be added to the lists-it's a great gift for Christians to give).

Today we'll go over my hiv (& general) labs--- & whether or not my viral load remains "undetectable".

We'll also go over another recently done MRI to screen for liver cancer (routine for those w/ stage 4 cirroshis).

I ask for your prayers for good labs, a good mri/no cancer & positive results of a recent routine bone density.

If things are all ok; I may move to Pensacola by the latest around mid-Jan. 2010.

Rick/Ps. 118:17
