Since the Top 5 most powerful tenors thread seems to have died out, I thought I would start one about the "highest" tenor singers in Southern Gospel. My top 2 would have to be Brian Free and Jerry Martin. Those guys can sing high all day long without breaking a sweat and without even trying. Also, I have been listening to some of the Greene's older albums, back when Tim was still singing. I know he sang the "alto part" in a mixed trio, but that man could hit some high notes. Of course he had to, since Taranda was the soprano. :-) Anyway, let me know what you think. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of the names from the other tenor thread show up on here. Oh well.

Well...one night in Fort Worth years ago at Will Rogers the Kingsmen and Gold City were in concert. Johnny Parrack drove down to see Jay. They did Kings Gold "Looking for a City". Jay and Jerry Martin both cracked trying to go up as hight as Johnny.

I was at that concert in Ft Worth, that was great. I remember Tim Riley saying we found a fellow that dosn't mind singing high, and about that time Johnny came out, and it was on.

Johnny was unreal. He is one of my all time favorite tenors.

Here's one with Johnny Cook singing "Here They Come"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0_kMPVeuOOM

Don tells a cute story about a 5-pound bag of flour Johnny's grandma used to teach him to sing.

Let's don't forget Greg Bentley. Formerly with Squire Parsons. He was quite good I think.

If you haven't heard Jerry Martin lately, you need to. He is better then ever.

I would love to see Brian Free and Jerry Martin go head to head on something other than "Looking For A City."

Throw Billy Hodges into the mix, too. That would be a pretty good competition.

And I'm not talking about sounding pretty, either. The title of this thread is "highest tenor," so sure, I would be interested in hearing who could hit the highest note even if it came out sounding like a fire engine siren.

Robert,
That's great, but you must have had a sorry math teacher!

(Sorry, couldn't resist!)

In all honesty, I don't care for the really high tenors so much. I much prefer a voice like John Rulapaugh's.

That is the thing about Jerry Martin's voice. He can hit some of the highest notes I have ever heard but it is so clear and clean. But I also really like John Rulapaugh.

Maybe you all aren't considering David Phelps as a Southern Gospel singer. He has reached the highest notes and held them the longest. His voice is clear and without strain or going into falsetto. He doesn't turn red in the face or have veins popping out his neck. (And he sure doesn't hurt your ears like Parrack does on I'll Fly Away. He's a sweet guy, but I have to turn my radio off when that song comes on because it hurts.)

Its been a long time since I have heard mention of Curtis Elkins. He was great singing with Bob Wills and the Inspirationals. They were a great quartet. To bad they disbanded and Bob Wills started a family group. the family group was good, but I really enjoyed the quartet. Curtis Elkins could really nail the high notes. I have four or five LP's with the group and him singing the "ladies part." Good, solid tenor!! Anyone know what he is doing now?

The Cathedrals featuring Ernie Haase singing "I Want To See Jesus." It doesn't get any better.
