(Ray loads up the wood-burning stove and breaks out the lawn chairs. The garage warms up nicely and he warms his hands over the stove. He starts a pot of coffee...puts up a sign that says 'No girls allowed!')

There's munchies and a cooler, so feel free to come on in and sit a spell. What's on your mind?

Not much on my mind today, Ray. But thanks for stoking the fire and the coffee. Rang in the New Year with my wife, my youngest daughter and a neighbor and her daughter. Spoke to my sister last night too. She informed me that my grandfather now has a hospice worker as he's lost his will to live. I know things are tough for him. Grandma passed away two years ago and I know he wanted to go in his field and die among his cows. But, it wasn't his time to go. The family moved him to another state to be near two of the kids. He's living in a nursing home and having to be tended to all the time. It has to be hard after years of indepence.

Anyway, what's on your mind, Ray?

Hiya Ray! Nice place you got here! There's absolutely nothing on my mind (as usual) but can I sit here for a spell anyway?

I'm anticipating '08 will result in a lot of changes for me... My daughter is getting married and they plan to move to Wisconsin this summer. Wifey is already starting to feel seperation anxiety. Me too but not as much.

Me and my wife plan to move too but I still got my younger two in college and that is a complicating factor. We're in Phoenix now.

I think a couple of you are notherners... Is the climate really that bad up there? My daughter is lobbying for us to move up there too and I do find the idea appealing but the winters concern me.

Hi Zamdad

Sorry to hear that your grandfather. One of mine passed away about six years before I was born. The other one when I was about 22.

My wife's grandparents on her mother's side both died within six months of each other. It seems to be fairly common for the remaining one to feel no reason to live. Frankly, I can't blame them.

Honestly...losing weight. Sure, it's that time of year that a lot of people see the need to lose weight as a New Year's resolution. For me, it's just the excuse that I need to start. My goal is to lose 147 at two pounds per week. That would put me in my ideal weight range...where I was 22 years ago when I quit smoking. It has become a life-or-death situation, and I need to take it seriously...for a change.

Help yerself to the coffee. Might be kinda thick.

With the new grand-baby, I had a great 2007.

I see you're into Civil War reenacting. Are you a member of the SCA?

Thanks Ray. I feel blessed. I'm 44 and all of my biological grandparents are still alive. Grandpa has left a strong legacy. I understand his deire to leave us. On the other side of my family my grandparents just celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. They're 92 and 90 and still going strong. I find myself now wishing I lived closer to them so I could spend time with them before they get called home.

Mrtigger, these northern climates are not as bad as their made out to be. I grew up in sunny southern CA and spent the first 18 years of my adult life in the middle of Alaska. The past nine years we've been in Minnesota. I've grown to love winter. When you thinking about making the move?

After six years in the navy and moving back home for about a year, we ended up living about 850 miles away. We live in Michigan, grew up in Nebraska. When my brother was alive, he lived in the DC area. My sister lives in Mississippi. Her parents and family are still back home. Mine have sold out many years ago and travel. For years they spent their summers in Wyoming and wintered in Arizona. Now they aren't going to Wyoming anymore, but still in Arizona and have built near my sister in Mississippi. I know how you feel about being far away.

Congrats and my condolences on the wedding. Having married off two daughters...just try to stay sane through it all.

As far as the weather, it depends on how well you do in cold temeratures. Here, the average high in January is 32F. Other places are colder. Some will point out that we have all four seasons here, and enjoy each and every one of them. My wife hates the cold.

LOL! I can believe that!

It's about 9 degrees outside right now here in the mountains of NC. This is a bit cooler than normal for us. We hardly get snow anymore.

Say, this coffee is strong! I can get used to this. I put a large jar of Spicy V-8 in the cooler. Y'all help yourself.

New Year's resolutions? Naw, but if I lost about 30 pounds, that would be a good thing.

Hey there Denbert!

Thanks for bringing the Spicy V-8. Hadn't had that stuff since high school...20... fiv-er... ish... something years ago. Can't believe they still make it. I need to get out to the grocery store more often.

Hi Ray! You don't know me but I've been here-and-there on CW for about five years now. (Love the beard, btw). I must admit, at first I thought it was a little risky sitting around a wood burning stove in someone's garage, but then I remembered the wood burner I found in my rickety old barn when we bought this place over 12 years ago. I don't even want to know what kind of a person would put a wood burning stove in the middle of a BARN!

Good to hear from you again, Zamdad. I hope the Lord is merciful to your family.

Well, thanks for the chat guys. I'm going to the stable and feed my horses. If I don't talk to you for a day or so it's because I'm moving my fire ring (an old steel rim) from the back yard to the aisle in the stable... stop by if you get the chance.

New Years resolutions? I resolved never to make new years resolutions again years ago. This year, I am focusing on finding a new full time job.

Such prevarication on CARM!!! I'm in Dallas and as far north and as cold as I ever want to be!

I grew up in Kansas (until 13) and California until I joined the Air Force. I saw all the snow I wanted to see in KS and could go to the mountains in the mornings to play in the snow (only if I wanted) in CA and then go to the beach in the afternoon.

Ray, what's on my mind is that I'm in open workspace here in Houston and I have "FARTITIS" today (so I'd like to "literally" be in your garage). And unfortunately girls are allowed here, and it ain't too comfortable in these circumstances. I'm sure I'd be welcome in your garage if I go outside every once in awhile.

Never been a member myself, but have had friends that were. I see they're not really Civil War era, but might be of interest.

Another one that I've heard is that we have two seasons...winter and road repair.

Good to meet you!

That sounds like a lot of work. Let me know if you need the services of a bulldozer.
