Here is a link to the news story. Mississippi Prom A student wanted to go to prom with her girlfriend and wear a tux. Now the school canceled the prom? First off, that is totally lame that the school would punish everyone at that school for one persons choice. If anything, if the school really had an issue with this student, punish her, not the school.I know the bible says that being gay is a sin, but come on....isn't that that students cross to bear, and not the schools or the other students? Why should they be punished? Whats your opinion?

For now it's a reasonable standard to enforce and if the school was going to be sued by the ACLU, then canceling the event is certainly one way to attempt to avoid the suit. Seems like the school officials saw it as a no-win and picked cancellation as the least disruptive thing to do. While not cited as a reason, I wonder what the legal costs for disagreeing with the ACLU might add up to?

If it was a public high school(and it appears it was) they really should have just let the girls go. Had it been a private religious school they might have had a leg to stand on in refusing to allow the lesbian couple to attend a school function on 'religious' grounds.

The young lady and the ACLU may be right in their allegation the school has violated her free speech rights.
