I heard a sermon the other day on T.V. about a guy who was struggling to give his life to the Lord because he would have to give up his life of immorality. And, then he got deathly sick and couldn't give his life to the Lord on this death bed because he said that something died within him the day (at the church) he rejected the Holy Spirit and chose his immoral life. I've heard that the Holy Spirit will "knock" so many times and if you keep rejecting him then he will leave. I was wondering if there is scripture that backs this up? Thanks!

ORIGINAL: 4ChristisLove I heard a sermon the other day on T.V. about a guy who was struggling to give his life to the Lord because he would have to give up his life of immorality. Thanks! I think this story is someones misconception about the Holy Spirit. The guy's problem is that he never accepted Christ because his heart was never in it. He loves his sins more than his spiritual well being and this leads to death. He was moved emotionally at church to accept Christ but he refused because of his sin nature. The opportunity is still there regardless of any emotion. If he had accepted Christ he would have been born again and the Holy Spirit would have then indwelled him as a believer. There is scripture in Hebrews that talks about falling away but this is about saved Jews wanting to return to the sacrificial system. This guy is not even saved so how can he worry about the Holy Spirit when he hasn't even repented of his sins and turned to Christ. In my opinion the story has no merit. Anyone can be saved at any time no matter what but if their heart is hardened they just won't turn. I would never recommend that anyone wait until their death bed because the day of salvation is right now. What's he waiting for? Proof that he is a sinner bound for hell. Don't play a game of chance with death because the odds are not good you will make it to heaven by waiting for the last breath to accept Christ. Some people mistakenly think that their sin is their happiness and they don't want to give it up. For the wicked boasteth of his heart’s desire, and blesseth the covetous, whom the LORD abhorreth [Ps. 10:1–3]. Now if this guy would look away from sin toward God he would see this: Look upon mine affliction and my pain; and forgive all my sins [Ps. 25:18].

I have always understood that the only unforgiveable sin is blasphemy, also described as the rejectoin of the Holy Spirit. We cannot come to salvation without Him. I cannot find the scripture that refers to this (NT) but I'll try to find it. But I've been taught on many ocassions that the Holy Spirit will knock only so much before he closes that door. If one continually rejects the Holy Spirit it is my understanding through scripture that he will leave and not return. A former pastor related a story similar as described in the OP. A young man rejecting the Holy Spirit at an invitation. The young man later described the urging of the spirit and when we refused a coldness of spirit that never returned. Not many years later this same young man was dying of cancer. The family brought in the pastor to minister to him. They talked to salvation but the young man said that we wanted to but couldn't. The spirit was not with him in a sense. He described that coldness and emptiness. He described being scared he has rejected the HS once too often. He didn't want to give up his favorite sin. It wasn't too much after that the young man died. The pastor related how he was convinced that his rejection of the Holy Spirit and inability to come to salvation lead him to hell. edited: FOUND IT Matt. 12: 30 - 37 - focus on verse 32. Anyone who speaks against the holy spirit will not be forgiven either in this age or the age to come. Refers to blasphemy Mark 3:29 - But whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven; he is guilty of an eternal sin. Luke 12: 10 - similar to Matt 12 in wording
