I made it smoke-free for 19 hours and 20 minutes today, YAY!!!! So how many cigarettes is that that you did NOT smoke today? That would have been about 17; because I smoke about 20 (a pack) a day and I only smoked 3-1/2 total before going to bed last night. I've been up 1-1/2 hours this morning and haven't had any yet ; but no promises. Oh, I've got to share this with you: I didn't tell anyone, except you all here yesterday, that I was going to try my best and not smoke --- as a secrete gift to Denny. However, our 40 year old daughter; who lives with us with her almost 19 month old daughter; who also smokes, had noticed but didn't say anything. After I light my first cigarette, she asked me if it was my first one of the day; Dh and I had gone out to dinner, so she wasn't sure; when I said it was she said that she had purposely not smoked in front of me all day out of consideration. I thanked her and then told her that wasn't necessary and she said, "I know but I wanted to be considerate." P.S. In being considerate towards me, all on her own, she smoked 1/3 less yesterday --- unintentionally

FWIW: When I began my journey, I tossed out all remaining tobacco in my house, car, and work. In order to have caved, I would have needed to make a deliberate trip to the store where I used to buy my drug of choice. I even avoided the tobacco checkout lane at our local Super Walmart for the first few months. That way, if I had a craving after a meal or at 2AM in the morning, I had to deal with it some way other than caving in. Romans 13:14 says, "But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh in regard to its lusts." (NASB) I believe that we live up to that principle by ridding our home, etc. of tobacco so that we have only one option when the urge strikes: resist and climb another rung on the ladder out of our pit of addiction! Day 637 nicotine-Free, Day 734 tobacco-Free

(NASB) This is the scripture I've been getting the last week, whenever I think of this whole subject: Ephesians 6:12-18, "For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints." [New International Version] quote:

Beings I'm not the only one who smokes in this house; Tammy does too; I don't see this as a help for me --- none-the-less a great way to start, for those able to follow this example!! However, since there were only '3-1/2' of "my drug of choice" left from the night before, and I smoked them last night, that leaves me '0' without my going to the store. Yes, I can smoke one of Tammy's if need be --- but although we smoke the same brand now days she smokes Menthol --- I don't. Plus I'm a procrastinator, especially when it comes to driving --- I only drive when I run out of choices. So........, that's where I am this morning.

I was blessed in that respect. In the past two years none of my coworkers smoke and the restaurants & businesses where I go all have no-smoking policies. Once in a while, I'm mildly exposed to cigarette smoke in parking lots, that's about all. Sadly, my relatives that smoked have died of lung cancer or smoke-related illnesses.

Until I quit, I did not realize that smoke stinks so much and that, even with mints, cologne or other attempts at hiding it, non-smokers can smell it from the hair, sinuses, and clothes.

I have noticed my sense of smell is improving. Not necessarily pleasant all the time! Anyway: A week and two days, 180 cigarettes not smoked, 125 US$ saved. Today was borderline tolerable in its cravings. Somebody must be praying

I'm not out of the woods yet! One moment of unresolve and "what's-the-point"-thinking, and it's square one again

Walking - speed walking - is my favorite way to exercise. Yesterday, I decided to try a different 3.5 mile outdoor track at one of our city parks. A lot of it was in the woods and very little of it was close to being flat. At places I had to watch for cyclists and runners. Once, I misjudged the trail and took a wrong path that added another quarter mile to my walk. All in all, it was a good workout. It was a little bit like a quit. Once I started, I was committed to finish and determined to deal with each hill, turn, and unexpected turn. I never once considered turning back or taking a shortcut back to my car.

Great job Jordan. I didn't smoke 10 cigarettes today, but there were 10 that I did smoke.

What you do now is change your mindset. You are not denying yourself the pleasure of a cigarette. You are giving your body the gift of health. Go for a walk, play a video game, take a hot bath, read a book (or your bible). You can do this.

For the next week or so, worry less about new habits than coping as your body reprograms itself to life without addiction to nicotine. This is a partial list of things that might help: Put a rubber band around your wrist - snap it whenever a crave hits, repeatedly if needed until it passes. Limit caffeine to HALF your usual amount (nicotine reduced its effects) - caffeine can make you think you're having an intense craving when it's just its effects doubled. (You can resume caffeine intake over time.) Eat regularly - skipping meals like we used to will result in low blood sugar which will also make you think you're having an intense craving when all you need is food (low carb will minimize weight gain and give you a steady, longer period energy). Munch sunflower seeds, peanuts, beef jerky, sugar free gum (Xylitol like found in Trident gums can actually reduce & REPAIR minor cavities), Altoids mints & gum, toothpicks, coffee stir sticks, or even one third to half a cotton ball (rinse your mouth with Listerine after putting the cotton ball in your mouth for extra strong craves). Hopefully, these might give you a few ideas for coping. As mentioned, going for long walks or working out can also be a great stress reducer - as well as minimizing weight gain. Don't work too much about weight gain for a while. Your first priority now is to establish a solid record of successes in your journey toward FREEDOM! Day 638 nicotine-Free, Day 735 tobacco-Free

ORIGINAL: Pat-rebel_lady Still smoke-free so far today --- no promises. Pat, I begin each day with a commitment to myself and to God to be tobacco-free for just today. I commit to doing and enduring whatever it takes to accomplish that. Food for thought: During the past two years, I have never awaken any morning and wished that I had caved the day before - no regrets for keeping that daily commitment 735 days now.
