I can't seem to find it in the control panel. I am trying to disable it.

Someone here can walk you through it if you tell us the laptop brand. But if might be easier to look for an enable/disable function on the keyboard. Toshiba is <Fn><F9>. IBM Thinkpads (recent ones) are <Fn><F8>. Look for the secondary colors on your function keys. Look for a little trackpad icon on one of them.

My touch pad has an option to disable it whenever there is a mouse connected--I like that, b/c without a mouse, I obviously want to use it.

As far as your question goes, in Control Panel, I have to click on Mouse. But one of the tabs in the new window does in fact say "touch pad." However, the option to disable touchpad when mouse is plugged in is in my "devices" tab, so if you can't find yours in one tab, keep looking.

I'll keep looking. I googled this question and came up with massive discussions and elaborate instructions to type in. I am not very technically minded. My children are more clever with these things, when I see my son next I must ask him for help.

Mine is an ASUS a3hf. There is no option for touchpad in the mouse tab

They should all have this! I opened control pad and opened mouse but it only has the properties which has tabs for hardware and pointers and wheel;nothing in the hardware for touchpad. It is annoying because I write a lot and the touchpad gets in the way.

What tabs are in the Mouse Properties window? Do you have a Device Settings tab?

One other thing--you do have the driver installed for the touchpad, don't you? It might not show up in the Ctrl Panel if you don't have it. MWD might set me straight on that one though.

Take a quick peek at My Computer, Right-click, Properties>Hardware tab, click on Device Manager. Do you see any yellow question marks? That usually means a driver has not been installed. If so, is it possible that one of the devices with the yellow mark is the touchpad?

Just a thought.

I have device manager opened. I clicked on mouse and other pointing devices. It has HID compliant mouse and microsoft PS/2 mouse. Is it one of those. When i click on it it has an option to disable but I don't know which one it is.
