I went to Walmart today and as I was checking out I noticed an end cap / display of CDs. They are basically a group of CDs with eco friendly packaging. They kinda look like those album sleeve packaged CDs (similar thinness but not quite as nice and the CD snaps in and does not have an inner sleeve). Among all the greatest hits stuff (and some good ones for that sort of thing) I found Van Morrison's 1970 classic album "Moondance". Not a best of or a live one but a classic studio album. I'm surprised to find Van Morrison at Walmart at all, never mind something other than a best of (or those cheap priced extended versions live CDs). So all you Van Morrison fans, tell me why I done good. I've never heard Van Morrison beyond "Brown Eyed Girl". And no, I didn't see "Astral Werks" or any of his other stuff so a choice of which Van Morrison CD was not an option.

Rufas: Needless to say, you did really well. If all you know of Mr. Morrison is Brown Eyed Girl (uhg! - can you say "overplayed"?), then you're really in for a treat. Moondance is an excellent place to start if you're just beginning with Van. It's much (in my opinion, anyway) more accessable than Astral Weeks, and still holds up amazingly well after almost 40 (!) years. The first five songs (side one on vinyl) make up one of the finest sequences of tunes ever (again, just my opinion). Enjoy! And let us know what you think.

I'll second that..."Moondance" is an excellent place to start! And yes, there is sooo much more to Van Morrison than those few overplayed hits ("Brown Eyed Girl", "Domino" etc.). The whole album is good, but my personal favorites include "And It Stoned Me", "These Dreams Of You", "Into The Mystic" and "Brand New Day"....heck, it's all good. My personal recommendations (based on the albums I've heard or own): Early 1970's: Moondance Tupelo Honey It's Too Late To Stop Now (live) Veedon Fleece Late 1970's: Wavelength Into The Music Early 1980's: Beautiful Vision A Sense Of Wonder Late 1980's (my favorite Van period): No Guru, No Method, No Teacher Poetic Champions Compose Avalon Sunset Early 1990's: Enlightenment Hymns To the Silence Late 1990's: Back On Top Early 2000's: Down The Road He's one of my favorite artists of all time. This is a good year for you to start getting into Van The Man, as most of his catalogue is being remastered. Hope you enjoy the album. Blessings to you and yours!

MOONDANCE! YES! This has been my fav Van Morrison cut since I found the song in my early 20's Late teens. The actual song Moondance, and that bass line... Ba doom doom doom doom, doom doom doom doom, badoom doom doom doom DOOM doom doom doom. "Well it's a marvelous night for a mooondance with the stars up above in your eyes... A fantabulous night to make romance 'neath the cover of October skies..." The whole cd is a piece of art. "Moondance" (song) being the best on the CD but then it is too difficult to pick an order. Actually, funny story. My wife, who is from Mexico, she does speaka da english pretty well now but she had never heard Van Morrison before we met so I turned her on to the song "Moondance" and from there, I lost my CD, not literally, but she stole it, I ended up having to by a 2nd copy of the CD on her birthday just for her....

Thanks for the replies, I knew we had some Van Morrison afficienados on the frorums. That's how I knew "Moondance" was considered a classic in the first place. BTW: I've heard "Domino" also. By the way, the CD slids into the case just like a record but has no inner sleeve. The liner notes slide into the other "fold" in the case. Liner notes include lyrics and credits. Keep in mind this wasn't an obscure clearance item I happened to find. Its part of a promotion they are doing, again mostly greatest hits. I'll let everyone know what I thought after I listen to it.

Amazon had Astral Weeks for $1.99 a few months ago. I have enjoyed it but it is one I can't listen to too often.

Is the packaging slightly bigger and more square than a regular cd jewelcase? If so I've seen those a couple time in new metal releases (the latest Wolves in the Throne Room and Xathur's "A Gate Through Bloodstained Mirrors" reissue). I didn't know they were trying to be eco-friendly, I thought they were just trying to be 'more record sleeve like' digipacks. heh.

I didn't know they were trying to be eco-friendly, I thought they were just trying to be 'more record sleeve like' digipacks. heh. Yes they are. However, my "record sleeve like" CDs (like Iron Miaiden's "Somewhere in Time") are ever so slightly taller and squarer than this one. I suspect the CDs you mentioned are trying to replicate record sleeves as you say and aren't really intended or promoted to be eco friendly. Interesting story: a friend of mine bought Black sabbath's "Paranoid", which was part of the same series of eco friendly Walmart CDs. He went to sell it to a used store whose owner happened to have a record sleeve replica import of "Paranoid". The owner wouldn't buy it from him because he thought it was the replica CD package with the older issue CD. In other words the package didn't match the contents. This demonstrates how similar this packaging is to record sleeve replicas. BTW: listened to it once but I was sleepy so I want to listen to it again before I offer an opinion on it.

Listened to it again. I see why its a classic. Nice blend of several types of music, folk, rock and jazz among them. I like how all the different styles make a cohesive whole. The listener isn't caught saying "here comes the jazz part now". I do like a bit more drama in my music. I suppose that's why I gravitate toward metal. But its an excellent CD to relax to. Favorites include "Moondance" (love the jazzy bass line, reminds me of "Kind of Blue"), "Caravan" and "Brand New Day" (the gospel choir is used to great effect and doesn't feel at all gimmicky). Thanks for the replies.

On the Van re-issue front....I was pleased to pick up newly remastered editions of "Into The Music", "Common One", and "Inarticulate Speech Of The Heart". For some reason, these particular titles were only released in the UK. Fortunately, the record store I went to carried imports, and lo and behold, I found all three at a reasonable price. I'm now saving my nickels for September, when the next wave of Van re-issues comes out. If you can lay hands on a copy of "Into The Music" (the older, non-import edition is still readily available) you might like it. I think it's one of his best. Van Fan Lemon
